Among the exhibits at the Art Students’ League at the league rooms on Thursday night the work in charcoal of Miss Anna Lee was deemed worthy of especial men- tion, as possessing peculiar merit. The two rows of tenement houses on Jef- ferson and Polk streets, the property of Dr. Lyons, are being improved by the addition of front porticos by Contractor W. N. Free- man, under the supervision of Mr. Chas. F. Bears, foreman. Mr. H. C. Owen is making an addition to the residence of Mr. George ¥. Work on the large main sewer, that runs through the Christie estate, which has been delayed for months from lack of the neces- Sary appropriation, is being rapidly pushed te completion. —_—>__ FREDERICK. ‘The main line of the Baltimore and Ohio Failroad between Frederick and Baitimore ‘was opened for traffic yesterday, after hav- ing been closed since Sunday. Trains are not yet running on schedule time, however. The washout was one of the worst in the history of the road. The Frederick Society for the Suppression of Vice and Crime, recently organized here, is already taking steps in the direction of its mission, and will soon make a move to suppress gambling and various other viola- tions of the law brought to its notice. Charies W., or “Peon,” Robinson, colored, ef this city, who in February, 1888, was con- victed of an attempted assault on a white woman here, and sentenced to ten years in the state penitentiary, was pardoned by Gov. Brown on Thursday, with the pro- vision that immediately upon his release he Bhall leave the state and never return to it. Several men, claiming to be ex-members ef the Coxey army of the commonweal, and to have deserted in Washington, have ap- plied for work at various places here the few days. They eay that it will not be = before every man in the army will ve. Frederick’s new postmaster, Benjamin H. Blackston, will make radical changes in the clerical force of the it office, of which he @ssumes charge on Monday next. Few, if any, of the old clerks will be retained. The city aldermen of Frederick, at a spe- cial meeting on Thursday night, destroyed coupons that had been paid by the city reg- ister to the amount of $40,965.45. At a meeting of the Frederick County Historical Society on Thursday night Mr. Worthington Ross, a relative of the de- ecendants of Joha Adams, read a strong paper to establish the claim that Gov. Thomas Johnson of Maryland, and not John Adams, nominated George Washing- ten as commander-in-chief of the armies, the claim for Adams having recently been made in the year book of the Sons of the American Revolution. A horse belonging to Philip Flater at ‘Westminster, in Carroll county, developed symptoms of hydrophobia Monday while in the stable and became wild, biting the tim- ber of its stall and tearing out chunks of its own flesh. It was finally killed. The animal was bitten by a rabid dog about five ‘Weeks ago. ‘The five national banks of Frederick re- port an aggregate of $1,828,110.25 in individ- ual deposits subject to check now on hand, in addition to which nearly $700,000 is in the two local savings banks. Several hundred citizens of Frederick have Bigned a petition to the school commissioners for the erection of a new school building in this city for male scholars. The present building is thought to be entirely inadequate for the purpose. —_-. FALLS CHURCH. A delightful party was given last night by Mr. and Mrs. Proudfit, the occasion be- ing the celebration of their daughter Persis’ eighteenth birthday. A large number of handsome presents were received. Games and other social amusements were indulged in thé ast part of the evening and an elab- orate supper was served, after which danc- ing followed, and was kept up until a late hour. All seemed to enjoy them- selves to the utmost. Hawxhurst started this morning for Connecticut for a month’s visit to her sister, Mrs. W. D. Flower. Frank Barckley,a man with dark hair and eyes, very tall, with a large scar over his right eye, who has been living with Mr. C. 8. Lashorn, broke into Mr. Lashorn'’s house Wednesday night and stole $30 in cash and & revolver. Nothing has been seen of him since and a reward of $50 has been offered for his capture. An interesting lecture was given Thurs- @ay night at the Southern Methodist Church by Mr. Mesea, a native minister of Japan, to a large congregation. Mr. and Mrs. Tuckerman, who have re- os from their bridal trip, are visiting the Congregational Church met last Wed- nesday at the residence of Mrs. Macfarlan. An interesting report was read by Mra Pond of her daughter's work, who is a missionary among the Zuni Indians. Those present were Mrs. Fay, Mrs. Kinsley, Mrs. Eastman, Mrs Rorebeck, Mra. The meeting of the Teachers’ Association ef Prince George's county, held here yes- terday, was a success, the attendance being very large and the program an interesting one. The meeting was called to order by the president, Mr. W. C. Tippett, and Miss Ida Evereti acted as secretary. The roll was called, and neariy ail the teachers in the county were found to be present. The pupils of the schools of Laurel were pres- ent and sang several selections very cred- ftably. “How to Awaken an which was discussed by Misses Lillian Thomas, Anna M. Beall and ME WafMis. Mr. T. S. Stone, county examiner, was then introduced. and made @ few remarks, after which Prof. E. P Prettyman of the State Normal School was introduced, and delivered an address upon education, its advantages and necessity. The next item upon the program was a debate upon the question, Resolved, That free school books are beneficial to the pub- lic schools. In the affirmative, Messrs. J. K. Roberts and E. 8. Buckler; negative, Messrs. G. B. Dent and E. S. Burroughs. Among those present were Misses Gray, Cronmilier, Catrup, Ryon, Wilson and Townsend of Laurel, Bentley of Glendale, Gray of Hyattsville, Everett of Laurel dis- trict, Messrs. Pritchard of Branchville, Combs of Hyattsville, Tippett, Roberts, Dent, Buckler and Burroughs of the county and many others. In addition to the teach- ers, many visitors were present, who were greatly interested in the proceedings. Miss Mamie Perrie sang sweetly, and, taking the exercises ail together, they were of an interesting and instructive character. Eee BROOKLAND. The Brookland post office will hereafter be closed at 7 o'clock p.m., no mails de- parting or being received after that hour. Mr. Frank Galt and family removed from Hartford street, Brookland, last Saturday to Washington. Miss Virginia Dox, the eloquent mission- ary from Mexico, has purchased of Miss Grace Thomas a lot on Milwaukee street near 15th, East Brookland. Mrs. Sawtelle of Syracuse, N. Y., has re- cently become the owner of a pretty home site in South Brookland. Miss Mamie Clark of Sargent road had a very happy birthday this week, which was rounded off merrily in the evening by a pleasant social party. The yound lady re- ceived many mementoes of the occasion, among which was a handsome gold neck- lace, the gift of her fellow-members of the Daisy Club, the Misses Lanhardt, M. and K.
