13 ee THE EVENING STAR, TUESDAY, APRIL 10, 1894—TWELVE PAGES, BLIZZARD IN NEW ENGLAND. Wrecks on the Const C: Gale. A fierce northeast gale, accompanied by a Diinding snow storm, has prevailed along the New England coast for the last twenty- four hours. Many reports of marine disas- ters, in one of which six lives were lost, have come in. The shipwreck which caused the loss of #ix lives occurred off Cape Cod. The bark Beimont of Boston, with sugar, from Trini- dad, went ashore on Peaked Hill bars. So used by th high were the wind and sea and so terrible | the sand bars that in thirty minutes the bark was a wreck and fast breaking to pieces. Three crews of life savers soon reached the beach opposite the wreck. Just then @ gfeat comber caught the craft under her counter and swung her broadside to the @ea. Her crew were seen to rush wildly in- to the mizzen riggifig. They had barely gained a foothold when, with a crash, ail three of her masis went by the board, and ‘m half an hour she was a mass of splinter- ed wreckage. in the meantime the life savers had Jaunched their boat and were battling against the surf in their efforts to reacn the drowning sailors. Only, three out of the enure ship's company of nine reached the shore alive, and Wuey were rescued from a piece of wreckage by the life savers. The Bames of tie rescued men are Benjamin Olsen, Peter Turner and John Stewart. ‘The schooner Nellie was wrecked Sunday might at Granite cove, on Cape Ann. Sne belonged in Thomaston, Me., and was bound trom Port Johnson to Salisbury, with | @ load of coal. all saved themselves by Selves trom the davits. ‘The vessel Is a to- tal loss. The schooner Henry D. May of Milford, Dei, is a wreck at Lanesviile. She was lyimg at the wharf of the Lanesville Gran- ite Company, from which she broke away and went ashore on the rocks. Not much uneasiness was felt for her at first, but now it is said that she will be a total loss. Nantasket Beach, Mas reported that the three-masted schooner Mary A. Hood Went ashore at Strawberry Hill Sunday evening and will be a total loss. The ves- sel, with Capt. F. W. Corson and a crew of six men, was bound from Philadelphia to Bath, Me., with a cargo of water pipe con- Signed to the Bath water works. She left Vineyard sound Saturday afternoon, and was making good progress until she ran into the April blizzard raging for the past ‘twenty-four hours. She struck the storm et 3 o'clock Sunday morning off Highland light, and Capt. Corson tried to make Bos- ton light. The heavy weather, however, baifled his attempt. The crew were finally rescued by a lifeboat. Portiand, Me., reports the harbor full of shipping. mostly coasters, which have put in om account of the storm. The vessels in the harbor number more than one hundred. A dispatch from Rockland, Me., says: Schooner David Osier went ashore at the hhead of the bay this morning and drifted ‘upon the wreck of the Jennie Chenie. She ‘was towed off at high water by a tug. A dispatch from Newburyport, Mass., Says: Capt. Stevens, keeper of the life sav- ing station at Knobbs Beach. at the lower end of Plum Island, reports that the four- ™asted schooner Mabel Jordan of Thomas- ton, Me., is at anchor In a dangerous posi- tion near the heavy breakers, about half a Wile south of the station, with her flag set for assistance. If her anchors drag the vessel will be driven on the beach. The members of the crew men are on the beach to render immediate | assistance if needed. A Fire Island, N. Y., dispatch says: The tkree-masted schooner Benjamin 8. « hurch, Capt. Allen, from Philadelphia Fall River, coal laden, which went ashore on the outer bar off the Mecox life saving station at 10:30 oclock Sunday night, has gone to Pieces. One of the greatest storms of the winter Yaged at Halifax ail Sunday night. There was a violent easterly gale and heavy fall of snow, and although the wind died out Yesterday, it still snowing hard. Tram ear service is demoralized and street traffic much impeded. i Dispatches from various points in Nova Seotia and New Brunswick show the storm to have been general in the provinces, and especially severe in Cape Breton. Much congern is felt for the steamer Wor- cester, which left Boston Saturday, and which should have reached Halifax at 6 o'clock yesterday morning. Up to noon nothing had been heard of her. ‘The worst snow storm of the season is Prevailing throughout New Brunswick. ‘There ts already about a foot of snow on the streets of St. John. Trains are delayed and the electric cars have stopped run- ning. ———_—-+0-— JAPANESE AT HAWAII Whey Demand the Richt of Suffrage on the Islands. ‘The Japanese question is the all-absorbing topic of interest «t Honolulu, according to advices up to March 31. Since the arrival of the new Japanese warship, the Takichtho, the Japanese have taken on a more inde- pendent air than formerly, and are cpenly claiming the right to a voice in the affairs of government.
