Her Successful Appeal to the Secre- tary of War When the Homestead Was to Be Destroyed. The death of Mrs. Mary J. Faulkner on Tuesday last, in Winchester, Va., recalls to mind a dramatic episode of the late war, in vhich she was the chief participant, and which has been neglected generally by the historians of that stormy epoch. Mrs. Faulkner was the widow of the late Charles J. Faulkner, who was minister to France during the administration of President Buchsran, and the mother of Senator Faulkner of West Virginia. After her mar- riage she and her husband lived at the magnificent homestead of her family in Martirsburg, then in old Virginia, but now a city of the new state. It was a house such as one seldom sees, even in the south, which abounds so freely in solid, massive architecture of a most comfortable style. The reoms were large, the ceilings high and most of the walls were three feet in thickness. The house was filled with treas- | ures, curiosities picked u@abroad, bits of china and virtu, dainty bric-a-brac from European marts, costly paintings from con- tinental galleries and delicate fabrics from oriental looms. Such a collection is not often seen in private houses in this coun- try. The house was surrounded, too, by a glorious park, a lawn of several acres in extent, covered with soft, thick grass and studded with the remnants of a virgin for- est. It was almost an earthly paradise. Not alone was the home valuable as a property, but it was dear for its memories, its asso- ciations, as well as its unreplaceable con- tents. Such was the home that Minister Faulkner left when he went to his post at Paris, where he used his efforts in ald of the southern cause so openly t upon the inauguration of President Lincoln the min- ister was recalled und arrested upon his return. He was represented at his home by his son, then a lad of fourteen, who had been with him in Eurcpe, and who went to Martinsburg at once. But the sounds of war drew the lad off to the front, and he joined the cadets of the Virginia Military Institute. Thus the stately mansion was left in the care of a woman and her daughters, a woman of great courage and wonderful spirit, who has recently been known to the people of Washington as a graceful and win- ning participant iv several social functions. For a time all went well, though the tides of the warfare swept past the household, back and forth with varying currents. There was peace within these massive walls in peculiar distinction to the strife raging so near at hand. Ret tion. It was in the summer of 1864 that the serenity of the Faulkner home was seri- ously disturbed. Some time before there had been great indignation aroused among the people of the north by the action of the confederate forces in burning the house o: Gov. Bradford in Maryland, and Gen. Davis S. Hunter, commanding the federal forces} cter. ? fs rly! fodine g 5 To Prepare for a Confingration. “Madam,” said Capt. Martindale, his horse before the porch and doffing his cap, “I am under the painful necessity of communicating to you the orders of my Superior officer that your house shall be burned today. I am permitted to give you one hour for preparation. You shall be al- lowed to take from the house the wi apperel of yourself and daughters, but nothing clse. All but these articles must be left behind to be burned.” Prepared though she was for the shock, the news that her beautiful home and its invaluable furnishings and ornaments were to be sacrificed to the torch came upon the lady with appalling force. Without a man of her own kin to advise her, she was at first at a loss to know what course to sue. She realized that unless aid could be | summoned the orders must be carried out and that her home would the next day lie smoking and ruined. Soldiers of her own cause were far away. Even were they at hand it was doubtful if they could succeed against the great odds opposed to them in a fight for the preservation of this great 'y- ca needful assistance must come | from another source. It must come from @ | Source higher than the general |the forces in the neighborhood. It m |come from the Secretary of War or even | from the President himself. Mrs. Faulkner thought over the situation for only a few moments, but they seemed like ages, with the seconds eating into the hour that stood | between her home and its fate. Then act~ ing upon an inspiration she sent for a trusty servant, ordered him to mount the best horse on the place and while he was in this she wrote on a scrap of a brief but effective appeal to Secre- tary Stanton. d Appeal to the Secretary of War. She had known Mr. Staaton in former years, and felt that perhaps she could pere suade him at least to stay the execution of the order until she might appeal in 04 son to Gen. Hunter. The message written, and the rider dashed at top speed toward the telegraph office at Mar+ tinsburg. The electric current was to take her appeal to Washington and to bring back the reply, if reply should be vouch- safed, in less than fifty-five minutes. There ‘was not a momert to be lost. The soldiers lounging by the roadside at the gate the shade of the great trees looked in der at the man dashing down the road, surmising his errand, made bets for against the success of his mission. the hoof beats died away, the dust that he had raised blew off into the fields, the bot sun beat down, and all was still egaim. Capt. Martindale and his men at the house dismounted and sat upon the porch. Mrs, Faulkner and her daughters, scarce daring to hope for success, busied themselves in packing a few trunks, while the frightened \servants ran hither and thither, wailing and weeping. The minutes sped. Ten, twenty, thirty Were gone. Still no sign of the messenger. The women at the house had lost all hope, land one of the daughters urged the captain to give them a little more time. “J am very sorry, malam,” he said, “but | I have no authority to grant a single min- ute beyond the hour. 1 have no taste for | my errand, I assure you, but 1 must obey | orders. | Forty-five minutes were past and the roa@ | was still as death. The messenger had | been descried at the top of a hill a quarter pink-| of a mile away, and, fearful thet he was j late, he lashed his horse to a furious pace, and above his head he waved a paper. In- fected with the spirit of the driver's en- thusiasm, the federal soldiers cheered him on, ard he passed them swii into the gate they forgot their parts and bade him speed. The clock lacked just five minutes of the hour when, with his horse fairly blown, the messenger drew up in front of the porch. He did not need to descend from the saddle, for the captain had sprung from his seat on the porch, and with gt took the paper from the rider and ly passed it up to Mrs. Faulkner, who, with tears in her eyes, stcod eagerly await the news from Washington. So agitat was she that she could hardly open the envelope in which the telegram was in- closed, but when at last she unfolded the paper she read aloud. follows: “The property of Charles James Faulkner is exempt from the order of Gen.
