But the inspector is also aware of the fact that the largest section of the inaugural crowd will not be here until tonight and tomorrow, and that then is the time that the “crooks” are more apt to ply their ‘vocation and walk off with a pocket book, watch or a diamond pin. Thus far the detectives and officers have watched the depots, hotels and crowded thor- oughfares, avd this morning nine alleged ie " persons were behind the bars, to be held until after the inaugural ceremonies are over. Along Pennsylvania avenue last evening some of the visitors were rather ‘‘gay.” as the police express it, but many of their little pranks were overlooked on account of the jon and the result was that very few arrests for disorderly conduct werd made, and there was not moze than the usual number of prisoners at the Police Court tbe Beat i rd iret alleged crook picked up yesterday was arrested by one of the Pinkertoa men at the Baltimore and Ohio depot, and the risoner’s companion was arrested later inthe day by Detective Walsh of St. Louis and Detective Boardman. _ The Fasy terms. Igot on de train at Gordin- ville an’ a nice-Iukin’ man was in do seat wid me. Atter awhile he got up and went out, and | den when I got off de cahs I seed my suchel was me,” and the old colored lady, overcome by er misfortune, broke down and cried, while the gaping crowd pushed about ber and in- quired of one another what was up. A big fellow pushed the lookers aside. He wore a new silk hat and the badge of the Cook County Democracy on his coat. It took him but with a rough, “Well. here's a quarter for luck; learn you some sense about travelling, may be," he pushed his way out. Others followed suit with small change, and the crowd dissolved, leaving auntie still prating, “‘Tankee, tankee, sab,” mingled with descriptions of the little blue handkerchief and the stolen hand satchel. THE PUBLIC COMFORT COMMITTEE. The public comfort eommittee justly deserved ite name today. As early as 6 o'clock this morning eight of them reported for duty at the Baltimore and Potomac depot, and as many at the Baltimore and Ohio. — From then on, with new members constantly added, they busied themselves answering questions and giving di- rections to the hundreds of travel-stained trav- elers continually arriving. The wot, dreary | weather packed the depot” with visitors awaiting friends, and it ‘was no easy matter to set aright the many be- fogged individuals asking for aid. All the morn- ing trains were more or less late, and thisadded | to the discomfort. One committeeman said he bad made a fairly satisfactory effort to answer every question from the probable arrival | have the Reltoners wore Wm. ‘lliams, young men who are well known to the St. Louis officers. Williams is said to be onie of the brightest crooks in the west, although he is only twenty-one years old. His companion is ono year his junior. TO WORK THE CROWD. A young man who gave bis nameas Quinn was found at the Baltimore and Onio depot by Oficer Horne and he, too, was locked up. “That's right,” ho said when accused of hav- ing come to “work” the crowd, and then he anted to accompany the officer and point out | other “crooks,” but the officer knew he would get the “go by" and the young man would ugh on him, and thinking a “bird ia the hand is worth two in the bush” he put him in the cell with “‘Santy” Connors, Detective Ziegler of St. Louis and Detective | Boyd arrested Louis Clements, who gave his as twenty-nine years. The St. Louis officer knew the man in the west and he thought for isitors he had better be held. y known to the Boston officers and now the Washington officers are also acquainted with him. Detective Nugent of Boston and Detective Carter stopped him on the street and escorted him to a place of safety. where he will not find the best accommodations in the world, although he will be in out of the weather. HIB STORY DID XoT ao. Charles F. Jones, a colored Bostonian twenty- nine years old, was interviewed by Inspector Knox of Boston and Detective Quinlan. His explanation of his presence here at this time was not satisfactory to the officers apd he went to'a police station to. enjoy the quarters pro- vided, a stone floor and an iron cot. Another victim was Robert Wedge, thirty year-old colored man from Philadelphia, and with him was a young woman who gave her me as Mary Wedge. Ins York and Detectives arrested the couple. Thomas J. @ummins, one of the oldest and best-known newspaper men in New York, who | was the Albany correspondent of the New York Herald for fourteen years and who is one of the best political writers in the country, is at the Arlington. It was he who first published the name of Grover Cleveland as a possible candidate for governor in the New York papers in the sum-| mer preceding the Syracuse convention that nominated Mr. Cleveland. Mr. Cummins and George W. McCune, proprietor of the Buffalo Courier, and now deceased, were in Sarat discussing the probable ‘candidates whose names would go before the state convention in| the fall. Mr. McCune then said that he thought | that Mr. Cleveland's name would be presented and spoke very highly of his administration as mayor of Buffalo. That night Mr. Cummins sent the first dispatch to the Herald which stated Mr. Cleveland's ambition. “The uncertainty of the action of a political | convention,” he said to Tux Stan representa- tive, “is well illustrated by that which nomi nated Mr. Cleveland. Roswell P. Flower and Gen. Slocum of Brooklyn were the principal candidates and on the first ballot had 123 votes each. Jobn Kelly was then the Tammany leader. Thomas Kinsella of the Brooklyn Eagle led the Slocum forces. It was expected that Flower bad a fair chance of nomination, and he | might have been named but for the misma: | ment of bis campaign by his friends.
