Two rifles had been varnished or painted or polished in some way. Two rifies had very dirty chambers. One man lowered piece to the “order” very noisily. One man lowered hammer before closing chamber. Company C—This company presented a very good appearance and went through in- spection and muster with a snap that show- ed careful instruction and attention to drill. The leutenant did not strictly adhere to the position laid down in the drill regulations during the inspection of the company. The opening of the cartridge boxes was done in @ very st-aggling manner. Steadiness in ranks was excellent, with the exception of an inclination on the part of a few men to watch the inspector. Sixteen men the piece with the first two fingers of the right hand under the gun sling at an “or- and one man kept his feet closed to- gether. The movements in the manual of arms rendered necessary at inspection and muster were well execute!. The officers had no sword knots. Four men were with- out figure “5” on helmet shield. Two men raised pieces from “order” to “inspection arms” improperly. One man had letter C placed on coat collar backward. Four men came to “order” from “inspection arms” without steadying piece with left hand. Company D.—The appearance of this com- pany was not up to the mark. There was a decided absence of military bearing, and a thorough cou-se of instruction in “school of the soldier,” together with “setting-up drill,” is much needed. The first Neutenant and first sergeant did not hold swords cor- rectly at an “order.” Only three men held the first two fingers of right hand over the gun sling at an “o-der." The lieutenants did not take position laid down in drill regulations during the inspection of the company. At the command “attention” several men executed “right dress.” The opening of the cartridge boxes was exe- cuted with great irregularity, and there was @ great amount of unsteadiness in the Company C.—This company presented @ Presented very excellent ce and remarkable si ess In ranks. Three men did not know the position of a soldier. The captain allowed the company to remain at an “order” during the muster. The captain Wore a water-proof cover on cap. Chew Camp, Sons of Confederate Vet- erans, in acknowledgment of its offer to escort the Grand Army post, who intended to go Fredericksburg to decorate the graves of the Union and confederate soldiers on May 3. The date was afterward changed to May 30, which confiicted with the ar- rangements Chew Camp had made to go to Richmond to the dedication of the soldiers and sailors’ monument.
