Safety at the Ball. ‘There is one committee that does not have much to do until the night of the bill, and even then their duties will be of rather a nominal character. being more defensive than offensive. except under emergencies that are not pleasant to contemplate. This is the committee on safety, of which Mr. Joseph Parris, chief of the fire department, is the chairman, and Mr. J. D. Entwisle, clerk in the same department, is the secretary. Their duties xs laid down by the executive committee are to take such steps and make such arrangements xs will best pretect the pension building from fire and perform any other duty looking todhe anfety and comfort of the guests at the inaugural ball. On the night of the bali the members of the fire department will have a room set aside where the Johnson pumps and fire extingnisher will be stored. All hose connections will be made and the stationary engine at the buildin will be used in case of an emergency. At Bhi times there will be a pressure of fifty pounds to the aquare inch, and in case of a greater con- flagration there will be connection with the nearest engine company. The members of the committee will constantly patrol the ball room and the building, and in case of fire an alarm gong will be sounded. M 5 at — jon a Mi Chas. M. Seitz, N. Z. The Printing Committee. The biggest job the priating committee has had tq.do has been the issuing of the pamphlet containing the names of. all the inaugural com- mittees, This is quite s book in itself, for it fills sixty pages and contains over 4,000 names. ‘MR. Hay, who bas been placed at the head of | the committee on floor and promenade at the inaugural ball. This is not the first time that Mr. Hay has filled this responsible position, and for years no committee for any Jarge chari- table or'social affair has been regarded as quite complete without bis name in the list. He bas & very gracious manner about him and this is shown in everything that he does. For ex- ample, in the notice that he sent out to the CHIEF PARRIS. Every man, woman and child in the District of Columbix knows the head of the fire depart- ment, Chiet Joseph Parris. He was born in ‘Washington on December 7, 1835, and may be said to be a born fireman, for even in his tender years he ran after the apparatas, and when he became a man he ran after the old Union and Western Hose volunteer companies. In 1864 the paid fire department of the District was or- ganized and the following rear Chief P: tered the service a a private in Engi y No. 1. Five rears later he was made foreman of his company and in May, 1886, was romoted to the head of the fire department. Trewas appropriately placed at the head of the committee on safety. Through the public spirit of Mr. Benj. P. Snyder, presi- dent of the National Safe Deposit Company, a Yoom over the bank at the northeast corner of 15th street and New York avenue was given free of cost, and from there the flags obtained from the War and Navy departments have been dis- tributed. The committee was deluged with ap- plications for flags from avenue merchants and the demand was greater than the supply. Every flag loaned by the committee is carefully looked after, the borrower signing a bond by which he binds himself to be responsible for all damage ‘that may accrue to the bunting while in his Possession. The six subcommuttees have charge of different portions of the avenue decorations as follows: Committee No. 1 will superintend the display from Ist to 7th strect, No. 2 from 7th to 12th, No. $ from 12th to 15th, No. 4 from 15th to 17th, No. 5 from 17th to 19th and No. 6 from 19th to 22d. This takes in the entire avenue from the Capitol to Washington Circle, the main route f the procession. Williams, Zedock MR WM. A. HUTCHINS. ‘The members of Mr. Hutchins’ committee are: Louis D.
