Wednesday, the twenty-third annual meeting of the Philadelphia branch of the Womans’ Board of Missions took place, and on the day following the second annual meeting of the Womans’ Home Mis- sionary Union of the New Jersey Associa- | tion occurred in the First Congregational Church of that city. About fifty churches were represented. Miss Fanny M. Whit- comb, a teacher in Howard University, read an interesting paper regarding the Indians and negroes, and the discussion by Mrs. C. H. Small, the wife ot the pastor ef the Mount Pleasant Congregational Church here. The delegates from this city were Mrs. Catlin and Mrs. Clark from the Foreign Missionary Society, Mrs. Davis and Misses | Cook and Julia Pond from the Mission Cir- cle, and Mrs. Newman and Mrs. J. B. John- son from the Home Missionary Society of the First Congregational Church, and Mrs. C. H. Small from the Mount Pleasant Church. Sometime in December the members of the E Street Baptist Church will hold their an- Bual church meeting. It will be an event pf some consequence, as the matter of com- mencing the building of their new church will come up for discussion. It will be re- membered that the congregation has pur- chased 10,060 feet of land at three dollars a foot, at the corner of 10th and N streets. ‘The plans for the new church are completed. It will be entirely on one floor—the auditori- um, Sunday school room, study, parlors and ell—and the people are only waiting the sale of their old property before commencing the work. ‘i The evening sessions at the Central Union Mission this week have drawn consider- ably, and have been addressed by such of our pastors as Hugh Johnston of the Metro- litan M. E. Church, R. H. McKim of piphany, J. T. Kelly, Fourth Presbyterian; George O. Little, Assembly Presbyterian; S. Domer, St. Paul's English Lutheran; George Elliot, Dumbarton M. E. Church; E. S. Todd, Hamline M. E.; J. J. Muir, E Street Baptist; Prof. Hudson, the evangel- ist, and others. The Ladies’ Aid Society of the First Con- gregational Church held a special meeting last Tuesday to arrange for the reception of the assistant pastor, Rev. M. Ross Fish- burn and his bride, on their return from their wedding trip. The first annual sociable of the Calvary Baptist Church took place Wednesday night. Over 350 persons were present. Dr. Greene had been slightly under the weather for the past few days and was unable to be present. A special series of evening services has been inaugurated at the Assembly Presby- terian Church. Dr. George O. Little is tak- ing up one Sunday evening every month with hymn writers and their hymns. Last Sunday Charles Wesley was taken up. The gave a sketch of his life, and all the iymns sung were his. Later on the serizs will be continued by taking up such men as Isaac Watts, William Cowper, Ray Palmer, Henry Francis Lite and others. The Catholics have had a busy and an eventful week with their receptions to Cardinal Gibbons at the Carroll Institute and Catholic University. There is talk of establishing a young men’s club and a military company in St. Paul's parish (Catholic). The foundations for the new church and concrete work are done, and already the stone cutting has commenced. The building will be of white sandstone and when completed will be one of the finest structures in that part of the city. St. Aloysius Catholic Church celebrated its anniversary last Sunday with special musical services. Dr. Power of the Vermont Avenue Chris- tian Church returned from his vacation in Virginia to preach last Sunday, but went back again to spend the week. He will be in the city again tomorrow. Dr. 8S. Domer of St. Paul’s English Lu- theran Churcb is in Chicago accompanied by his wife, and will not return for a week. Dr. Domer finished his Snday evening serv- ices on the Lutheran Church in Finland and Iceland, last Sunday. Dr. J. J. Muir of the E Street Baptist Church addressed the Young Men’s Chris- tan Association last Sunday afternoon. The opening social of the Church of the Holy City, on Dupont circle, was held last Wednesday, at 1306 Rhode Island avenue. Dr. Frank Sewail of that church has re- sumed his Sunday evening sermons on “Jesus on the Mount.” Mrs. Viles gave the Bible lesson at the consecration meeting last Wednesday morn- ing at Wesley Chapel (Methodist). R. E. Hudson, the singing evangelist, has been at the Hamiine M. E. Church this week. The Trinity P. E. Church, corner of 34 and C streets, is planning the erection of a hall for the use of the younger members and organizations. = The Mount Carmel and Berean Baptist Churches have been holding revivals during the week. A talk to young folks was given at the Calvary Parish P. E. last Sunday. The Temperance Women’s Union of the Grace M. E. Church held a special temper- ance service last Sunday. ‘The Mount Zion Baptist Church has been holding revival services this week. Rev. A. Millbanks has taken the place of the former pastor, Rev. Mr. Loving. The Ryland M. E. Church has held re- vival services all the week. The Metropolitan M. E. Church has taken on a gene mad of can oy interior changes and improvements managed by the ladies. Mrs. Dr. Sunderland is in the Catskills, and will not return for a week or so. The forty hours began at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church last Sunday, and will com- mence tomorrow at St. Joseph's. Dr. Townsend, Church of the Incarna- tion, will be back next Friday. Dr. Wilson of Wesiey M. E. Church has left for Denver, having received a message of his brother's serious illness. A census of the parish of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church is being taken. The Young People’s Union of the Church of Our Father met during the week to con- sider the winter's work.
