1 IN THE CHURCHES he Sunday school excursion, with all its §eys for the children, and perhaps, too, for the older folks, is yet some little way off. The Potomac river resorts, which are com- monly the Meccas of these pilgrimages In quest of pleasure, do not open until about the middle of next month, but already Gates are being picked out for such events ‘by the church people who are interested that way. One must always prepare for Summer in winter, and so those who are forehanded in the matter of summer excur- sions have in many cases long before now Selected a date on which they plan to board & fast-flying palace steamer for the cool and Stassy lawns of some one of the river — Most of the excursions of the Sun- schools, at least, come before July, be- fore school closes or the little folks are packed off to their country relatives for the summer. Of course, on account of school, the events must usually come off on Sat- urday, and the sixth day of the week is usually at something of a premium for the @rst month of the excursion season. Al- feady a number of dates have been picked | out by different churches for their Sunday @chool picnics and excursions, and before ‘the time comes there will have been enough days set aside for such pleasures to make ® good part of the summer weather rainy, if the proverbial experience with Sunday school picnics and the weather bureau is to be taken at par. Rev. Mr. Anderson, who was officially ©alled to the pastorate of the Grace Baptist Church, corner of 9th and South Carolina avenue southeast, a couple of weeks ago, sent his final acceptance of the call to the congregation on Thursday of last week. Mr. Anderson is now studying at Bucknell University at Lewisburg, Pa., where he graduates this June. He has preached for Grace Church quite often this winter and will fill their pulpit Sunday after next, but will not take up his duties as pastor until June, when he has finished his university course. it is possi®le that he may be cr- dained in this city. In a recent issue of the Herald and Pres- byter on the front page are printed the pic- tures of Rev. George O. Little of this city, his father and three brothers. It is a min- isterial family, the father and his four booed | having all gone into the work. The father four sons have together preached over 165 years. Rev. Henry Little, D. D., was for years one of the most prominent figures in Presbyterianism in the Ohio valley. In fifty years he preached 17,000 sermons, saw 10,000 persons unite with the Presbyterian Church, and by personal persuasion led 200} Young men to enter the university. Rev. Joseph Brewster Little, D. D., the eldest of the four sons, is just finishing the eighth year of his pastorate at the First Presby- terian Church of Davepport, lowa. Rev. Henry 8. Little, D. D., the second son, is| the synodical missionary of Texas, and the Senior synodical superintendent of home missions. Rev. George O. Little, the third gon,is too well known here to need comment. | During the past twenty years he has built the Assembly Church up from small begin- Bings to its present prosperity. Rev. Charles H. Little, the third son, ts just now raising money for Coates College of Indiana, of which he is the vice president, having secured $6,000 within the last few months. Rev. Arthur Little, the son of Rev. George ©. Little of the Assembly Church here, is lkewise following the family bent. He has entered the ministry, and is now the pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Tacoma. G. James Jones, the pastor-of the Tabernacle Congregational Church, on 9th street near B street southwest, is still at his parents’ home near Marietta, Ohio. It Will be remembered that he left the city a few months ago on account of his health, which was very po@. Recent letters indi- cate that he is not much better, but with the summer and an extended rest it is| hoped that he will be well by fall. He was! gonsiderably broken down before leaving Washington. Rev. Mr. Seymore, who was formerly the pastor of the Fifth Congrega- tional Church, in East Washington, is now supplying the pulpit at the Tabernacle. The literary department of the Epworth League of the Anacostia Methodist Episco- pal Church held their spring meeting last Bight. A very interesting program was given, and a large number of guests were t. Nothing further has been done in regard to securing a new pastor for the Fifth Con- gregational Church, corner of 8th and I streets northeast. Various parties have been and are to be tried, but no decision has been reached by the church. The steeple of the Epiphany Protestant Episcopal Church, on G street between 13th and l4th streets, has been undergoing some slight repairs this week, and is to be re- painted. No alterations to speak of, how- ever, will be made. The members of the Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church, on 4th street near G Street southeast, formerly known as the Fourth Street Church, are now actively pre- paring for the erection of their new church, which will be located on the corner of 5th and C streets southeast. The board of trustees will act as the building committee, and Mr. William J. Palmer is the architect. It is thought that the church may be begun within a month. Rev. M. F. B. Rice is the pastor of the church. At the Western Presbyterian Church on Jast Monday night the pastor, Rev. Howard Wilbur Ernis, threw upon a screen and de- scribed the wonders of the Yellowstone Park, together with scenes along the Colo- rado river and among the Indians of the southwest. Mr. Ennis was assisted by Mr. Augustus R. S. Foote. Mr. Walter R. Jef- ferson pleased the audience much with a few dramatic and humorous recitations to- ‘ward the close of the evening. The first sermon since the installation of Rev, Adolos Allen ‘as co-pastor of the First Mr. A. Allen. Presbyterian Church was delivered last | Sunday evening. The new pastor has en-| tered actively upon his new duties. | The seventh anniversary of the Young Men's Christian Society of Mount Vernon | Place Church, corner of 9th and K streets northwest, was celebrated in the lecture room of the church Thursday evening. Mr. W. W. Millars presided and an interest- | ing program was carried out. Rev. Carl E. Grammer of the Theological Seminary will remain in charge of St. Paul's | Protestant Episcopal Church. in Alexandria, until the arrival of the new rector, Rev. | Mr. Phillips, in June. Last Sunday all the | old prayer books and hymnals of the church | ‘were called in and will be distributed among the poorer churches of the neighborhood. | Tomorrow, after the m z service at Grace Reformed Church, r of 15th and P streets northwest, a congregational meet- | ing will be held for the election of one elder | and one deacon to serve for the ensuing | three years, from \ The following | gandidates have been placed in nomination: | For elder, Ephraim Cornmar, James B. Another Earthquake Causes Death d@ Destruction in Many Places. Greece had hardly begun to calm down after the recent earthquakes before another shock has wrought death and destruction. At 9:20 o’clock last evening, during the usual Friday Epitaphion procession in the cathedral at Athens, a violent shock oc- curred that seemingly shook the building to its very foundations. The duration of the shock was fifteen seconds. The cathedral was crowded with devotees, who when the shock began were on the verge of a panic. They started to make a rush for the doors, but were partly calmed by M. Tricoupis, the prime minister, who Was one of the worshipers. He se and ordered that the doors of the cathedral be thrown open.
