It is one of Strauss’ happiest concep- tons and deals with carnival time in Venice. The costuming is adapted to the bright color- ings of the holiday season and the scenery is set with the idea of presenting the festivities of such an occasion. The experiences of an adventuresome duke form the basis of the plot. ‘The cast enlists the services of every member of the company in parts that are all good.
