Chairman Berret Appoints an Additions! Number of Representative Citizens. Col. J. G. Berret, chairman of the committee on fnangural ceremonies, today appointed a large number of additional committee. The letter from Chairman Harrity parlor, evening, the 20th in- ery truly yours, Jaues G, Bennet, Chait THE ADDITIONAL RAMES. The following is « complete list of the mem- bers appointed today: Dr. Charles Allen, Jas. L. Barbour, Walter Y.R Berry, Dr. Samuel ©. Busey, Robert ¥ Ball, Wm.’ E. Walter D. Davi ing, Robert Mills” Dean, Edward Droop, Matthew G. Emery, ‘A. Gardner, Henry Dr. Wm. V. Marmion, Alexander Porter Morse, John R McLean, ‘Wm. Cranch Melntire, William O'Donnell, Theodore Noyes, Nebemish J. Ordway, E. Prancis Riggk, Theophilus E. Rocssle,Capt. William T. Rosecll, Frank 4. Richardson, Di, Charles G. Stone, isadore Saks, Owen G. Staples, Richard Smith, William H. Selden, Loais Schade, Frederick ( Stevens, Ricbard W. Tyler, Henry 0. Toxles, Franklin Tenney, Dr. Joseph M. Toner, Joba W. Thompson, Dr. 'T.'8. Verdi, Brainard H. Warner, Beriah Wilkins, Henry A. Willard, Wash B: Williams, Jesse B. Wilson, Jeremiah M, Wilson. The following are appointed to represent the army, navy and marine corps: Maj. Gen. John M. Schofield, U. 8. A.; Brig. Gen, John Moore, U. 8. A.; Gen. Absolem Baird, U. 8. A.; Brig. Gen. William B, Rochester, U.'8. A. Thomas Ijncoln Casey, U. 8. A.; Brig. Gen. Thomas M. Vincent, U.'S. “A.; Col. Oswald H. Rear Admiral James A. Greer, U. S..N.; Surg. Gen. John Mille Browne, U.S.N.; Paymaster General William Smith, U. W. Bacon, U.8.N. ; Col. Charles Haywood, MC. U.8.M.C. A. 8. Nicholson, U. . M. C. Goodloe, U.S.M.C.; Capt. G. B. Rei WILL GET TO WORK AT oXcE. Speaking to a Stam reporter this morning Chairman Berret said: “I have endeavored to appoint a list which will be satisfactory to every one, representing all the various hases of ‘life pl here, social, political—in fact, a committee SMC. represen- tative of Washington. It is eminently @ working committee, and I believe we will be able to make the coming inangura- tion as great a success as any of its predeces- sors. Above all other cities Washington isa hospitable city and we have proved time and again our ability to eare for the largest crowds and to entertain them well. I am confident that this committee will be ready to buckle down by next Tuesday and startin stonce, There is an immense amount of work to be done and we will have to get at it without delay, but we have one big ad- vantage in the fact that we are used to this sort of work. Itisno new business.” THE INAUGURATION BALL. There is one problem that will confront the committee, but as yet nothing has been done in the matter and Col. Berret was unwilling to discuss what may be done when the com- mittee meets. The 4th of March comes on Saturday next year and the ques- tion of the customary inaugural — ball at once comes up in this connection. The ball hardly ever gets under full headway much before midnight and this would bring it into Sunday morning. This being the caso there might be a deal of ficulty in securing a government build- ing for the ball. The suggestion has been made that a great promenade concert be substituted for the customary bell, with the Marine Band and other famous musical organ zations as the attractions. This matter wil probably be one of the first to receive consid- eration at the hands of the full committee. ee THE GARBAGE SERVICE. Petitions Asking the Authorities to Establish a Dally Schedule. “Does Washington noed a daily garbage serv- ice?” ‘That is the question which the Commis- sioners will wrestle with at future board meet- ings. Today several petitions signed pretty gener- ally by citizens from all quarters of the District were received by the Commissioners urging such a plan, One of the petitions addressed to Health Officer Hammett reads as follows: “We, the undersigned residents of this citr, had hoped, in view of the many complaints made to your office during last summer of serious nuisances growing out of a failure to have our garbage removed daily, that you would see your way clear’ to sug- gest legislation on the subject. But we learn upon inquiry that no steps have yet been taken by you or the Commis- sioners to bring this matter to the attention of Congress. A tri-weekly service does not meet the reasonable demands of the Washington pub- He, and we feel satisfied that your knowledge of sanitation will induce you, as the guardian of the city's health, to give usa daily garbgo ser- vice such as all other cities have.” THE BURNT MILLS RAILWAr, Arrangements Made for a Survey of the Route. A meeting of the directors of the Burnt Mills and Sandy Springs Railroad Company was held yesterday at the office of Mr. Albert Gleason on 14th street. It was stated that arrangements had been made fora survey of the proposed new road which is torun from this city to Burnt Mills and Sandy Springs. The road will start from the bounds of the city at the head of New York avenue and go by Riggs’ Mills to Burnt Mills, and #0 on to =the end of the line. "The capital of the company $200,000, and it is expected that the work of construction will be begun as soon as the exact route is determined. The tadlo dhote dinnersat the Army and Navy Club have become quite « ineti- ‘tat and there are now about five | who take their dinners regularly at the club. Liout. Culver, the secretary of the Army and | Navy Club, has been busily engaged for some | time past on the book of ithe club, con’ the constitution, by-laws and list of members, | that is published each year about this time. | Tae corrected proots ha e been sent beck to the printers and the new iy | iewusa Deadsowe pob- | lication and fully up to standard set in | | ous years. The list of members shows an tn- | | crease in the past year of 101, with a total resi- | | dent membership of 292. | The introduction of the Saturday evening | readings at the University Club has proved to | beagreat success. A number of well-known | gentlemen have accepted invitations to address | the club in this way. Last Saturday Mr. Ricb- | ard Hovey's paper, in which he discussed the | | tendencies of modern poetry and ite future, | with special reference to this country, was heard with much interest. Tonight Bi | Keane, the rector of the Catholic University, | will address the club on “Kinship Between | Philosophical and Scientific Studies in Our Day." ‘There will probably be quite a large at- | tendance, as the members have the privilege of bringing friends with them. These readings | are held in the large parlors of the club house and are quite informal in their character. At a special meeting of the Down Town Club, called for next Monday evening at 7:30 o'clock, the members will vote upon several proposed | amendments to the constitution. One places | | the initiation fee at $80, and another the an-| | nual dues at $36, instead of $24, ae it is at | present. A very pretty iden is being carried into effect Club. Collections of photo- | graphs of the various leading universities rep- | resented in the membership of the club are | being made to hang upon the walls of the club | house. They are presented by the graduates | Of the respective universities, and as they are | to be handsomely framed, they will make a | most interesting display. "The first one made is acct of photographs of different buildings of the University of Virginia, with a fine | ortrait of Thomas Jefferson. These have | been bung on the wall of the large north dra | ing room. It is expected that the other uni- | Yersities will be pictured in a similar way very | soon. | Itisprobable thata number of the college j alumni banqnets will be held at the University | Club this winter. see ALEXANDRIA.
