Eight hundred men and boys will be given employment. ——__+e+_____ Silver Men Against Brice. Allan W. Thurman is out in an interview yesterday, in which he gives an account of a free silver conference held at his office at which, he says, all the congressional districts of the state were represented. He reports they are enthusiastic, and that they have perfected plans to join the Spring- field convention and force a_ resolution through in accordance with their views. He also says the free silver men propose to openly oppose Calvin S. Brice for the Senate, and have another candidate for the place. LIGHT IN DARK PLACES The Central Union Mission in Shea’s Oourt and the “Division.” A Gradual Change Going On—Some Ef« forts in Opposition to the Cam- paign of the Werkers. The Central Union Mission is carrying war into Africa nowadays with a ven- geance. It is engaged in a vigorous cam- Paign against vice and wrong-doing. Two skirmishes are now in progress in separated fections of the city, but each with a most unsavory reputation for peace and morality, Shea’s Court, down in South Washington, and the area known as the “Division” aré the scenes of nightly engagements between , right and wrong, and gradually the man- agers of the mission feel the tide of vic- tory is turning thelr way. The special effort that is now making in what might at first seem these hopeless fields ts to show their denizens that they are leading unprofitable lves, from a physical, ma- terial standpoint. Once their thought has been arrested and their minds have been directed toward the fact that they are doing themselves needless injury by con- tinutng to exist in defiance of all the laws of morality, it is believed the first great step forward has been taken. The rest is comparatively easy for such zealous work- ers as the mission sends into these quarters, Shea's court was one of the most no- torious regions in Washington. It has the scene of more reckless opposition law and order and has during Jate months been unusually prominent before the public. It was at one time known by the less eu- phonious name of “Louse alley,” and from 114 4% street to 825 Maryland ‘avenue Maryland Avenue Branch of the Cen- tral U m Mission. 4 southwest. It was formerly thickly populat- ed with denizens of the lowest order, and a less promising field for Christian work could scarcely be imagined. But It is 6° eculiarity of the workers of the Central Jnion Mission that they are always more eager to labor among the most fallen of their kind, and it is from them that they — the most earnest converts to better lives. The renovation of the court has now been in progress several months, and has been accomplished by means of a little mission that has been established on Maryland ave- nue, very near the mouth of the alley. A steady transformation is going on in the entire section, not only in the class of peo- ple who are living in the houses in the yi- cinity, but in the general atmosphere of the place. The owner of most of the pro} in the court is earnestly In sympathy wit the movement, and is lending efficient ald by causing changes for the better among the tenants. Gradually the’ houses that have been filled by immoral persons have been rented to a more upright class of men and women, although poor, who are neaine to give a new character to the place: The mission is open all the time, and ju in charge of earnest workers, who give their neighbors every encouragement to enter and rest, if not to take part in the services that are held every event Meanwhile, there is a subcurrent of work being done with individuals, and the num- ber of conversions reported from this branch is really surprising, A similar kind of work is being done in the “Division.” Some months ago board of managers of the mission decid to enter this forbidding field, and in prose- cution of this decision midnight meetings were held in the streets. Then a room was Shea's Court. = hired in the heart of the region, to be used as a rendezvous and a shelter for the “I ers. From the start the effort was attended with the success of attracting the at tion of the inhabitants. Ci sity led interest, and already this interest hag awakened into real concern in sev cases, The workers are going on the belief that it Is better to rescue one individual from # life of shame than to punish a hundred | infractions of the laws of the municipality, ‘There has now been one case of gen! repentance. A young woman who chosen this wretched life has been led into a pure association by the agents of the mission, and is now living in respectable society, married and happy. As soon as this movement became known, certain persons, with interests of a sort, set about to defeat the plans of the mission people, and actually succeeded in getting the room away from the work leaving them without a footing. But th earnest people were not discouraged. They, went to work at once to re-establish them- selves, and, by operating through a real estate firm, succeeded in getting a cert house of bad resort, cleared of its immo. tenants, and took a lease of the property, As soon as the identity and character the new occupants became known an effo) that is described by the managers of mission as “frantic and amusing” made to influence the owner to cancel the lease, but he stood to his bargain. He unt told that if the mission were allowed obtain a foothold in the “Division” thé regular tenants would be driven away, and . the houses would stand idle. An offer, it said, of eighty per cent increase in rental was made, provided the mii should be excluded, but so far he has unmoved by threats and entreaties. The property is now about to be occupied by, the mission workers. i The greatest difficulty in all this work, say the managers, is to care for the women who leave their vicious lives and seek tem~- porary shelter and protection from the mission. There is no lack of room, but there is no money to pay the expense of boarding the women while they are being fitted for domestic service or other honora~ ble self-supporting work. ‘fhe fund has ‘been provided for this special object, it {s difficult to meet the cost of this wo! It costs about $2 a week to support woman. All inmates are required to but the employment is not lucrative, though places are found for the women far as possible, there are generally eight or ten living at the mission, who must be sus- tained for a series of weeks before they are provided for.
