Ifyou have asum of money from the interest or earning power of which you are dependent for support, or if you are avatting an opportunity to invest in some paying enterprise, no better way to keep your “money moving” than by investing in our CFRTIFICATES OF DEPOSIT, which pay 4 percent in three months, 5 percent in six months and 6 er cent in one year. ‘This is the most satisfactory method of investment, especially for ladies, as it relieves the investor of all worry and at the same time insures the prompt Payment of interest. We also issue ‘Demand” CERTIFI- CATES OF DEPOSIT, which pay 3 per cent interest on demand. ‘These are in- tended for those who are likely to need their money af any time and who can- ‘ot deposit for a given time, as they en- able the holder to get possession of his cash on demand, without notice, and at the same time earnsa fair rate of in- terest. We do a general banking business, tsaue 'etters yf credit and draw exchange om the principal cities of the world. We shall be pleased to open an account with YOU. Wooos & Colitaces 1222 F Srarer N.W. Thousands of Persons Visit the Exposition Grounds, Cuicaco, May 2.—Bright sunshine and « clear sky made the big white world’s fair build- ings attractive to look upon this morning, and at the first opening of the gates there was a thin stream of visitors through, which swelled to a steady current of human- inty as the forenoon wore on. The early comers were considerably jostled and posted around by the men who were removing the de- bris and other evidences of yesterday's opening, and inside the buildings gangs of laborers were at work unpacking belated exhibits and putting them in place. The roadways, too, were not the | most attractive places in the world for the exer- cise of pedestrianism, Between the sleeping amphitheater, banked against the administration building, ‘and the , basin with the giant statue guarding ite shore line, lay a placid sea of I, trodden and stirred up by the feet of the thousands of people who had gathered there yesterday. To the east Lake Michigan, and to the sonth the balls of agricultare and mechanic arte showed their chiffs of entablature and smooth columns, all the whiter for the acres of liquid mud streteb- ing away from them, | The great statue of the Republic gave strength and splendor to the whole scene. Under foot a quagmire of all uncleanness; above, around and on every side light, color, Prismatic-hued flags, warmth and beauty. AVOIDING THE MUD. In this condition of affairs it was not strange that the rolling chairs and electric launches were well patronized. In the former fat men lolled at ease, propelled by slim-waisted stu- dents in natty uniforms, and haughtily disregarded the gibes and ‘jeers of hardier visitors who plowed through the mud On the lagoons the electric launches and naphtha boats were filled with parties of ladies and children, who viewed the panorama in comfort from the water. ASPHALTING THE ROADS. The mud problem will soon be solved, how- ever. Director of Works Burnham, whoturned up early this morning after the fatigue and excitement of yesterday, says that all the road- ways will be asphalted within the week. Then, instead of clinging mud, there will bea smooth, even surface which will turn the water into the sewers and with it whatever mud may accumu- late, for the roadways will be flusbed every night by the exposition fire department, and will be spick and «pan every morning. The forenoon crowds of visitors soon learned that most of the buildings were in the hands of the installation people, and most of the atten- tion was devoted to the wooded island, the battle ship and the Midway plaisance, where everything is compiete. IN MIDWAY PLATSANCE. In the Intter avenue, which has already been nicknamed “Nigger Row,” because of the dark hue of most of its denizens, ororring ot in full blast from early morning. The after prayers in the mosque, began the secular occupation of enticing the nimble dollar from the pockets of the infidel throng. The dancing girl writhed and pirouetted before gaping crowds of curiosity seekers; the Irish coileens in Lady Aberdeen’s village—from which pigs are eru- elly excluded—put on their sweetest smiles; the Dahomeyans grunted their approval of the sunshiny wenther; the South Sea Islanders stalked forth and exchanged the greetings of the day with their next doorneigh- bors from the Island of Ceylon, and there was agenerai air of enjoyment not unmixed with business pervading the whole thoroughfard, OUTSIDE THE GROUNDS. Onteide the grounds the cable cars unloaded thousands of passengers, many of whom were attracted by the sideshows which line the strects for blocks on each side of the entrances, The lemonade and popcorn men did a. thriving | business, the dime mnseums were well patron- ized and everything showed that the big show with all its minor attractions and side isstes was in full blast. APOUT 300,000 ADMISSIONS YESTERDAY. * Horace Tucker, superintendent of the de- partment of admission, was an exceedingly busy man this morning, and his staff of assistants was equally so, Far into the t they labored to arrive at rrect and close estimate of the at- tendance at the opening ceremonies. The exact number of people who passed through the gutes of the white city will never be known, because thousands of pastes were used by ex- hibitors, their agents, fair emploves and news- paper men, which were not taken up at the | kates, co that the figures, as far as they include those people, must be approximate. The oficial figures wail be given out later, as Mr. T: is still at work on them, but it was ascertained from semi-official sources that the estimate made by the chief of the department late last night will fail somewhat flat in the face of the state- ment to be made to Treasurer Seeberger today. The estimate of 600,000 people will be reduced about half, as the coun: has proceeded far enough to warrant the basing of an estimated attendance, paid and free, of 300,000, Mr. Tucker and others who talked of half million and more based their figures on the supposition that every stock- holder who had tickets good for any day of the six months used them yesterday, and that cll the persons who held the 125,000 tickets sold in advance used them. The estimate of 100,000 exhibitors, employes, &c., being on the Rrounds 1s also excessive, ‘Still 900,000 is a great crowd considering the adverse conditions, and alongside the biggest day at the centennial exposition it becomes greater. Commissioners Massey and St, Clair, Presi- dent Higginbotham and Director Schwab ar- rived at administration building early to attend the meeting of the council, winich will endeavor to adjust the trouble in rezard to the make of piano to be used by Paderowki in Music Hall he meeting of the council will not be an entirely harmonious one, as Mr. St. Clair has not re- ceded from his determined stand against allow- ing in the grounds a piano made bya firm which refused to exhibit. wand administration building the setting given yesterday's scene was fast being changed. Acorps of men were at work removing the chairs from the grand stand, where the open- ing ceremonies took place. They were placed on wagons and carted to a place of storage. Two gangs of men were then put to work tearing down the stands, and by 2 o'clock it hud entirely disappeared and the I-mber was being rapidly taken away. At 10 o'clock in the morning an orchestra of sixty pieces, under the dircetion of Adolph Leixgang, gave an open-air concert in the stand in the west section of the plaza. A good crowd was in attendance and, mufiled in overcoats and wraps, listened to a tplendid program. The afternoon open-air concert was also weil at- tended, and this feature of the world’s fair Promises to receive much well-merited com- mendation. The display in electrity building is yet in such shape that it cannot be inspected with any sense of justice to exhibitors or d of plensure to tho visitors, and the building was closed. It is thought, however, that it will be in condition to warrant opening’ in a few days. ee Booth’s Condi.ion Unchanged.
