Why the Kentucky Statesman is Willing to Leave the Senate. Some of Mr. Carlisle's admirers cannot understand how he can consent to go into the cabinet when the Senate seemingly opens so mich broader field for his abilities, It is urged that his genius is for legislation and not for executive work and that, while he is well up in financial affairs, tariff matters and the like, it is the legisintive end he should Lold and that the routine of the departmental service is not suited to him. A reason for Carlisle's’ being inclined to ac- cept the treasury portfolio may be found in the fact that he cannot take the leading part in the tariff and financial legisiation. If he could go to the head of the finance committee of the Senate, as some of his friends desire, he would not be apt to agree to leave the Senate. The fact that it is certain that this position must go to Mr. Voorhees renders Mr. Carlisle's position in the Senate less attractive. The statement made in Tux Star some time ago that Carlisle was almost certain to go at the head of the Treasury Department has been seized upon by the politicians, who, discover- ing it to be true. are generally well pleased with the prospect. Some of the Kentucky statesmen, who have their eyes on Carlisle's senatorial shoes, are particularly pleased. es -o-- A BRUSH WITH BANDITS, Lieut. A curious state of affairs existent San Ignacio, A fow days ago Judge Antonio Navarro, county Judge of Zapata counts, residing at Carizza, received a letter from a citizen of San Ignacio stating that on several occasions Mexican sol- diers had crossed to that point in full uni- form, ‘armed to the teeth, and compelled several of their brother soldiers, survivors of the San Igancio fight, to return to Mexican soil with them, threatening them with instant death if they did not retarn to Mexico.
