A Washington enterprise, it is doubtless receiving encour- agement from Washingtonians. Wm. C. Harris’ “Fishes of North Ameri- ca,” now advanced to Part VIU, continues to maintain the high standard of excel- lence established at the outset. The letter- press and the engravings are remarkably good; the two colored plates, “The Large- mouthed Black Bass” and “The Bluefish,” could hardly be better. No. 1 of “The Savoy’’—a Londcn quarter- ly, published by Leonard Smithers—ts among the latest and most persistent claimants for popular favor on both sides cf the Atlantic. In a preparatory editorial note is this: “We intend to print no ver: which has not some close relationship with poetry, no fiction which has not a certain sense of what is finest in living fact, no criticism which has not some knowledge, discernment and sincerity in its judgment. A poem and a story and pictures all by j Aubrey Beardsley are prominent features | and give some idea as to the character of the publication. “The Black Cat” for April is in evidence. | Short stories are popular; good ones &: ul pecially so. Readers of this number wilt’ not be surprised to learn that the ‘Cat’ circulates to the extent of 200,000 copies per month. Miss Alice Hallowell’s “‘Forgetmenot” has achieved that second-edition success for | which so many authors yearn in vain.
