20 IN MUSICAL CIRCLES Decided Activity is Being Disp'ayed in A the Local Organizations. . . Georgetown Orchestra to Continue Rehearsals as Usual — Capitol Glee Club's Prospects—Other Items. ‘The Choral Society will now intermit the rehearsal of “Samson and Delilah” and next Monday night will take up “The Mes- siah,” which is to be given during the Christmas holidays. As this latter oratorio is given every season, it does not need so much rehearsal as one which {s new, but familiarity with the work should not in- duce carelessness on the part of the mem- ers of the society, and the attendance should be regular. The musical director and the members of the executive board feel gratified that there has been so large an attendance of ladies at every rehearsal this season, and they hope that the gen- tlemen will come up with equal promptitude from now on. Thus far the male voices have been weak, and the attendance of gentlemen has by no means equaled the number of names upon the secretary's list. The society is in better condition finan- cially now than ever before, and the board feels that its efforts to make this the most Prosperous season in the history of the so- ciety should be supported by every member ef the society. The rehearsals of Mendelssohn's “Hymn of Praise’ by the Choir League, are pro- gressing satisfactorily. It is probable that instead of giving this performance on Thanksgiving, as was first intended, it may be postponed until some time about Christ- mas, in order to allow other choirs, that have signified a desire, to join the league. The music committee of the teachers’ ba- zaar has mapped out a plan that will prove an attractive feature during every night of that fair. It is probable that the Marine Bard will volunteer, and there will also probably be an orchestra of twenty pieces. It is expected that the various clubs—banjo, rmiardolin and guitar, as well as glee clubs— will volunteer to appear during the duration of the bazaar. and those should communt- cate with Mr. W. H. Daniel, 427 1th street southwest. The Manuscript Society of New York, which has done so much to gain recogni- tion to the American composer, has built a new club house at No. 17 East 22d street, which was formally opened last evening with an exhibition of manuscripts, com- prising, besides compositions, also some very valuable specimens of the old mas- ters. The present membership of the ty is 800, and Emil Paur, Anton Seidl, Walter Damrosch, Xaver Schar- wenka and other prominent names will be found on the list. Four public concerts will be given, the first one with miscellaneous orchestral compositions, under the direc- tion of Adolf Neuendorf; the second con- cert will be devoted to chamber music, chorus and solos; the third will offer selec- tio from Scharwenka’s opera ‘*Matas- wintha"’ and Klein's “Kenilworth; the last concert will bring some new sym- Phonic compositions. Besides six private concerts will be given, these meetings be- ing notable also for their sucial features, as receptions to Adeline Patti, Mr. and Mrs. Henschel, Mme. Nordica and others are intended to be given in their connec- tion. Membership is not restricted to compos- ers, but is extended to all professional mu- sicians. The scope of the society is such that every progressive musician should identify himseif with the movement. The new club house will serve as headquarters for musicians of the whole country. Ap- plicants for membership should communi- e _witRout delay with Mr. Ernest Lent pf 1528 Corcoran street, who is honorary corresponding secretary for this city. ‘The Capital Glee Club was called together Tuesday of last week at Mr. Cloward's new quarters, 1116 F street, for the first time this year, the attendance for a first meet- ing of the year being the largest in the history of the club. The enthusiasm that was displayed by the members present to take up this year's work and make it a success was very encouraging to all. The recollection of last season's concert at Metzerott’s and the trip to Richmond serv- ed to make the members express their de- termination to outdo both this season. While the club is composed of the best male voices in the city, a number of very desirable applications were received. The Membership is limited to forty, and as the club has some thirty odd names on its roll, but few vacancies remain, and any one desiring to apply should do so at once. ‘The annual election of officers and mem- bers of the board of directors occurred and resulted as follows: S. S. Shedd (re-elected), president; B. Willis Magruder (re-elected), vice president; M. Le Roy Gough, corre- spending secretary; Edw. O. Asmussen (re- elected), financial secretary; B. W. Beebe (re-elected), treasurer; N. Du Shane Clow- ard, director; W. S. Hutchinson, librarian, and O. C. Hine (re-elected), H! H. Craft (re-elected) and A.M. Forrester as mem- bers of the board. Miss Alice Judson of this