These rouths have been in the habit of congregating at Hun- gry Hill, Chariot alley and the vicinity of Grace street, and the officers of the law set forth that much annoyance to the public has resulted. Ofticers H. R. Lohman aud W. J, ‘Trussell divide honors in having broken up the nuisance. THE STATION HOUSE GuOUNDS, The flower garden agitation at station No. 7 continues and the postic and prosaic police- men cross clubs on the subject. Some profess to believe that the grounds surrounding the station should be given over to foricultare, while others believe that the desert should be made to bloom with vegetables thut can be util- ized for food. ‘The proposition to invest part of the gymuasium fund in bulbs and ruse cut- tings was lost by au overwhelming majority. Ashley of thet city to Tue Stan representative at the Ebbitt this morning. “The good old days when the harbor was crowded with whaling vessels are past, and now big brick mills and operatives’ houses are going up, The wheling fleet has been transferred to the Pacitic coast and we ship our crews to San Francisco. About all that 1s left of the old whaling in@ustry in New Bedford is that we still manufactare the whale oil casks. “The whaling capital has now been invested fn home indusiries and mulls uave sprung up on every side. Three large new cotton milis are in course of erection, while «tx woolen and yarn mills have been erected. Onr population bas increased 9,000, and next to Fall Liver we are the largest cotton manufacturing town in Mas- tachusette. We will build an electric road to Fall River. “Party lines ere not particularly drawn in local politics. The democrats arc, however, increasing rapidly and wall continue to increase, Decause the fellacious doct-ines of the repub: lican tariff have been knocked out. I will give you an amusing and instractive example. Prior to the last election New Bedford had two very prosperous years, which they attributed to the tariff, of course. ‘The republicans de- clared that if Cleveland was elected that this prosperity would cvase, that they would close Sp thelr mila, and, fuxthermens.. thet the would not ‘build the Jristol, Columbia and another mill. In fact, they dangied the free trade bugaboo from every telegraph pole.” “Mr. Cleveland was elected, and strange to say they started in at once digging the founda- tions for these big mills and they have since been built and their stock is now selling at par, This has been a big object lesson to the voters of New Bedford, particularly i» the timid ones in both parties, and they are learning that the of cotton goods depends on the cousump- and demand and supply instesa of ou the man who occupies the presidential chair. “Although the democrats of Igubo fused on Weaver electors at the Iast election,” said "A Detroit Woman's Way.
