Pursell of Anacostia were quietly married at 7 o'clock on Thursday evening last at the parsonage of the Elworth Street Independent Metho- dist Church by the pastor, v. J. D. Wil- gon. HYATTSVILLE. The liquor cases against Stegmater and Giffords came up before Justice Carr yes- terday morning. Stegmaier, who was charged with selling liquor on Sunday, asked for a jury tri and the case was held for the circuit court at Marlboro, the defendant giving bail to the amount of $250 for his appearance. There were three charges against Gifford: selling beer on Sunday, selling liquor to minors, and selling cigarettes without a license. Owing to an error in the warrant, which did not con- form with the statute, ‘the first charge was dismissed. He was found not guilty of the second charge, and the third charge was also dismissed. Stegmaler kept the saloon on the grounds where the Coxeyites are encamped, and Gifford keeps the Georg Washington House, on the place where the Galvinites are located. The Tuesday Evening Literary Society met at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jack- son H. Ralston last Tuesday night. Sir Walter Scott was the first poet selected for the evening discussion. Mr. F. A. Holden delivered an address on Sir Walter Scott; Mrs. H. N. Ralston gave an interesting description of the places made famous by Scott, having visited most of them, and Miss Nellie Moran read an essay on “The Life of Scott.” Recitations were given by Mrs. J. H. Ralston and Miss Julia Seaman. Dr. and Mrs. A. M. Buck have issued invitations to the marriage of their daugh- ter, May Douglas, to Mr. Wilbur Fisk Drown of Washington, which will take Place at the Presbyterian Church of this Village, Wednesday evening, June 27, at 8:30 o'clock. Mr. Joseph Ireland, a tenant on the farm of Mr. T. Blake Brooke in Queen Anne district, started from the village of Queen Anne a few evenings since in a boat to go home. The boat has been found floating bottom upward on the river, and Mr. Ire- land has not yet been heard from. His wife and friends are very much concerned over his disappearance, and fear that he has been drowned. A novel entertainment was given at Da- mascus today under the auspices of the town commissioners, consisting of a picnic, game of base ball, populist speeches and prizes to the prettiest lady and the ugliest man, to be determined by a vote of those present. Several persons piaying ball on a vacant lot on Frederick avenue were arrested and taken before Mayor Duvall by Bailiff Eng- sh on Friday evening. A few flags and a meager display here and there of bunting, and a sprinkling of | stragglers from distant companies are the only reminders of the great firemen’s dis- play here during the past two days, and the event goes down to history as the greatest of its kind ever held in this section of the state. There were 1,300 men in line in the parade, with twenty-nine visiting compa- nies, to say nothing of the many pieces of handsome apparatus and prancing steeds that made up the pageant.
