Secretary Carlisle unqualifiedly denied to a Stax reporter today the published statement that he contemplated another trip to New York to confer with the bankers there on the gold situation. The gold reserve, according to the figures on | the treasury books, is €97,401,000. This in- | cludes, as far as can be accurately ascertained, all the gold offered and accepted within ti past ten days, exeept about three-quarters of a | million dollars, thus leaving the reserve | invaded about’ 2,000,000. This has been occasioned by the’ quict withdrawal of gold from the New York and Boston subtreasuri for rhipment to Canada, and by the further fact that $1,000,000, promised from the west, was at the last moment withdrawn, ‘An official statement of the gold in the treasury made to Secretary Carlisle for use at the cabinet meeting yesterday afternoon show: gold in the treasury, 97,401.000; gold in transit, $556,000; total, $97,957,000 } | wood bush and loped leisurely across the lawn. TWO CENTS. AT THE WHITE HOUSE, Omce Seekers Try to Get = Rabbit Foot, But Failed, THOSE WHO SAW MR. CLEVELAND AND WHAT SOME OF THEM WANTED—THE CANDIDATES FOR RECORDER OF DEEDS AND PUBLIC PRINTER, —A UNIQUE APPLICATION To MR. THURBER, There was a lively ecramble tor a rabbit foot | in the White House grounds this morning. The luck attached to the left hind foot of a grave- yard rabbit killed in the dark of the moon is | proverbial, but undonbtedly it would be eclipsed by the tuck inherent ina rabbit born and bred in the very shadow of the White House and in the atmosphere of “Grover Cleveland Inck.” At least this appeared to be the views of a party of office seekers who came to call on the President this morning. They were coming up the walk from the enst gate, and when just abreast of a gardener who was mowing the lawn a young rabbit darted from beneath a box- STARTED FOR THE RADEIT. With one accord the office seekers dropped canes and umbrellas and gave chase. They wanted a hind foot of a White House rabbit. The rabbit shook out a few reefs and quickened his pace. The office seekers crowded on more canvas and seemed to be gaining. But “‘a stern chase is chase,” as the sailors say, and with the wind on his beam the rabbit paid off rapidiy before the spanking breeze. ‘The pursuers bad a broader spread of can- vas, however, and were coming up, hand over hand, when the rabbit luffed and’ started off on another tack. There he bad ‘em. His pur- suers being brond in the beam and bluff in the bows couldn't wear ship as easily as the jaunty little cotton-tail, and by the time they came into the wind tne rabbit had fil standing away on the other hull down in the grass, ‘That settled it. Tho pursuers came to and paused until they could regain en breath to climb the White House stairs. THE RECORDERSHIP OF DEEDS. ‘The District recordership of deeds was under discussion this morning for a brief time. Sena- tor Martin of Kansas spoke to the President about Mr. Taylor of Kansas City, whose can- didacy has been mentioned heretofore, and Representative O'Neill of Massachusetts filed the application of E. G. Walker, a colored man from Boston, for the position, It is Jearned that the President has not de- cided the recordership question yet. He bas not made up his mind whether be will select an outsider or pursue « home rule , and i ually uncertain whether he white man or give the place to a colored man. It is said that he desires to recognize colored men and to aid the advancement of the race in any way that he can, TRE PUBLIC PRINTER QUESTION. The President has not yet selected « public printer to succeed Mr. Palmer, whose term will soon expire, To every one who has broached the subject recently the President has replied that he is not ready to take the matter up at this time. There are so many applications on file for this office that it will be considerable of an undertaking to sift them down unless the President does, as has been intimated he may do, select a man of his own choosing regardless of political indorsements. The President wants a reform in the govern- ment printing office, and will appoint aman who understands his’ wishes and is in accord with them. CHARGES OF OFFENSIVE PARTISANSEIP. Charges of offensive partisanship against federal office holders aarp to be coming in feom every quarter. Congressmen say that this scemn to be the only way to get some of the republicans out, and vacancies they must bave. In this condition the President must have been relieved to find that there is one district where the republican incumbents cannot be arraigned. This