A game of poker came to a sudden end in a room on South &th street near Walnut yesterday afternoon by the death of one of the players, Arthur 8. Poulterer, says to- day’s Philadelphia Inquirer. The men had gathered around the table in a room on the sécond floor, and had been playing for some time. Cards had been dealt to the various players, and they had discarded. It came Poulterer’s turn to draw, and the dealer asked, in the usual monotone, “Cards?” “Three,” said Poulterer, as he held up three of his fingers, so the dealer could not mistake him. The canis were thrown to the table in front of him, and he reached over to pick them up, one at a time. As he drew the second card up a flash of excitement came into his eyes, and as he pulled in his last card those taking part in the game noticed his face paled so perceptibly that one of his companions remarked: “Arthur must be drawing a big hand. Eh! how is it, old boy?” . No answer came from the player, but the cards slipped out of his hand and fell to the floor. At the same moment Poulterer closed his eyes, his head fell to his breast and he toppled over to the floor lifeless. The other players rushed toward him. Some one started for a doctor, but it was useless, as the man was dead. The cards were gathered up, and it was found that the dead man had held four aces, The game had been running secretly for some time, and the players were in a quan- dary what to do. Finally it was determined to clear away all evidence of the game. Cards, chips and everything were removed, and then a policeman was summoned. Poulterer was one of thé best known men about town. Ten years ago he held the championship for skittle playing in the United States, and has never been beaten in a series of games. For years he followed the races. LADIES’ GOODS. Arrangements for the Congress of t Sonus to Convene on Monday. The arrangements for the congress and reception of the Sons of the American Revo- lution, to convene in this city on Monday, are nearly completed. Revells’ Battalion Decorated. NOTES FROM THE ARMORIES supplied arrived last week, and have been n- spected by a good many of the “sharpe” of the brigade. It has every appearance of being an irreproachably good weapon, but until the ammunition arrives and gun has been tested by some of the marks- men no one can do any more than guess as to the accuracy of the work it will do, As @ weapon it is unquestionably a long wa: ahead of the old Springfield, but as an, in- strument for those who delight to drill it will probably be voted a failure. “Carry arms” is practically impossible, because of the projecting bolt and the magazine, 60 & revision of the drill regulations will speedily be in order. The new rifie will demand much more care than was given the old one, as the bolt work and magazine. present #0 much more of surface for dust and moisture to act upon. Of course the National Guard will not be likely to get these guns until 1895, 80 there is no necessity for figuring on what will have to be done when they are issued; but it is sure that periodical and frequent inspections will be necessary to keep the rifles in first-class condition. The Bay State Will Mobilize. A mobilization of the military forces of Massachusetts is being planned for some day in October, which will take the place of the annual fall drills of the various or- Ganizations. It is proposed to gather all the troops at points in the vicinity of Bos- ton, and after executing a number of ma- reuvers in grand and minor tacties, to as; semble the forces and move upon the city from a number of sclected strategic points, with a view to its supposed capture. The naval brigade will attack the city from the < harbor, and the ff departments, as well as the signal and ambulance corps, will be called upon to do. some lively work. The new mess kits will be used on this occasion, and the men will be instructed in the best methods of preparing their food, the regula- tion ration being issued for them to pre- Fare. A number of other new ideas will be tested at this time, and the result will be watched with close interest by de- tailed officers. The experience of the mili- tia of the western part of the state at for- mer mobilizations at Boston has not been exactly of the pleasantest kind, but‘ the rovel features of this occasion will compen- sate for any discomforts endured, and in any case the western Massachusetts boys — be relied upon to render first-class ser- Crosses an@ Buttons Distributed. There was a large attendance of the mem- bers of the first separate battalion at the © Street Armory last night, the occasion being the presentation of sharpshooters’ crosses and marksmen’s buttons to those who had captured them by good work dur- ing the rifle-practice season of 1893. Maj. Revells was in command, and under his escort, Col. Clay of the second regiment, Maj. Geo. H. Harries, inspector general of rifle practice, and Capt. James B. Bell, in- spector of rifle practice for the second - ment, proceeded to the locker room, on ground floor, where Capt. A Dr. Palmer, of Biberach, Germany, has invented a con- trivance, which is said to overcome all im- perfections of the old ambulance. It is a sort of litter made in three separate parts. These parts the inventor intends to be made of aluminum, combining lightness as well durability, but they can also be made of fron, bamboo, or other suitable terial. A complete ambulance, or litter, is very quickly formed by joining three sections to- gether, for which purpose each part is pro- vided with interlocking automatic fasten- ings. On both sides are attached four rings, through which carrying poles are slipped; this being done, the new field ambulance is complete. When on the march all the cum- bersome inconvenience of the old clumsy affair is done away with. Each man takes @ part of this new ambulance on his back, carrying it with his knapsack. The poles are also divided into three sections and each part slipped into a socket when not in use. When not needed for actual nse it can be stored in a very little space, about thirty of the new ambulances not occupying more room than one of the old style. Notes. A new knapsack for the militia of Penn- sylvania has been adopted. A knapsack is ® great convenience to soldiers on ordinary duty, even in time of war, but during the rebellion the soldiers discarded them when- ever an active campaign with long marches was started. A roiled blanket, containing a change of underclothing and a few other necessaries, was thrown over the shoulders and was made to serve the purpose of a knapsack. The latter, however, is a great convenience, and may be regarded as a necessity for soldiers who are not continu- ously on the march or in line of battle for weeks at a time. Col. Clay has announced the following staff appointments: William U. Watson, sergeant major; Joseph C. Hardie, quarter- master sergeant; E. H. Van Norsdall, com- missary sergeant, and Frank C. Haines, hospital steward. Mr. Watson was re- cently sergeant major of the fourth battal- fon, Mr. Hardie comes from a soldier's fam- fly and 1s the son of the late inspector gen- eral of the army, Mr. Van Norsdall held the position of quartermaster sergeant of the fifth battalion and Mr. Haines is a drug- gist in Anacostia. Each of the appointees is wide-awake and will undoubtedly use his utmost efforts for the good of the sec- ond regiment.
