GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE Public Printer Benedict Believes in Adding to the Present Site. THE Suggestion of an Extension. The new building is constructed in the very best modern manner, and meets every, zequirement of a large manufacturing bus« iness, wo far us is possible in a narrow building. The roof has been finished with steel trusses, arranged in lean-to fash!on, suggesting the construction of a cimilar seven-story extension on the H strevt side. ‘Notwithstanding this evident forecast of what may possibly be done, the entire east- ern wall of the new building is provided with ample window spaces, and with the abundant light from the west, the upper floors furnish ideal working rooms for com- positors, binders and electrotypers. The electrotyping and stereotyping foundries, which do the vasi amount of work required in the government printing office, are now located in a fifth floor, which was built last year, on the south side of the building along Jackson alley. The job room also is on that additional floor. The new building has no entrance at fie street level, and communication with it is had entirely through the old building. Nec- essarily, the two lower floors must be light- ed with artificial iigtt, and of course the new building has deprived the old one of its light from the west windows. So that until Congress decides the puzzling ques- ton as to where the government printing office shall be located, or whether the pres- ent structure shall be rebuilt and utilized, there will be a continual and serious dis- advantage in the use of both the old and new buildings at the west end of these first two floors. It Will Save Rent. The new building will undoubted!y pro- duce a saving in the item of leased storaze room. Under the direction ef the jo!nt com- A BUSINESS VIEW For the past fortnight a special detail of employes in the government printing office has been occupied in moving Into the new wing on H street the machinery and ma- terlal which is to occupy that building. While this new structure occupies a ground space 27% feet wide, and extending from H street through nearly to the line of Jackson alley, a distance of 169 feet in the clear, it adds to the government printing office, with its seven stories, a total floor space avalla- ble of 31,836 feet, exclusive of wall thick- 475.3 FT : : : x 4 a > x 3 9, mittee on printing, the pubile printer last year leased 56,224 square feet of floor space for office uses and for stabling. About 3,- (4) square feet of floor space in addition to this was already under rental, an ae- gregate cmount of rent paid the office annually 1.ow amounts to $24,520. ‘The problem of housing the great print shop of the government has for many years been a question seriously debated by the advocates of more than one site, and numerous projects hive been considered for relieving the present tension and crush of work in that bureau. Public Prinzer Benetict is inclined to believe that the wirest course to be pursued would be to acquire zl] the ground in the square partly occupied by the government printing office and then build gradually, but upon a large, well-thovght-out scheme, the great oflice which should be built to meet the ce stuntly increosing demands rade upon this important bureau. The voverrment owns now in that rot quite cne-fourth. The squar feet wide by 774 fect long, ma area of 27 square feet, ness. The entire available floor space of the old building, which extends eastward from this new wing 36 feet, with a uni- form width of 1 feet, is about 210,000 feet, exclusive of wall thickness. The new building has been designed so as to relieve the crowded floors of the old building, and at the same time be conyeni- ent for use in conjunction with the various divisions of the office that now occupy the four floors of that building. This arrangement suited Mrs. Foster in every respect, as she had been earnestly hoping that she would be able to present her husband with a son rather than a daughter.
