Many Matters Considered at the Meet- ing Last Night. The regular weekly meeting last night of the Federation of Labor was well at- tended — thirty-eight organizations being represented. President James F. McHugh, having returned to the city, occupied the chair. The Paper Hangers reported that those of their members who were in the employ of Mr. H. J. Long at the time of his assignment have settled their claims with the assignee on a basis of 50 per cent, and signed an agreement releasing the estate from all future claims on that account. The delegates from the Butchers’ As- sembly were admitted and obligated. A communicaticn was read from a cloth- ing merchant, who has been on the unfair list for a long time, stating that he is now willing to sign the usual contract, and asking that the boycott be removed, but the Federation declined to take any ac- tion in the matter until the Carpenters’ Council, which made the original com- plaint, and to whom the request was re- ferred, shall have made a report on the subject. The committee to whom was referred a complaint that the eight-hour law was being violated by the District Commis- sioners in the matter of grading Sherman avenue. reported that since the matter was brought to the attention of the Federation the violation has ceased. The Paper Hangers and Plasterers re- ported that their assemblies had voted to indorse the “fair” card issued by the Laundry Workers. The Street Railway Assembly reported that a lock-out, as reported in The Star of yesterday, exists on the Anacostia rail- way, and that President Griswold had taken this action because the men in his employ who were being paid $1.50 per day were not willing to accept a reduction of 25 cents. The attention of the Federation was call- ed to the fact that the labor bureau has opened an office on 13th street for the transaction of business, and that it is de- sired that all persons who are members of societies of organized labor and may be cut of employment shall call and register. >_— The Labor Organizations. At the last meeting of the Bricklayers’ Union at their hall, corner of 7th and L streets northwest, the committee on Labor day celebration submitted their final report, which was accepted and adopted, and the committee discharged, after being given a vote of thanks by the union. A committee from the Laundry Workers, who were admitted, asked that the mem- bers patronize only what are known by the former as “fair” laundries. It was agreed to indorse the “fair” list. ‘An invitation from the Electrical Workers to join with them in their proposed night parade during the session of the conven- tion of the National Brotherhood of Elec- trical Workers, which convenes in Wash- ington November 11, was accepted. ‘A well-attended meeting of Butchers’ As- sembly was held Sunday. The card of the Laundry Workers’ Assembly containing a list of “fair” laundries was indorsed. Sev- eral new members were obligated. oe Sage Chas.
