Back of many a small newspaper para- graph there lies a piece of romance that is unsuspected. This was shown well in the case of an item that was printed in The Star last Monday evening, stating that an unknown colored woman, neatly dressed, had been found dead at the corner of 4th and P streets. That was all. Just another unknown dead; @ common story in every large city. She was taken to the morgue to await identifi- cation. A man, lonesome and worried, awaited the return of his wife. She never came, The story is a simple one, but it was none the less affecting. Sunday night during the heavy storm that prevailed in this city an elderly col- ored woman, the cook in a house in the northwestern section of the city, started to go to her home to see her husband. She was advised not to go, as it was raining hard, and her walk was a long one, but she said her old man would miss her if she did not come, and she would take her chances. She plunged out into the rain, and struggled along block after block. Sud- denly she was taken with a feeling of sick- ness, and was likely to faint. She asked assistance from & lady who was passing by, and the latter helped her along until she, too, became exhausted, and asked the ald of an old colored man. The old man leaned over toward the sick woman to assist her, and she fell into his arms. It was evident that she was dying, and after doing what he could to relieve her the old man left to telephone for an ambulance. When he _ returned the old woman, whose face he had not seen in the darkness, was dead, and there was noth- ing more for him to do. He went home to await there the coming of his own wife. Thinking of the poor old woman whom he bad rendered assistance it seemed to him that he had not done ali that he might, and the old darkey fell on his knees and prayed long and earnestly. Still his wife did not come, and he began to think that she had decided not to venture out into the storm to leave her place of service. She never did come. She was dead. She had died in his arms, although he did not know it at the time. She recognized him, though she could not speak. Even in death this old colored couple were together after a long life spent by each other's side. This is a true story. —___ Death of Mrs. J. C. McGuire. Mrs. Dr. J. C. McGuire died this morning about 7 o’clock at her residence, 1527 16th street. She had been ill several weeks and for the past week had been lying at the point of death, and no hopes were en- tertained of her recovery. Mrs. McGuire had many lovely traits of character and will be sincerely mourned by a large circle of friends. She leaves but one child, little girl of eight years of age. Dr. Mc- Guire has the sympathy of @ hast of friends. ‘Andrew will | school, 0:45 a.m. hile lane, 10 | — INDEX TO ADVERTISEMENTS. FINANCIAL. nz's| American Security *| And Trust Co. The Washington Player Must Accept Service im the Suit Against Him. A motion was heard in common pleas court, No. 3, Philadelphia, to quash the capias issued in the case of Wm. Wright against John Stricker, known in the base ball world as “Cub” Stricker of the Wash- ington club. On the 5th of last August Wright, who re- sides in Philadelphia, went to the Phila- delphia Base Ball Park at Broad and Huntingdon streets, to see the game be- tween the Philadelphia and Washington clubs. Upon paying his admission he took his stand at the low fence separating the spectators from the field. Stricker, the defendant, was playing for the Washington nine, and during the pro- gress of the game caught the ball and threw the ball at the fence in front of the Spectators opposite the right field, who|p, were “guying” him and the other Wash- ington players. The bail bounded over the bone of his nose and infiicting H other injuries. When the suit was begun about ten days ago, an ese a eee an for a capias ag Stricker’s arrest. In view of these facts, the court quashed the capias, but decided that the defendant should be allowed no costs for depositions, etc. and that Stricker’s counsel should accept service of the writs in the sult on behalf of the defendant. —————+e+______ Cremated im Baltimore.
