Mr. Coudert’s Interesting Argument Before Bering Sea Tribunal. Panis, May 5.—Mr. F. R. Coudert of counsel for the United States covtinued his argument before the Bering sea tribunal of arbitration today. Mr. Condert read from the American case to show the habits of the seals; that if = mother seal was killed ber pup must inevit a only their own pups. The portion of the American case read by . Coudert ‘also showed that necessarily, after a few jdays of nursing ber pup. the cow is compelled to seek food in order to provide suf- fictent nourishment for her offepring: that «be leaves the pup on the rockery and goes into the sea, these excursions lengthening as the pup gets alder, The portion readalso showed that fich were very scarce in the waters ad- joining the rookerics, and this necessitated the cow going many miles in search of her food, and that they undoubtedly go from 100 to 200 miles from the rookeries on these feeding excursions, a fact borne out by the testimony of many experienced sealers. Mr. Condert went on to say that since the ‘nursing mothers traveled this distance seaward to seck food, returning after obtaining the food, it was dificult to speak patiently of the Britich proposal that a twenty-mile limit would be sufficient for the protection of the female wealn. Mr. Coudert next read and discnssed that portion of :be American case relating to the | methods emploved in taking the seals at the Pribyloff Isiausls and the results of these prac- tices upon the berd.