is Mr. Outhwaite's district in Ohio. He called at the White House today and in conversation remarked that the federal officials at Columbus cannot be ousted by bringing charges against them, for they not only abstained from undue pai tion in polities, but they are ali good men and made efficient officials. MR. HARRITY'S RIGHT-HAND MAX, ‘Mr. Hensel, attorney general of Pennsylvania, called on the President this morning. Mr. Hensel is Mr. Harrity’s right-hand man, and just at present there is a contest over the United States attorneyship of the western district of Pennsylvania, in which Mr. Harrity is very much interested. A factional fight among the democrats is said to be brewing over this pomtment, as Mr. Guffey of western Pennsyl- vania, a party leader in that section, has a can- didate for the place also. Mr. Harrity is in- dorsing State Senator Harry Hall and Mr. Guffey is suid to favor Mr. Frank P. Iams. Congressman Enloe called with Col. D. M. Wisdom of Muscogee, 1. 'T,, who wants to be the Five Civilized Tribes in the Indian Territory. Mr. Enloe and Col. Wisdom formerly ran a newspaper together down in Tennessee, “Wisdom was great on obituary poetry,” «aid Mr. Enloe, “Why, sir, that man could write an obituary notice that would almost bring tears to the eyes of the corpse.” A UNIQUE APPLICATION FOR OFFICE. Private Secretary Thurber has received a ‘unique application for an office by aman out im Michigan. The man lives near the farmer who pastures Mr. Thurber's horses during the summer. and he has written Mr. Thurber a flowing account of the present condition of the ax mare, the sorrel filly and the colt with a white star in his forehead, closing with a mod- est application for an appointment. Congressman Tucker has presented the ap- plication of Mr. Marshall Hanger of Staunton to be consul at Bermuda. MR. MEAKIM DOES NOT TURN UP, At the White House today all knowledge of any summons to Alexander Meakim of New York city tocome here to meet the President was denied. According toa New York special ‘Mr. Meakim, one of the excise commissioners of that city, was called here to confer with the President relative to the post office appoint- ment, with the intimation that he was to be offered the place. Mr. Meakim does not ap- pear to be in the city. The text of the order instructing United States officials not to arrest Chinese who have not registered was telegraphed from the Treas- ury Department today, as follows “The time within which Chinese laborers are required by the act of May 5, 1892, to procure certificates of residence will expire on the fifth ay of the present month, and it is evident from the partial reports made to this depart- ‘ment by the collectors of internal revenue that in some of the states and territories large numbers of such persons have failed or refused to make application as required by the law, but until complete reports are received the names and residences of those who have registered and procured certificates and who are, therefore, exempt from arrest, cannot be officially known. “Collectors of internal revenue and collectors of customs and all other customs officials of the United States are therefore instructed to retrain from making arrests under the provisions of the sixth section of the act approved May 5, 1892, enti- tled ‘An act to prohibit the coming of Chinese persons into the United States,’ until farther orders and instructions from this department ‘The Attorney General has supplemented this circular by instructing United States attorness “to defer proceedings under act of May 5, 1892, except under order of court, until necessary rrangements for the arrest, imprisonment and deportation of persons accused can be per- fected, of which due notice will be given.” SSS yy ON THE FAIRGROUNDS Good Weather Draws Many to the Exposition, PROCESSIONS 10 BE PREVENTED, Gossip of Disputes Amomg the Exhibitors. DROWNED BY SHIPWRECE. NO PARADES ON THE FAIR GROUNDS, A Position Taken That Will Cause Much Dissatisfaction. Cmicaco, May 4.—Chief of Construction Burnham has decided that no processions will be allowed through the world’s fair grounds, and this action will probably play havoc with the assignments made by foreign governmenta, as well us the different states of this country to have ceremonies in their respective buildings, Chief Burnham tekes the ground that the pro- cessions would block up the roadways and that other visitors, having equal rights, would be ‘compelled to keep out of the line ‘of march, The case upon wich this decision was based is that Norway, whose commissioner, Gen.
