14 THE EVENING STAR, MONDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1896-16 PAGES. IN MUSICAL CIRCLES| The Y. M.C. A. Orchestra to Be Enlarged This Winter. Choral Society Getting Ready for the “Mensiah”—Maad Fewell's Rare Old Violin—Other Matters. The Chorai Soctety is now busily rehears- ing for its performances of the “Messiah,” which will take place in the Congregational Church on the 2¥th and 30th instants. The subseriptions of contr.buting members are ‘oming in rapidly, and there is every i cation of a prosperous season. The princi- pal soioist will be Mr. Ericsson Bushnell of New York, who will sing the bass part, and his rich, full voice is well known to the musical community of this city. He will be heard with a great deal of pleasure. The only other out-of-tow: soloist is Miss So- pia Church Hall, contralto, of Baltimore, who comes here @ stranger, but who ts said to be a singer of excellent voice and good cultivation. The others of the quartet will be Mrs. Neliie Wilson Shir-Cliff, soprano, ard Mr. W. D. McFarland, tenor, both of whom are well known as local singers of high reputation. The chorus will be in good trim for the performances, for Professor Kaspar, the musical director of the socicty, is putting the members through some good rehearsal Prof. Will Haley. the conductor of the Washingtor Military Concert Band, is working now upon the program for the sec- ond concert, which will take place January 17. Ail the numbers have not yet been de- termined upon, but they will be such as to show the bard to good advantage, and will «ratify every shade of musical taste. The many friends of Mr. Henry Xander have been congratulating him upon his successful debut as a conductor at the rbund concert, at the Columbia er, December 6 He handled both estra and singers in a masterly man- d besides acted as accompanist to joists with his usuai efficiency. Miss Maud Powell, who comes te this city tomorrow night as one of the aitractions at the first Metropolitan concert, is the possessor of a genuine Amati violin with a Fedigree.
