16 LAW SCHOOL DEBATERS Georgetown Wins the Third Contest With Columbian. & Large and Appreciative Audience Appiland the Speakers—Enthusias- tie Demonstration at the Close. Tt wes a noisily appreciative audience ‘which filled Metzerott’s Hall last evening on the occasion of the third joint debate be- tween the students of Columbian and Georgetown law schools. The plebeian clap | of hands, while used occasionally by the ™embers of the fair sex present, was a wecondary matter with the young lawyers on either side of the gallery, whose appre- elation of good points on their side and breaks” on the other was demonstrated by a series of yells which would have done full credit to any wild west show. The hall ‘was taxed to its utmost capacity, and short- ly after $ the police interfered to prevent ny more people from going in. Many/’stood throughout the entire three hours of the Program. A large part of the best seats on the floor were reserved for the friends of | the contestants. The gallery was diviled between the members of the two law Schools, Columbian occupying the right, } while Georgetown was té be seen upon the | feft. Huge flags of the colors of the re- Spective universities hung from the front of each delegation, and the air was kept vibrat- ing during the evening successively with the ! hoarse “hoya, hoya,” of Georgetown and | the quick “whang, bang,” of Golumbian. In | the foreground of the Columbian group sat j the members of the Marshall Chapter cf the | Phi Delta Phi Fraternity, which chapter is composed of students and alumni of Cotum- Dian. ‘The debate of the evening was upon the topic, “Resolved that the United States government should annex the Hawaiian Is- lands.” Columbian had the affirmative, and ‘was represented by Messrs. Paul T. Gads- @en, Harris Dickson and Fred. Achenbach. The men from Georgetown who spoke on the | Begative were Messrs. Danie! M. Kellogg, | Archibald M. Willett and William J. Cronin. ‘The judges, Senator M. C. Butler, Repre- sentative James B. McCreary and Gen. John Gibbon, Pere seated upon the staze with the debaters. Mr. Thomas Gresnwn, president of the Columbian University Law School Debating Society, presided. The Contest Opened. Shortly after § o'clock a selection, en- titled “Darktown Patrol,” was played by the Columbian University Banjo Club. Re- sponding to an encore, the club played “Clint McCarty.” This organization is com- Posed of Messrs. D. McDonald, C. W. Dra- per, M. B. Hall, Wright Rives, jr, Walker D. Maclean, W. W. Grier, G. L. Johnson and C. M. Baker. Mr. Gresham, the chairman, briefly wel- comed the audience on behalf of the Coium- bian University Law School, who played the part of host of the evening. His words ‘Were well chosen and well spoken. The first speaker on the affirmative, Mr. Paul T. Gadsden of South Carolina, opened by saying that the speakers on the affirma- tve had divided the subject among them- selves—that the situation of the island, the characteristics and conditions of its inhab- itants and the political questions involved in annexation would first be discussed; that the second speaker on the affirmative would review chiefly the strategic advantages of the key to the Pacitic, while the third had chosen as his central idea the commercial | advantages of the cross-roads of the P: cific. Mr. Gadsden then described the loca- tion of Hawaii with reference to this cout try, and said that annexation was logical! the only way in which to satisfactorily settle the connection between the two cour- tries. He contended that the desire existed not only on the part of the American peo- a but also on the part of the Hawaiians. le then discussed the question of whether the existing government at Hawali had a Tight to offer us the country, and spoke at some length to show that the provisional government did represent the people. Mr. D. M. Kellogg, the first speaker upon the negative, was then introduced. He re- viewed in his opening remarks the history of the acquisition of territory by the United States, and said that the present proposi- tion was without precedent in the history of the country. Never before had territory apart from the North American continent been annexed by this country, and the speaker thought that now was not the time to establish a precedent in this con- nection. He claimed that the Constitution of the United States contemplated no addi- tion to its territory such as that proposed by the affirmative. He said that the annex- ation of Hawaii would establish a prece- dent which might cesult in the annexation of many other small nations, and instead of the United States of America, we wouid be- come the United States of the whole earth. He then discussed the injustice to Hawaii of bringing her under our government with- out giving her inhabitants the full measure of American liberty. On the other hand, if we allowed Hawaii to come into the Union aS a state, it would be exceed'nzly distaste- ful to have Kanaka Senators and hiepre- sentatives taking part in the making of laws for the free people of Am=-1 ca. The speaker then questioned the desire for xn- nexation which was said to exist, and said that the annexationists of the tsland were afraid to submit the question .o a popular Vote. In concluding, he said that he thoucht that honesty and justice required that Ha- wail be allowed to -arve out her own Ces- ny as an independent natioa. The Discussion Goes On. The second speaker in the affirmative, Mr. Warris Dickson, flavored his argument with several spicy stories, and his remarks were greetel at intervals with laughter and ap- Plause. He was followed by Mr. Archibald Willett, who presented the points on the Regative side, and reached the conclusion that Hawaii should be left to continue as an independent nation under the watchfui and protecting care of this country. Mr. Fred Achenbach, the third speaker in the affirmative, reviewed the commercial growth of this country and said that three general motives have impelled us in the extension of our dominions—namely, the commercial advantages of countries near us or with re- lated interests, the elimination of foreign Influences from the western continent and the establishment of freedom and the pro- motion of Civilization. Mr. William J. Cronin, the third speaker for Georgetown’s side of the question, was mext introduced. He averred that it was the judgment of the most profound thinkers end statesmen of both hemispheres that the unparalleled success, prosperity and great ness which have crowned this country durin: its natural existence are to be attribute: Jargely to its good fortune in keeping out of international entanglements of all kinds. The proposition of Hawatian annexation Was a radical departure from the settled Policy of the nation. The debate then closed for the nega- tive in a strong summing up of all the ar- guments by Mr. D. M. Kellogg. Mr. Gads- @en. in closing for the affirmative, set out ‘to dissipate the dreams of the negative. and said that he did not see any argument in contining the United States to the limits of the North American continent, and said that the whole people and press of both countries was favorable to annexation. At the conclusion of Mr. Gadsden's speech the idses retired. and while they were formu- lating their decision the Columbian Man- dolin Club played the “Sinforosa” waltz. Georgetown Wins. The judg returned in a few minutes. and Senator Butler, speaking on their be half, announced that it was with great difficulty that they had arrived at a con- clusion. He complimented all the speakers and said that they had furnished entertain- Ment and instruction for all present, and had, moreover, done something which and his colleagues could not do, name keep everybody in his seat or nearly three hours. Concluding, he said that the fudzes had, after mature deliberation, de Cided unanimously In favor of the negative This arnouncement was the signal for a tremendous outburst of applause, and in a few minutes the Georgetown boys had their Fepresentatives out on the street, treating them to free rides on their shoulders. This debate closes the series of three, a! of which have been won by Georgetown The Columbian boys are not disheartene by their failure to score a victory thus far but are going to make a strenuous effort next winter to turn the course of the result in an opposite direction.
