Ac: bas been awarded to the Maryland Manu- facturing and Construction Company for the instailation of a fifth power generator unit to supply reserve power in case of emergency. This plant will include an 800 horse power Greene tandem compound en- gine, directly connected to a 00 kilowatt railway generator. Another multipolar improvement which & being made at this building is the installation of a large coal handling plant. When this 1s completed and put in service the coal wil te dumped from cars outside the power Station, and underneath the railroad tracks. From this hopper the coal will be passed through a crusher and carried by means of buckets traveling on an endless chain to a large storage bin. Extensions are also now in progress with the overhead work so as to allow the electric locomotives to couple with pas- Senger trains after they back out of Cam- den stauion, and will be finished in a few days, Another extension at the north end of the tunnel will enable the electric loco- motive to haul trains to the vicinity of St. Paul street extended, more than a milo from the point to which the electric en- sine hauls freight wains. This will dispense with the use of a help- ing engine anu also abate t .aused by the smoke of two steam nuisance pmo- tives, which on account of the heavy rade there have to be used, but which nevertheless, are a source of great com. plaint on the part of a large number of residents of the entire northern sec tion of the city. The Baltimore and Ohio complement of electric locomotives is to be increased by the addition of a “baby wonder.” The contract building this was awarded to the General Electric Company, which built the big locomotive. The specit call for a smail electric locomotiy is expected, will be delivere: in a few days. in This, when put his, it lar use, will be employed in switching cars in the castern section of the city, where a string of horses now does the work. An overhead trolley wire similar to those the street railway companies will be employed for this servi The Baltimore and Ohio y ever it is practicable to do 0, t tricity, and it is expected that the system of hauling freight cars between Camden station and the warehouses of the different commission men to whom the contents of the cars are consigned, and which for more than forty years has been done by horses, will be done away with in the near future and an electric system substituted. Great interest is being manifested jn the electrical department of the Baltimore and Qhio, and hardly a day pas that the power station at Baltimore is not visited by some prominent foreigner. A distinguished French engineer, who had visited the elec- trical plant recently at Niagara Fails and other important plants, said th Balti- more and Ohio had in their plant the most impressive electrical undertaking in Amer- ica. s, wher- use elec- Impor: nec The Baltimore and Ohio, it is learned on good authority, is about to commence the construction of an important » of rail- road through the Beaver vailey of Penn- sylvania, which, when completed, will, through the Pittsburg and Western, it is expected, increase their transportation business to a very large extent. The Baltimore and Ohio has been, it is said, for years seeking an entrance into the Beaver valley to get a share of the heavy hauling there, but until quite recent- ly _was unable to secure a right of w The name of the new company will be the North Shore railroad. The line will be frem sixteen to eighteen miles long, and it will connect the Pittsburg and Lake Erie railroad at Beaver Falls with the Pitts- burg and Western at Colliery Junction. The preliminary survey was completed early in August, and two weeks ago the engineers began locating the permanent line. The route is said to be a feasible one, and will be an easier grade than any here- tofore suggested. The cost of construc- tion will also be small. The Beaver Falls terminus will be just atove the Pittsburg and Lake Erie depot. A charter has been granted the company for a bridge across the Beaver river, which calls for the right for a street railway, steam railway, vehicles and foot passen- gers. The bridge will be twenty-five feet above the Pittsburg and Lake Erie railroad. Crossing to New Brighton, the old canal bed will be followed to the end of the town. The Beaver river will be skirted to the mouth, and the Ohio river will then be followed for several miles. A private com- pany which owns a railroad three miles long have contracted to let the new com- pany make use of that, and a new track will be built from that to Callery Junction. The Rochester council has been asked to give the new railroad company the right of way along the river bank. The New Brighton council will also be requested to The North Shore Railroad Compa: a be independent of the Pittsburg and West- ern railroad. The new line will cross the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Chicago rail- road far above grade at a place called Con- way. Increased Busine: The transportation business of the Bal- timore and Ohio continues to increase to an immense extent, and so great is the ne- cessity for making every effort on the part of the company to meet the great demands upon their equipment and track that in some places along the main line to the west two sets of men are constantly em- ployed on track work, and the work is carried on both aay and night, gasoline lamps being used during the latter period to enable the men to see what they are doing. At those places along the Potomac river where for years past almost every time there was a high rise of water the tracks were washed away the latter are being moved and placed on higher ground, so that damages by flood at these points may be, if possible, obviated for the future, RUSSELL DEPARTS. JUSTICE He and His Party Enjoyed Their Visit to Washington. Lord Chief Justice Russell and party left here this morning at 10 o'clock for New York, after a most enjoyable visit, during which they inspected the principal points of interest in and about the national capital. As stated in yesterday’s Star, the party visited Mount Vernon during the af- ternoon in a special car over the Mt. Ver- ron electric railroad. Lord Russell planted a tree near the tomb of Washington and secured a number of photographic views of the mansion and grounds. The return trip to the city was made by boat. In the even- ing the distinguished visitors were enter- tained at the Country Club by Mr. Calde- ron Carlisle. Before their return to Eng- land, Lord Russell and party will visit Sir Julian Pauncefote, the British ambas- sador, at Newport, and the President and Mrs. Cleveland at Gray Gables.
