Special Cable to the New York Herald. Paris, May 2—Nothing has been talked Every one was astonished last Thursday morning upon reading in several news- Papers that Vicomte Egason de Breteuil, in consequence of heavy financial losses and Rus- sian grain speculation made at the instigation ter to do one of three things—to resign from the Circle Royal. to fight a series of duels until one of the adversaries should be killed or se- verely wounded or to give 1,000,000 francs to the Paris poor. It subsequently turned out that M. de Bre- teuil had lost large sums in grain speculation tered into upon M. Ephrussi's advice. The Vicomte Breteuil had never made a personal [ Sohlonar of his losses, but was offended at M. ;phrussi’s having induced some of his friends to follow his example. FIGHT OR PAY UP. M. de Breteuil, in fact, paid his indebtedness, which reached the figure of 400,000f, and al lowed a month to elapse before insisting on the explanation which took place in the visitors’ room of the Rue Royale Club. In this conversation M. Breteuil accused M. Ephrusai of inducing his friends to speculate in grain while aware that the chances were that they would lose their money, and insisted that M. Ephrussi should either resign from the club or fight aduel, the choice of weapons being left to M. Ephrussi. Instead of naming sec- onds M. Ephrusei asked sevoral friends to. try and prevail upon M. Breteuil to change his mind, but this M. Breteuil declined to do. A MILLION TO THE POOR. ‘M. Epbrussi then proposed a compromise by offering to give a million francs to the poor. ‘M. de Breteuil declared that being unable to obtain any offer of satisfaction he did not feel ified in depriving the poor of Paris of such a gift. Breteuil declined to distribute the million to the poor himself, as he says he does uot wish | ny personal prestige to be reflected by the nerous act of his adversary, and so the fund istered by common friends in Ephrusei’s name. Itis only fair to put on record that M. Ephru: is now suffering from gout, which makes him nite lame, and in the opinion of his maitre Varmes, who is also the fencing master of the Vicomte de Breteuil, renders him incapable of sppearing on the terrain, |. Ephrussi has not left Paris. but receives no one, being confined by his illness, which a recent death in his family and the events above mentioned have not tended to alleviate. ONE DUEL AND MORE TO cox M. Drumont of the Litre Parole is opening fire upon Ephrussi, while on Sunday Camille Dryfus, the well-known deputy, whose duel with the Marquis de Mores a few days ago was the Parisian sensation of the hour. has pub- lished an article in hia paper, La Nativ, which [. de Breteuil deemed a reflection upon his character. ‘M. Breteui! on Sunday morning, accom- psnied by two of his friends, Comte de Dion and Capt. Chaboard, called upon M. Dryfus and offered kim personal and corporal, insult, whei his seconds to M. "Breteuil. In consequence a duel was fought at the foot of Mount Valarian at 5 o'clock on Monday afternoon. Two bullets were exchanged at the word of command without any result. It is expected that several other duels now on the tapis will be the outcome of all thi cs FREE BATHS IN BALTIMORE. But It May Be Dificult to Secure the Nec- essary Funds The ordinance providing for tho establish- ment of free pu river, which was introduced in the first branch of the Baltimore city council on Monday night by Councilman Schleifer, is meeting with gen- eral approval from all classes of citizens in| that city. Every one is interested in the pas- sage of the mensuro by the council, end, though | the shortage of funds is known and appreciated, it is hoped that enough can be saved to meet the expense incurred in building these five bath houses, The city has long been in need of such bath houses, says the American, and for many years there has been more or less agitation of the subject. Ithas been urged in advocacy of the establishment of the baths that they will be beneficial in many ways. They will undoubt- edly be an excellent adjunct to thesaritary sys- tem of the city, as the delights and blessings of a bath are not known to all residents. There is a law which now provides that all dwellings | erected within the city limits shall be supplied with bath rooms, but this is of recent origin, and there are thousands of dwellings erected prior to its passage not supplied with bath rooms. To the residents of many of these houses a complete bath is almost unknown. Another city law makes it a misdemeanor, with a fine as the penalty, for bathing in the waters of the Patapsco river or Jones Falls within the city limits. As cleanliness is one of the best and surest means of preventing the rise or spread of an epidemic, and as the city | health authorities are now laboring to prevent the introduction of the dreaded cholera scourge this summer, the baths would prove of great value as another precautionary measure. ‘The only question would be ns to their general use by the great “unwashed,” but it 1s thought that if favorably and conveniently located, in the manner, for instance, as suggested by the ordi- nance, there need be no fears as to their popu- Inrity, tions. Despite the prohibitory law, hundreds of boys within the city limits take daily baths in the waters of the harbor. The watchfulness of the police is more than matched by the vigil- ance and cunning of the average mischief-lov- ing youngster. During these stolen baths many boys annually lose their lives. ‘A talk was had yesterday with several city councilmen on the subject, and all were more or less favorable to the passage of the ordi- nance. aa A Lucky Accident. From Science Siftings. One of the greatest discoveries ever made was the result of the purest accident. It was the year 1796. The citizens of Munich had just witnessed tho first triumphant perform- ‘ance of Mozart's opera, “Don Juan,” and tho theater was doserted by all save one man, Alois Sennefeider, who, after making a round of inspection in the building to see that no sparks had ignited anything combustible, re- tired to his room to stamp the tickets of nd- mission for the day following. When he entered his apartments he had three things in his hand—a polished whetstone which he had purchased for sharpening razors, a ticket | stamp still moistned with printing ink and a check on the treasurer of the theater for his weekly salary. As he placed the latter upon the table a gust of wind swept it high up in bis room and then deposited it in a basin filled with water. Sennefelder dried the wet paper as well as he could and then weighed it down with the whetstone upon which he had before carelessly placed the printing stamp. When he returned to his room the following morning he was aston- ished nt seeing the letters printed with re- markable accuracy upon the dampened paper. A thonght came to him. He won- dered whether by some such means he could | not simplify his work of continually copying the songs of the chorus. He went out and purchased a large stone, commenced making experiments, and, we all know, finaliy dis covered the art of printing from stone—lithog- raphy. It Fell on His Nose. From the Chicago Tribune, “In the case of the word onion,” in the teacher, “where does the accent fall? And the sad-erey, thoughtful boy with the freckled face saii the accent fell mostly on the nose. oe Of Course Not. From Vogue. “You don't mean to say that in Chicago lndies wear gloves at dinner?” “Why, of course they do. Would you have them eat asparagus without?” rae E. L.
