THE EVENING STAR, SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 1896--TWENTY-FOUR PAGES. IN COOL WATERS Where the Boys Delight to Go Swim- ming Summer Evenings. ON THE BATHING BEACH Wharf Rats and How They Dodge the Policemen. THE SUNSET GUN ——e AFTER HE FREE BATH- ing beach Is very much in evidence these days, and thousands of people of all ages have al- ready had a dip in the big basin back of the monument. There is really nothing that brings more joy to the small boy than a swim, and the first warm day of spring Suggests a bath. As the days lengthen and Old Sol casts his influence on the Potomac, the opening of the bathing beach Is looked forward to with the greatest interest by the youngsters. The police officer who A Stern Chase. guards the usually property during the begin to inquire »pening of the beach before the out of the ground. As soon as the temperature of the water h legrees the wharf rats open season. It's swimming time, and that It fills the average boy s of hours in the cool water; of leaps from dizay heights, and baths in cool pools haunt his dreams. It is then that the school room becomes a bore, and the absent list Increases with the advent of warm weather. In the Early son. It is before the beach opens that the swimming fs the best. At least that ts the belief of the boys, who enjoy the element of danger incident to a plunge In the river ble result of being “chased It is a poor specimen of a boy, who le a policeman, ly does the guardian of the peace - of the daring swimmers. Then he braves every He stands upon the wharf until dives far out Into the river, and signifi- eantly putting his thumb to the iip of hi nose and giving his fingers a pecullar twist laughs with glee at the discomfited blue coat. After Sundown. There is another class of swimmers who do not care to brave the dangers-of losing a suit of clothes and possibly being arrest- ed. They scorn @ bathirg suit, and hence have no use whatever for the bathing beach. They glory in a swim unrestrained by swimming tights. Their time comes when the sunset gun announces to the cit- izens of Washington that Old Sol has dis- appeared behind the western horizon. It is then that the law allows bathing from the docks without bathing suits, and any warm evening @ passer-by along the wharves may see a group of anxious youngsters, almost entirely disrobed, walt- ing fer the boom of the big gun at the arsenal. What a race there is then to see which one will be the first overboard. And the echo of the sunset gun has hardly ceas- ed to reverberate among the hills of old Virginia before the water is Kterally alive with the swimmers, who extract the pleas- ures of outdoor Ife as oniy e smaii boy can. One after another, like so many gi- gantie frogs, they spring from old piles, the yard arms of vessels, distances that would make a mam dizzy, wholly uncon- sclous of the danger they ere running. The exuberance of youth is upon them, as they shoot through the air their voices sound high and shrill above everyth! else, The highest diver is the -great hero; the longest swimmer the envy of the gang. The river front {s well worth @ visit on a warm afternoon, and it does one good to linger a moment and watch the antics of Bhe boys. The policemen are powerless to | ”'4e6,18,20,27-83 interfere after the sunset gun sends its tidings up the river, and the blue coat stands gocl-naturedly watching the fun. Now and then, however, he has a duty to perform, Zor the color Mne is shraply drawn among the boys, and trouble is like- ly to happen if their unwritten laws are disregarded. As a general thing, the two classes keep to themselves and observe the unwritten bill of rights. Safety of the Bathing Beach. And, last of all, there is that class that prefer the safety which the bathing beach offers. When Superintendent Stevens throws open the gates and announces that the beach is ready for use, there is a scrambie for sults. There 1s no need of announcing a formal opening of the beach. All that is necessary for him to do is to tell one of the boys who frequent the beach that next Saturday the beach would be Opened, and he has a crowded house when Watching the Bathers. that day rolls around. They come from all sections of the city. Some with their tiny bundles of swimming outfits; others armed with only a nickel with which to rt it the beach. Of course, the of the visitors are boys, yet y sprinkling of men and wo- letter, however, do not make their appearance until the weather has set- tled the water is real warm. Up to the present time thousands have availed them- selves of the opportunity, and the record thus far exceeds the best yet made by the beach. There have been some improve- ments during the p year. A number of new bath houses have been erected, and there has been a freshening of things by the use of paint and whitewash. The Overseer. Officer Brown, who regulates the boys, has wormed his way into the hearts of the youngsters, which heretofore only beat for “Paddle Dave Cotter.” The sound of the paddie will be heard as of yore, but the familiar voice of Paddle Dave is silent. He is no longer of the beach, and his absence is marked. The boys have not allowed his absence to trouble them, however, and they are having all the fun possible. Out in front of the beach the gymnastic stand has been overhauled, and already the athletes are trying new tricks, with which to startle their friends when the day comes for the grand aquatic exhibition. This year Supt. Stevens proposes to outdo all previous ef- forts, and the annual exhibition will be on a larger scale than ever before attempted. The New Bathing Beach. Next year the beach will be abandoned, and the swimmers will move a short di: tance to the west, where Congress has au- therized an expenditure of $4,000 to get the Little Basin in condition for them. When this pool is improved it will be a model bathing place. At the present time it is one of the most beautiful spots to be found. It is at the foot of 17th street, and consists of a large body of water, probably six or eight acres in extent, with grassy banks lined with large weeping willows. It is Superintendent Stevens’ plan to throw a masonry bridge across the eastern end of the pool and construct flood gates. This bridge will be large enough to permit car- riages to drive across, and the drive will continue around the pool. The water will be drawn off every day or two, and when the tide rises fresh water will be admitted. Before anything is done the pool will be dammed and emptied. Contractors will then set to work to grade the bottom, allow- ing an average depth of about 5 feet. In the center a large elliptical platform, se- curely anchored, will mark the deep water, where proficient swimmers may bathe. The pool at the present time is one of the most dangerous spots on the river, and a num- ber of boys have been drowned in its depths. It ts believed that with $4,000 Supt. Stevens can make a very creditable showing, and with the $1,000 appropriated for running expenses, give Washington one of the finest bathing pools in the country. —_—_-—__—_ Didn’t Bother Him. Fron: the New York World. The young man had his best girl with him and he wanted to tell her about it. Besides he was not interested in the sub- ject which the lecturer was discussing, “fhe American Indian's Use of Gourds.” The girl was pretty and to whisper into her little pink ear was a pleasure that few young men would have resisted. The lec- turer was annoyed. Finally he said, im- pressively: “I will pause until the young man in the back part of the house stops talking.” Then he stopped. For perhaps thirty seconds, though it seemed two min- utes, the lecturer said not a word, and the young man continued to tell the girl all ebout the subject on which he had startsd. Auditcrs turned around and stared at him, snd he was the center of interest. For a time he was oblivious of the attention that he was attracting, and then he noticed that the lecturer was silent and that all eyes were directed on him. Then he realized what the lecturer had sald about pausing until “the young man in the back part of the house stops talking.” He appeared to think that he would say something and he addressed the lecturer, saying, with great cordiality, “Go right ahead; you are rot bothering me. ——_—_-e+____ Friendly.
