26 SS THE EVENING STAR, SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA. A beautiful baptismal font which was con- structed In France upon the order of Rev. 'T. B. Hughes, pastor of St. Teresa’s Catho- lic Church, Anacostia, arrived at the church yesterday, and, after being placed in the position {t is intended to occupy, will be ecrsecratec with appropriate ceremonies. The font is Gothic in style and of exquisite workmanship, and altogether is probably one of the most attractive pieces of church furniture of the kind to be seen in the archdiocese of Baltimore. The extreme height of the font is a little over six feet. mprised in which are two figures of Christ and John the Baptist, the latter of whom is in the act of administering to Jesus the rite of baptism. The material ised in the construction of the font is un- Gerstood te be a combination of terra cotta and iron-stone china, which is said to pro- duce one of the most durable of all ma- terials. A font of sitnilar material, but lacking all the handsome effects of the one just placed in St. Teresa’s Church, can be Seen in the National Museum, Washington, and the latter is an exact reproduction of the font which has been In’ use for many years in Westminster Abbey, London. The members of the Hillsdale Citizens’ Association have, it is understood, about made up their minds that they want a post office for their own town, no matter what may be the final outcome of the move- ment on the part of some of the citizens of Anacostia to secure free delivery for both places, and a special meeting of the association will be held Monday night to further discuss the matter. AS soon as can be conveniently arranged thereafter the committee having the matter in charge, Messrs. James L, Johnson, Robert Waring and John H. Dale, will have a conference With the proper officers at the Post Office Department. in Washington and try to have the request granted. Already the names of several of the most progressive young men in Hillsdale have been men- tioned. in connection with the position of postmaster, and one enterprising citizen is So anxious to have the improvement con- summated that he is willing, it is said, to erect a suitable post office building at his own expense. The news received last night in Anacos- tia of the promotion of Acting Sergeant W. T. Anderson of the Anacostia substation to ths vacancy caused by the déath of Ser- geant Charles Kerby, was hailed with sat- isfaction by all classes of citizens, and Ser- geant Anderson has already been the re- cipient of many congratulations. Capt. George D. Graham and Messrs. Os- bosne Dorsey and James L. Johnson, who were appointed a committee on the part ef the Hillsdale Citizens’ Association to call on the District Commissioners and ask for various much needed improvements in the town will attend to that duty Monday next.
