THE EVENING STAR._ “WASHINGTON. ‘WEDYESDAY .. a r 8. NOYES... HE EVENING STAR has « regular permanent circulation in Washington three | times larger than that of any other paper in thecity. As a local NEWS paper and Ad- Vertising Medium it petitor. ————— ‘Never in all its history, not even at the grand review of May, 1865, has the natiogal capital been the scene of as noble a spectacle as that of | yesterday. The scene presented was the parade of eighty thousand veterans of the great war for the Union witnessed by perhaps quadruple ‘that number of persons, with the gorgeous ac- companiment of bunting end other appropriate decoration and the pomp and melody of na- tional music. But these figures of brave men | and fair women, this array of brilliant banners and rich ornaments, this majestic illumination 4m all the colors of the prism were but the ex- tornals of America’s profound feeling and patri- | otic life. Deep down in the heart of every man fn the procession and of every person who be- held it was the conscionsnoss that the national Deing is potent and pervading as it never was before the present period, and that the perils of the republic are henceforth only such as en- compass all nations on the onward wave of civilization. To this city yesterday's result ‘was most pleasing. Feeling itself the focus of the nation’s organized being and the radiant point of distribution of its light and energy, accumulated from the people, Washington is proud for itself and the republic that the dis-| play was so superb in all its complex arrange- ments and execution. It was a resnit in which all Americans take pride without regard to sec- tion or political alignment. There is no poli- tics, there is no sectionalism in American pa- mo peiseise OE nS TO es The opening of the Grand Encampment proper and numerous other bodies of veterans today enlists public attention toa smalier de- | gree than the reunion and parade features of the previous days. But the assembling of these | counctls is an event of very great importance to the veterans and their auxiliaries, the pa- triotic women of America. It is through these couneils that the organization of veterans is maintained and perfected. The real worl o! the grand encampments is done fn the sessions | of these bodies. The general public is inter-| ested to the extent of hoping that the present may be the very finest of all encampments in the legislative or deliberative as well asin the | executive and more showy features. —— The horrible accidents on the Pittsburg and Fort Wayne and Pennsylvania railroads, seem not to have been without the usual canse of carelessness and the usual accompaniment in the western road's case of fire. The American public is the most long-suffering, patient and forbearing in the whole world, but it is reason- able to suppose that after awhile even the American public will make up its mind to stop railwsy marders and the incineration of the Victims’ bodies. Just now, with many thon- sands of Union veterans and their families and friends entrasting themselves to the r mercies of the rail, the utmost skill and caution are required in all railroad officials. wee eas of the parade yester: Stion by wi army posts did not reach the city night or early this morning bad not occ This isa cause for regret on all hands. The Failways leading into the federal city did on's growth demrnds t and im; great work, bat Washingt en enlargem —s t and mentioned It ww at the very ond of his first speech and formed the closing words of | the concluding sentence. Bui it was there! | The rest of the oration wasa denunciation of Ixcwexts Or Tur Processtox. SOME VERY TOUCHING SCENES of ‘THE PASSING REGIMENTS. Perhaps no more affecting incident o! the procession, wae noticed than on Pennsylvania avenue st the Rortheast comer of 12th street. The gigantic bufld- ing, formerly the pension office, but now known as | the "Palais Royal” store, was one mass of bunting and flags. But it was not these special decorations or ‘even the pretty faces of the far women who crowded the hundred and one windows that caused the veter- | ans to momentarily halt and lustily cheer as they ware their hats. It was the pictures of heroes who, though now atient, are to memory 80 dear—Grant, Sheridan, Lincoln, Sherman, Logan, McClellan, Hancock, Meade and others are looking down on the Passing regiments, and though the well-known faces are only depicted on canvass a tear glistens in the eyes of many aveteranas hateare raised and handker chiefs are waved in response to lusty cheers. ‘The writer scribbled this as the regiment went by. The martial music and the scenes as depicted guide the pen differently than was intended, for this fe but an advertisement of the tact that the Palais Royal is headquarters for souvenirs of this greatest of all occa- sions. However, the sentiment as above expressed and now added comes from the heart of the writer not Jess than thousands of others. May the remaining vears of the lives of those who were spared in the great conftict be full of peace and honor. And now for business. Don't you want to carry home some memento other than memory? Here are Sterling Stlver Souvenir Spoons suggestive of the occasion. $1.25 will buy one of these Spoons, in the bowl of which is depicted the Capitol, the handle be- tng formed by a representation of Arlington, the rest- « placeof so many G. A. R. heroes. The mother or daughter, wife or sister who is left at home will thank you for one of these tiny Spoons, which are “Washington, 1892," is etched in the bowl. Only @1 each.
