Paul Moy is the name of a Chinaman who thinks this city is good enough for him. He has no fears of the Geary exclusion act, for he has registered, and he intends to remain here and wash collars and cuffs until he becomes wealthy enough to return to the flowery king- dom in fine style. And while he remains here he intends to live as all good citizens do, and he does not intend to submit to violence without getting even in some way. - Saturday night he was standing in front of place of business enjoying the fresh air, when three young men came along and pro- ceeded to use him fora target. One of them struck him with au umbrella and then went on little thinking that Paul would follow him. But the almond-eyed celestial did follow him, and when complaint was made a police- man made an arrest. John — was the name given by the young man who was arrested. He charged that the assault was committed by one of his companions, but the Chinaman was sure of his man and Marphy was locked up. In Judge Miller's court this morning the Chinaman told the story of the assault and the defendant made his denial. “Is there any one here who knows the de- fendant?” asked the judge. “Idon’t believe he has given his right name,” said Policeman Brady. ‘+I don’t believe his name is Murphy.” ' “Where do you live?” the court inquired. t Fort Myer,” was his reply. “Why in the world can't you let these Chinamen alone?” “I never touched him,” Panl was recalled and he told the judge that he was not mistaken, that the prisoner was the man who hit him. : Judge Miller thought he was the guilty party and fined him $10 and cotts or 30 days in jail. ees An Attempted Burglary. About 1 o'clock this morning the house of Mr. Charles Loeffler, No. 1632 P strect, was entered, but, fortunately, the thief was fright- ened off. The thief climbed up the back porch and entered through the window, and a daugh- ter of Mr. Loeffler saw him when he entered. ‘The man seized and attempted to chloroform her, but her screams aroused her father, and on his approuch the thief, who is described asa white man of twenty-five or thirty years, made good his escape, although Mr. Loeffler fired two or three shots at him. Miss Loefiler believes that she would know the man. This is the second attempt at Mr. Loefiler’s house. ee ge Chapel Point and Colonial Beach. ‘The Harry Randall will leave tomorrow at 7a. m. for the various river landings. Howe of University Heights, who took the part of “Josophinc” in the performance of “Pinafore” on Saturday afternoon for the benefit of the Homeopathic Hospital, and the many friends of the little lady from Brookland and the heights who at- tended the matinee were more than gratified by the absolutely fauitiess manzer in which she carried her part from beginning to end of the pleasing opera. ‘The costames worn b the young prima donna were charming in ric! simplicity ‘The Sunday Methodist meeting was largely attended at the residence of Mr. N. B. Malone, and the speaker, Mr. P. A. Crist, gave an carn- est and impressive discourse. The weekly Beazer meetings will hereafter be held on ednesday evenings, and this week will be at the home of Mr. I'S. Hollidge. Miss Jennie Bartiey introduced the wax figures with quaint effect, and Miss Fannie Anderson acted as accompanist to the chorus. The novelty feature of the perform- ance was the club swinging of Miss Fannie E. Johnston, Miss Mamie Swengle and Master Raymond Riordan.
