Take no steps. Do nothing. BK, HaRnisox.” ‘THE PRESIDENT'S STATEMENT. A Stan reporter questioned Private Secretary Halford at the White House on the subject day and obtained from him the following state- ment, the publication of which was authorized by the President: “The President was not informed of theinten- tion of the Secretary of the Treasury to vieit w York and has not communicated with him or heard from him in any way. He has not been unobservant of the financial situation and does not think the treasury will find it necessary to adopt any new policies, He has said several times publicly that he would mxintain the parity of all our money issues, and that declaration stands. There is no disagree- ment between the President and the Secretary as to the management of the treasary GOLD EXPORTATION AT AN EXD. Treasury officials generally are of opinion that the exportation of American gold ix at an end for the present, and that conditions sure to come in the near future will result in the re- covery of auch that has already goue abroad. Treasurer Nebeker says he thinks the people who have been drawing gold from this country, if they had in view the breaking down of American credit and the depreciation of the circulation in this country based on silver coin and silver bullion, bave found the tack too great, and have given it up. The willing- ness of the banks to supply the government with gold has been an important feature in the situation, and has practically converted » greater part of the $60,000,000 gold stock in this country into @ treasury balance of that amount. ‘The treasurer also calls attention to the fact thata great factor in the loss of gold every enmmer is the large amount needed to pay the bills of Americans traveling — in Europe. In ordinary years there is an enormous amount of money spent by Americans traveling abroad. They carry with them letters of credit on bankers in various parts of Europe and are given the money of the countries they desire to visit. The Ameri- can bankers issuing these letters of credit must then arrange to hate the European bankers reimbursed for the money paid out, and this is done by the shipment of gold. xt summer, — howev the probability is that many Americans who would otherwise go to Europe will stay at home and visit the world’s fair insteaa; and at the same time there will be a considerable stream of travel from Europe to this country, and every European visitor to the fair” will spend considerable money from the time be lands in this country until he leaves, and all this expenditure by visitors will act to decrease the usual summer balance against this country. It is not likely that it will make @ balance ‘the other way principal feature of the balance against the United States during the wummer and autumn is caused by the heavy imports from Europe at the time of vear when the exports are lighter than late in the fall and during the winter and spring. THE QUARANTINED WHITE HOUSE. One Bad Result of Combining Public Offices and Private Besidence. It isa singular commentary on American in- stitutions that the President of the United States is compelled by stress of circumstances to conduct the business of his office in a build- ing, the principal part of which is quarantined by the local health authorities as « place of danger. ‘This is one of the evil results of combining the public office and the private residence of the chief exeentive in the sume building. The President's grandchild is down with the scarlet fever and the entire household, from the Presi- dent down are in more or less danger from the contagion. ‘The fact that the patient is isolated in a secluded part of the mansion of course mini- mizes the danger, but does not remove it altogether despite the extreme sanitary precautions taken for their safety. Fortunately the disease has been successfully confined to the one case 60 far, but there is no certainty that it may not yet claim another victim among the many persons whom existing conditions compel to remain under the same roof, FEARS OF ALARMISTS, Indeed, there are alarmists who assert that the germs of the disease will exist in the house | long after the recovery of the present case, and will seriously endanger the health of the family of the incoming president, especially the juvenile member, meaning, of course, the celcbrated Baby Ruth. This is a very extreme view, how- ever, and 1 hardly justifiable, especially in view of the radical measares taken to prevent a spread of the disease and which will be redoubied when the present case j has run its course, Nothing will be left undone to ensure the en- | tire eradication of all contaminating germ | that may possibly linger in the vicinity of the sick chamber. A PRESENTATION DELAYED. One of the effects of the present condition of affairs at the White House is to delay the formal tation to the President of the Brazilian commissioners’ who are now in this city for the purpose of submitting to bis arbitrament the question in dispute beween Brasil and the Argentine republic over the Missioner bound- ary line. They presented » request to that ef- fect to Secretary John W. Foster yesterday, | but at his suggestion the ceremony bas been deferred for the present on account of sickness in the President's family. It ix not altogether improbable that the President mi deem ‘it advisable to accord | them a preliminary audience at the State De- | partment or at the residence of the Secretary | of State, as there is no likelihood of the quar- antine at the White House being raised for t weeks vet. ‘These presentations usually am ye in the blue parlor, it being the only aundience chamber in’ the building. but the President | may waive all precedents in such matters and | receive the visitors in bis private office. is a much less praten' | might answer the purpose as well as the other.
