Ss THE UNITY OF CHORCHES. A Discussion in Which Dr, Holli- field Made a Sensation. ATTACKING THE EPISCOPAL CHORCH. Dr. Booth Utters an Earnest Protest Against the Assault. There was a let up in the course of the | Briggs trial today. On Monday, however, the | caxe will be resumed once more, and then there Will be no let up until the case has been carried on to its bad, whutever that may be. The general assembly, as has been noted in the columns of Tux Stan before, sits in a dual capacity, It is both a legislative and a judicial body, but not at the same time. It may adjourn as one and at once proceed to business as the other. This | was just what hanpened this morning, and this | was why Dr. Briggs and the others who are most directly connected with the case had a day of comparative rest today. Yesterday afterncon’s session of the high court closed with a rather sensational scene DR, ROBERTS AS MODERATOR. when Dr. Briggs demanded to. be heard to re- fate statements made by the Rev, Dr. Dufiield | 8° utterances, Dr, | ard and there was a | of Princeton as to Dr. Ii Brigge insisted on being he moment of disorder, but the moderator finally succeeded in inducing the appellee to take his seat and make known his complaints through the mouth of the moderator. When the assembly in its judicial eapacity adjourned yesterday afternoon it was with the | understanding that the judicial committee would confer over night and be prepared to present this morning a report that would in- clude a plan of procedure to follow in the trial of Prof. Briggs. This morning directly after the religions ex- ercises with which the proceedings of the day were commenced Dr. Baker, the chairman of the judicial committec, was given the platform to read the report of his committee, He stated that notwithetanding the fact that the matter had received the fullest and most diligent atten- tion from the committee they had yet been unable to complete all the necessary prelim- inaries and he would recommend tbe adjourn- ment cf the Briggs trial until next Monday morning. Then they could go ahead with the trial morning, afternoon and evening until it | should be finally disposed of. Dr. Baker said that by this postponement of the trial the assembly would really lose no time, for in the natural order of affaits the first busi- ness would be the reading of the record of the trial from its inception down to the present time. This reading would occupy at least a day, put he was pleased to eay that tere has been an agreement reached between the appellants and the appellee by which tho reading of the record would be dispensed with. DR. YOUNG. This would really save @ day which could be Profitably utilized by the assembly in trans acting other matters of important busines: that must receive attention before adjcurnment§} two sides in presenting their cares. Dr. Baker admitted that this was trae, that the committee had not had sufficient time to settle this important matter satisfactorily. On Monday morning, however, the committee IN THE GALLERY, would make a full report, in which this matter would receive proper attention. ‘Then, on mo- tion, the report of the commt ted and the assembly, in its and then cat again as a iF. Notwithstanding the fact that the morning session was devoted to routine business there was one little breeze that came very near grow- ing into a well-developed storm. ‘Tt was in the form of #n attack upon a sister denomination by a commis: The trouble came from an entirely une: pected socree andat time when no one was looking for any such outbreak. It followed directly upon the reading of the report of the committee on church unity. Pleasant refer- ences had been made to other churches which bad shown their desire to co-operate with the Presbyterian Church on the basis of @ common faith and order. The report touched particularly upon the attitude taken by the Protestant Episcopal Cuurch, which hnd evidenced a decided willing hess to meet the Presbyterian Chureb upon common grounds. ‘Then the trouble came. The Court of Claims has rendered two im- portant decisions in the cases of Joseph C. Danicls, jr., and M. B, Wellborn against the United States and the Creek Nation. These two cases were argued by Assistant Attorney General Colby on behalf of the government and Indians and by Messrs, Vale, Earl and Pugh for the claimants, and were submitted as test cases. ‘They involved in themselves only about $8,000 or £10.00, but indirectly affect the set- Uement of 1,003 claims $1,257,000 for Indian ‘depredations arising out of ‘the Creek war. The court found for the govern- ment and Indians in all materiel points. The case will probably be ap) to the United States Supreme Court. ‘The claims are mostly those of citizens of Georgia and Alabama. LITTLE PURSUIT OF PINKNEY. - News Received That the Murderer Had Been Seen This Morning. Special Dispatch to The Evening Star. Maxtnono’, Mv., May 27.—William Pinkney one of the colored condemned murderers of Mr. Francis M. Bowie, who escaped from the joil here last Thursday morning, is still at large, although it is generally concoded that the man is hiding within comparatively few miles of this place. ‘The last seen of the man was about 8 o'clocls of the evening of the day he escaped, when be ‘appeared at the wood pile of Mr. Cornelius Dooley. about six miles south of here, and knocked off the iron shackles about his ankle, Mr. Dooley, hearing the noise, went out of hie house and within # short distance of him recoge nized Pinkney, but, being unarmed, did not at tempt to arrest him. Mr. Davall’s |farm is but a short distance from that of Mr. Dooley and it is not doubted that the murderer's brother was about to furnish him with the so far as it is known Pinkney is not in posses- sion of a weapon of any kind, but it is beheved that he will be furnished with one by the negroes who are supposed to have supplied him with food since his escape. That many of the negroes wiil do all they possibly can to assist ‘one of the men who made way with Mr. Bowie, a man they particularly disliked is doubted by noone here. ‘0 ORGANIZED EFFORT TO CAPTURE HIM. Because of their assistance, and because of Pinkney’s perfect familiarity with every foot | should a ‘determined effort be made, | therefore be to remain in the swamp in | he is now of ground in this part of the state, his recap- ture is made all the more difficult. It is very evident, too. that the smallness of the reward offered for his recapture, €250, accounts, ine | Segut degree, for his stil remaining at large, escaped murderer is not only « dos perate man, but he is a most powerfal and, with death by hanging siaring him inthe face, it is acknowledged that he will [resist recapture with all the jtion of an alresdy doomed aman. So it as that ms yet no really organized effort for the murderer's recapture bas been although Sheriff Middleton is doing all he cibly can to retake him. Should the reward be increased to £500 or £1,000 there is no doubt that a determined and thoroughly effort would be at once made for the recapture of Pinkney, but until the reward is substantially increased it is openly «tated there that no real earnest effort will be made to retake bim. It seems to be the general behef bere that | violence will be used against Pinkney unless should himself attempt violence when located, Ofcourse while those now after him and ‘those who may give him little opportunity to do them barm, still should he submit to recapture when overtakem it is believed that there will be no attempt & |Isneb him This belief is bused on the ground | that the man already stands convicted of the | crime alleged against him and the day of his ‘execution bas been named—the 30th of next month—it would be best to allow the law te tuke its course.
