SPANISH ASSERTIONS REITERATED a Announcement Sent to Minister De Lome. MAJOR. CIRUJEDA’S STORY ——____-_ 4 A special from Key West, Fla. sent last night says: The Cuban leaders here and at Tampa deny the reports from the Spanish office at Havana of the dea of Gen. Macco and the son of Gen. Gomez. Al- though reports from Havana are meager, yet enough has been received to prove that the friends of the insurgents in the Span- ish capital do not believe the report of Maceo’s death. The palace officials do not confirm the morning’s report by any fur- ther details, which leads the Cubans to think that this is only a canard intended to intluence the American Congress now in session. The leaders here have made dili- gent inquiry teday, but have received noth- ing to induce them to believe that Maceo has beew killed. A special to the Jacksonville Citizen from Key West says: The correspondents’ re- ports from Havana this cvening differ in details regarding the reported death of Maceo. The story is not thcught to be true, but it is betieved to have been sent out by the Spanish government to s' activi in Congress fer the relief of th surgents. American correspondents s couriers to the scene of the battle, they were chased back to the ci Spanish troo, Gen. Weyler telegraphed from Ariemisa to Havana for reimforce- ments on the 7th instant, stating that he had Macco hemmed in. passed out. Major Cirujeda’s Sto The contident claims of the ficials in Havana that they have abundant proof of the death of Antonio Maceo and his young aid, Francisco Gomez, son of Maximo Gomez, continue without abate- ment. Major Cirujeda, who commanded the Spanish forces in the engagement at Punta Brava, said yesterday to the Asso- ciated Press correspondent that when the rebels were routed i: was evident that the body cf the chief was abandoned on the field. The Spanish column, without stop- ping to explore the field, went in hot pur- suit of the insurgents and followed them for a mile or mcre. Meantime, young Gomez is supposed to have committed sui- cide by Maceo’s While the troops were returning to Gua- tao, after the pursuit had ceased, various guerrillas belonging to Major Cirujeda’s command went over the field where the rout of the insurgents had occurred, and searched the bodies remaining there for anything of importance. “The body.of Maceo,’ Major Cirujeda con- tinued, “was relieved of a ring, clothing, etc. The guerrillas who performed the act were at the time quite unaware that the body was that of Maceo. In fact, little at- tention was paid to the identity of the bodies. 1t was already dark on the field, and it was raining. Various other bodies were also searched.” It was a1 adjutant, according to Major Cirujeda’s further statement, who insisted that the above mentioned body and the cther which was lying by its side were evidently of first-rate importance, and that they must not thus be left without identifi- ion. The two bodies were, therefore, tied by the feet to the tails of some horses,” Cirujeda went on to relate, dragged over the ground, the intention be- ing to carry them to town for identifica- tuicn. But after proceeding for a while the horses became tired with their burden, and the bodies were, therefore, cut loose and left in the road.” When the troops reached Guatao, Major Cirujeda proceeded to read the documents which had been found upon the bodies. Letter Found on the Youth, Following is a copy of the letter, written in pencil, which was found on the body of the youth supposed go be Francisco Go- mez: “Dear Mamma, Papa, Dear Brothers: I die at my post. I did not want to abandon the body of General Maceo, and I stayed with him. I was wounded in two places, and as I did not fall into the hands of the enemy, I have killed myself. I am dying. I die pleased at being in the defense of tee cause. I await for you in the other w ur son, FRANCISCO GOMEZ.” rorro, in San Domingo. riends or foes, please transmit to its destination as requested by one dead.” It is learned that the name of the bugler of the San Quenion is Franco. Major Cirujeda became convinced that the bodies were those of Antonio Maceo end young Gomez. But it was then too late to return and recover them. With the insurgents in the battle, Major Cirujeda says, was a beautiful amazon about twenty-two years of age, who urged the rebels “a la machete,” but at the same time interposed to prevent the killing of the prisoners. Announcement in Madrid. The official announcement of the death of Antonio Maceo and Francisco Gomez, the son of Maximo Gomez, has been published in Madrid, and has caused the greatest en- thvsiasm. Crowds of students marched through the streets, manifestations were held in front of the ministry for the colo- nies, and the crowds cheered for Spain, the army and for Major Cirujeda. Senator Canovas del Castillo, the Spanish rremier, expressed the belief that the death of Maceo would effect a change in the cam- peign in-Cuba. Other politicians estimated that the rebellion there would be sup- pressed by the spring. The Imparcial notes the coincidence of the success of the Spanish arms in Cuba wend the declaration of impotence which President Cleveland ascribes to Spain. Similar articles appear in special editions of the other papers, and there is great en- thvsiasm in other circles over the news of Maceo’s death. A delegation paid a visit to the war office and expressed to General Azcarraga the popular admiration for the army. Minister De Lome’s Advices. The following dispatch in detail confirma- tory of his previous advices was received last night by Minister De Lome from the Spenish minister of foreign affairs: “The insurgent leader, Antonio Maceo, realizing the impossibility ef remaining in Pirar del Rio province, and being con- stantly pursued by Spanish columns, crossed. the trocha on the 4th Instant. He was at the head of over 2,000 men, whom he had recruited from the local bands of the western part of the province of Ha- Vana, when he was overtaken by Major Cirujeda’s column, 350 men strong. Ma- ceo’s forces were routed, the leader being killed in the engagement, and Maximo Go- mez’s son committing suicide, after being wounded. The eorpses have been identi- fied, and their clothing, arms and docu- ments found in their possession were taken by Spaniards. The remainder of the band have dispersed in consequence of this trilliant victory of our troops.” State Department Uninformed. The State Department is still without di- rect official news of the reported killing of Maceo and young Gomez in Cuba. Senor De Lome, the Spanish minister, called at the department today, as is his custom on The Busy Corner, 8th and Market Space. S. Kann, Sons & Co.
