This morning in the Police Court Lawyer | Closs, who is counsel for the alleged policy backers, appearod and asked that the court st | day for trial. In this case are Messrs. Hor- | bach, King and Baldwin, white, and Bowie and | Jobnson, colored. ‘They are charged with con- ducting a policy shop on New York avenue, where Deputy Marshal Joyce made a raid. Mr. Mullowney appeared for the government, and, | after a discussion of the case, the court set the | hearing for next Thursday. Mr. Closs then complained that Moses John- fon, who was under $300 bail, had been rear- rested and locked up because ‘the government wanted his bail increased to $1,000. He char- | acterized the action of the government as an | outrage and charged that the action of the government was only done because of & desire to keep tho man in jail. He ssid that was no P= against him except that of a ip d thief, and he was willing to bet $2 to cents that Johnson could not be convicted. Counsel nsked that buil be fixed at $300, saying he could furnish that amount, and he would guarantee that Johnson would be in court for Judge Miller said that he would fix the bail at $1,000, the same as fixed in the case of Hor- bach and others.
