Another of those who have been helping to sustain the policy business in the West End was tripped up yesterday. Officer Bradley was the tripper, and the George- town end of the Aqueduct bridge the place of tripping. William Walker was the party jugged. William, like nine-tenths of policy’s promoters, is colored. His arrest makes the second this week for the same offense. | Sufficient evidence to convict the “ellow bas | been secured. The crusade agaist the olicy men has now begun in carnest. All own to have been connected with the business when it flourished two years ago, together with many suspects, are be- ing closely watched. All passengers across the Aqueduct, unless they are known to be bona fide residents of Virginia, are looked upon with suspicion. There is a strong movement on foot, ap- parently, to revive policy to the fullest ex-| tent. This time, though, the game's sup- porters will ha’ uphill work. A policy prisoner at the station is looked upon as an important one, and as all policemen are working for reputations and promotion, they | will exhbbit no delicacy in regard to making arrests. Canal Claims. The Chesapeake and Ohio canal claim bill, under which the state of Maryland waives the priority of the state’s mortgages in favor of the claims made for labor per- formed between 1887 and 1889, the claims Not to exceed $70,000, was yesterday report- ed favorably upon by the finance committee of the Maryland legislature, and referred back to the state serate. The Sloan amend- meat, under which oid judgments amount- Ing to $100,000 would be paid, was omitted in the bill. The state of Maryland has about $2,000,000 Interest tn the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, and the United States about one-half that amount. In the man- agement of the canal Maryland has always acted as a stockholier and not as a state. Notes, On next Monday night at 8 o'clock Mr. Harrie Webster, chief engineer, U. S. navy, will lecture before Gecrge N. Morris Post, G. A. R., at Stahlrran’s Hall on the Sa- moan disaster of several years ago, in which he figured prcminently, At Grace Church tomorrow there will be Easter services at 7.30, 11:30 and 4:30, and in the evening at 7:36 the Sunday school | will held their regular Easter celebration. Great interest is being taken in the meet- ings at the Central Union Mission Hall on accomplished. Rev. Geo. Elliot, late pastor of the Dum- barton Avenue Church, is improving. a By special request of the order of Recha- bites, Rev. W. C. Alexander, D.D., will preach a scrmon on Sunday evening at 7:30 in the West Stre2t Presbyterian Church. pues NEW YORK’S MURDER MYSTERY. Evidence Discovered in Regard to the Killing of Miss Fuller. Deputy Coroner O'Hare of New York has filed the report of his autopsy on Miss Ful- ler, whose shooting last Saturday, it is now almost certain, was a murder. The report states that the brain was full of blood, showing that the girl must have lived some time after she was shot. Dr. O'Hare was not, however, willing to com- mit himself definitely as to ch duration of life after the fatal shot was fired. Detectives McCluskey and ‘Titus Giseov- ered yesterday afternoon that the towel which was over the wash basin in Lawyer Mullen’s office on Saturday afternvon ts missing. Police Capt. Stevin has received a letter from a man who claims to have been an eye-witness of the shooting. The individ- ual’s name is withheld for the present. The police certainly expect to convict Magee of the murder of Miss Fuller. They expect to show that Mullen’s managing clerk continually pestered the young iype- writer with his attentions; that he was wildly in love with her and wanted her to marry him; that she repeatedly refused to marry him, knowing, as she did, that he was a divorced man; thst on more than one occasion Magee sought to coerce her into an agreement with his wishes, and that she resisted him until the wear and tear upon her begot-a chronic nervousness and hysteria, and an almost insane detes- tation of the man. : <i F. L. Taylor, the Cornell student, in prison for contempt of court in the chlorine poison- ing case, failed to “st svt op a writ of habeas corpus. the official boards of the churches in this city | in endeavoring to secure the restoration of Dr. Naylor ts not strange. Growing out of Methodist church polity and the varied in- terests under its fostering care, there will | always be found some who, by reason of | their position and close relations to the | | higher authorities, will refrain from active | | Participation in any movement looking to the abridging of power or questioning the | motives that may actuate those who, by virtue of their office, use their prerogative | to the injury of the church or to the over- |turning of plans, however helpful and pro- | motive of good. So in this movement there are doubtless those who deprecate any ef- fort to right a wrong or seek to ascertain | the motives that could induce the displace- men. of an official whose integrity is un- | Questioned and whore life work stands out conspicuous for the uplifting of every cause | that the church has under its control. ‘There seems to be a widespread opirion | | among the ministry as well as the laymen that there was a motive in the removal of Dr. Neylor back of any reasons yet made known. The giving of another six years’ service to one of the Baltimore elders, mak- jing his term a possible twelve years, in- dicates the biased action of he presiding bishop, which can oniy be explained on the | hypothesis of some motive of which the church is still In ignorance. Bishop Hurst's Duty. | If, as it is asserted, Bishop Hurst has | stated that he was neither consulted, nor j aia he approve of the action of Bishop Fowler, then these protests should not only | be pressed, but Bishop Hurst should esteem | jit a privilege as well as bis duty to aid in | | the undoing of an admitted wrong, and 4o | | what he can tc allay the apprehensive teel- \ing now agitating che minds of the Meth- odists within the bounds of his official sta- | tion. | | It ts stated by the promoters of this | movement that the efforts now being made | are not because Dr. Naylor ts personally | involved, but upon a broader plane of re- | | Sentiment to the position taken by a bishop | | who exercises his power to humiliate the | occupant of a high office, and bring discon- | tent into the minds and hearts of the mem- bership at large. Under the economy of the \cflurch it is the laity upon whom fall the | obligations to give of their means to carry |on the work of the episcopacy. Each | church is assessed annually for the support of the bishops, and when public sentument |Pecomes aroused against the arbi- | |trary exercise of power by the! | constituted authorities a@ feeling will 'M street, and splendid results are being | P€Come engendered that will culminate in action by the general conference in securing equal representation, where the voice of the | laity can be heard, and where power to bring harm upon the church will be great | restricted.” od | ——_—. A PAINTER’S FALL. He Was Badly Injured, but the Doc- tors Think He Will Recover. | An accident that almost resulted in death | occurred this morning. James Goldsborough, a white man, aged forty-five years, and a/ painter by trade, was at work on the third- | story of a house, located on East Capitol | | street between 24 and 3d streets. About |W o'clock the scaffclding suddenly gave way and Goldsborough was hurled to the ground. When picked up the painter was found to be still alive, although the by-standers expected to see a mangled corpse. At the Emergency Hospital, where he was re- moved immediately, a fractured left thigh, @ couple of scalp wounds, a sprained wrist | and innumerable bruises on the body and limbs were discovered. The hospital staff | worked over the injured man for two hours, | after which he was taken to Providence Hospital. Although seriously injured, the physicians are of the opinion that Golds- borough will recover. His home ts at No. $01 M street southeast. aE The Big Tree in Place.