city is an- nounced as one of the sopranos of the Hinrichs Grand Opera Company, which will begin its series of performances in Phila- delphia November 12. At the first meeting of the board of di- rectors of the Georgetown Amateur Orches- tra, held last Wednesday evening, a num- ber of routine matters were considered and the treasurer submitted his report. It was decided to at once resume active operation, and the rehearsals will be continued as usual. The selection of a musical con- ductor is yet urder consideration, but will be decided in a short time, when due an- nouncement will be made, together with the date of the next concert. Mr. Will Haley, who is known as an ex- ce‘lent all-around musician, and who has bad long experienced in the United States Marine Band, has organized a military band, which numbers over thirty pieces, and which has been diligently rehearsing for some time. The organization is largely composed of those who are employed in the theater orchestras, a number of whom have been formerly connected with the Marine Fand, and, of course, all are good mu- scians. The w rk of this bond at rehearsal is highly commended, and its first concert, which will take place at Allen's Grand Opera House some time this ed forward to with interest. Mr. Haley has developed g901 ability as a leader, and has composed two marches, which will firse be heard by this band. The many friends of Mr. Fred Liliibridge who is now at the head of the musical fac. ulty of Ripon (W ) College, will be in- terested to know of his success at that in- stitution. At a recent concert given by the f.culty, Professor Lillibridge’s piano num- month, is look- bers were praised in the highest terms by the commonwealth of Ripon. His_ selec- tons included two p $ by Rinck, and Chopin's ““Pranermarsch Peethoven’s “Aurora Sonata Hungarian Rbapsoly Pesides, there was a song, Could Quite Forget,” by Mr. Lillibr ranged for volce, organ, piano and ‘The vocal score was sung by Mrs. Lridge, Who made a decided sen on the organ, and and Liszt’ on the Lilll- tion not only in this, but in other numbers, includ- »yerbeer aria and an Arditi waltz. It may surprise some of his friends here to know of Mr. Lillibridge’s marri. he was quietly wedded to Miss Lot’ of Stockholm, Sweden, and a graduate ot the Royal Couservatory of Munich. She ts said to possess a soprano voice of excep? tional capabilities, and is now a with her husband in the musi Rr College. a BROOKLAND, The many friends of Mr. Geo. E. T. Miller, who has been very ill with typhoid fever, will be glad to hear that he is much better. ‘The Methodists of Brookiand are anticipat- Ing a Sunday school sociable, which will take place soon. Evangelist Elsom, who has been conduct- f&« services at the Baptist Church all the week, will continue his services until Mon- day, ané it is probable that he will stay a few days longer. During Mr. Elsom’s visit has always had ad by his personal mag- von the esteem of many of his rmons have been interesting and several conversions and instructive uve been made. Helen and nne Johnston, who ending the summer with thelr Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Johnston 0 eet, have returned to their home - delphia. Mrs. P. H. Johnston accompanied them, and she will remain in Philadelphia Bome time. Mrs. Sparhawk of South Brookland has THE EVENING STAR, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1895-TWENTY PAGES. gone to Texas on a visit to her daughter. She will return by way of Florida, where she will spend some time at St. Augustine, and may go to Europe before she returns to Brook- land. She has rented her house to Dr. Flint. Prof. Burg was quite anxious when he read of the earthquake in Rome, for Mrs. Burg and their son, Eddie are stopping there, but as he received no dispatch he ccneluded that they had suffered no harm. At the regular monthly meeting of the Citizens’ Association held in the Town Hall last night President Lynch made a state- ment of the improvements projected and es- timated for in this subdivision by the Com- missioners and what had been told him per- scnally by the District officials. He also stated that the work of repairing the side- valks had already begun, and that all the beardwalks would be put in good condition. The flag crossings had not been given, but it was hoped they would come in due time. He said that if the Commissioners’ estimates were allowed to stand Brookland would re- ceive her share of improvement next year. —<—<—___ HYATTSVILLE. Considerable excitement prevailed in the neighborhood of Locust avenue a few days since. The dry grass and weeds on the side of the railroad caught fire from a spark frem the engine of a passing train and swept down the side of the bank on the field below, reaching the fence surrounding the prop- erty of Mr. Seth A. Holton, which was soon in a blaze. Mr. Holton made every effort to extinguish the fire, but it got beyond his control. The frightened ladies in the neigh- borhood, whose male protectors were ab- sent from home at the time, came to Mr. Holton’s assistance with buckets of water, which they threw upon the flames. One young lady had her dress badly burned in fighting the fire. A messenger was sent for help, and a number of men, in answer to his summons, appeared upon the spot and suc- ceeded in subduing the flames. For awhile it looked as if the houses in the immediate neighborhood would be destroyed. The Tierney fire company was out last evening on its first practice drill. About ten young men, in charge of Marshal Wilson and his assistants, drew the engine through the streets of the village, sounding the bell at a lively rate. Both the democratic and republican par- ties are exerting every effort to elect their candidates for county offices. For the past two weeks meetings have been held at dif- ferent places in the county every night, and have been largely attended. The districts of Laurel, Vansville, Bladensburg and Spald- ings usually give large democratic majori- ties, while the districts of Marlboro’, Not- tingham, Brandywine. Queen Anne and Bowie generally go largely republican. Kent, Piscataway, Oxen Hill and Surratt’s give small democratic majorities, and in Aquasco district the vote is about even. If the republicans succeed in maintaining their usual majorities in their strongholds, man- age to cut down the vote in the large demo- cratic districts, and carry some of the dis- tricts that. give small democratic majorities, they will undoubtedly win the day; but, on the other hand, if the democrats carry the four upper districts by their usual majority, lessen the republican vote in the strong re- publican districts, and carr? the districts that have been giving small democratic ma- jorities, they will be triumphant. Mrs. R. J. Lawrenson and children have returned from an extended visit to relatives in North and South Carolina. Mrs. Mary Gordor Bailey gave a pleasant All Halloween party last Thursday mght at the home of her father, Capt. Gordon, T. S. A., retired, in Bladensburg. The diver- sions of the evening were those usually characteristic of the eccasion, and were much enjoyed. Mr. James C. Rogers and Mr. Phil. Clarke gave a clever representa- tion of Punch and Judy. Miss Mae Rogers sang “Heart's Delight” In her usual charm- ing manner. Solos were sung by Dr. Car- roll of Washington, Mr. James C. Rogers and Mr. Phil. Clarke. A supper was served during the evening. The arrangements of the dining hall were both unique and elab- orate. On the mantels were placed skeleton pumpkins, upon which were carved the fea- tures of the human face, shown by means of a light placed within. A huge head of cab- bage was secured to the ceiling directly over the center of ‘the dining table, suspended from which were cards laden with apples and popcorn. Among those present were Capt. and Mrs. Gordon, Mr. and Mrs. Bailey, Misses Cora and May Rogers, Lolo and May Tricou, Bessie Bailey, Ada Lepper and Mat- tie Darnall, Dr. Carroll of Washington, Messrs. James C. Joseph, S. and Harris Rogers, Phil. Clark and Edward A. Fuller. SSS BRANDY STATION Mrs. Miller of Dallas, Texas, who has been the guest of her sister, Mrs. C. T. Fowler, has returned to her home. Mr. and Mrs. Fowler went to Philadelphia on Wednes- day to spend the winter with their daugh- ter, Mrs. R. I. Eggleston. Mrs. Carter Page is back from a visit to her former home near Leesburg, and is ac- companied by her sister, Mrs. Hammond, and her father, Col. Giddings. The latter will make his future home in Brandy. The King’s Daughters held a meeting at the residence of Dr. McClannahan to con- sider the arrangements for their annucl Thanksgiving dinner. A large quantity of red heart cedar and walnut logs are being shipped to Europe from Brandy Station. An unusual number of fires are of recent occurrence. The barn belonging to Mr. Bruce Stringfellow upon the farm occupied by Mr. Smith near Elkwood was enticely consumed a few evenings since. A spark from a pipe was supposed to be the cause of the conflagration. Later, the barn of lay- ette Shackleford near J. T. Beckham's was burned; supposed to have been set on fire. Forest fires raged early in the week on Mt. Pony and Cole's Hill, and the rain breaking the drouth was most heartily welcomed. A serious accident occurred to the children of Mrs. Joseph Carpenter while driving to school at Brandy. Near the top of Wine's hill a portion of the harness broke and the horse ran away, throwing all out of the ve)i- cle. Little Ernest Carpenter was picked up unconscious, with wounds in his head, and is In a dangerous condition. His er, Grace, had one rib broken and her neck badly injured. Leilah Carpenter was seri- ously bruised, and Naomi Abbott, daughter of Chauncey Abbott of Brandy, was tossed into the creek at the foot of the hill and slightly hurt. KENSINGTON.
