James Thompson was held Sunday at his.late residence, No. 2108 11th street northwest. Capt. Thompson was born sixty-three years ago in Govan, a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland. After several years’ service in the British army he came to America, and about 1867 entered the regular army, where he served fourteen years and six months. He left the army with the rank of captain. A Powder Mill at Highland, California, Blown Up. ‘The explosion at Highland, Cal., on Saturday of the works of the Giant Powder Company, briefly noted in Saturday's Stax, was @ very serious affair. The intensity of the shock can be appreciated when it is known that it was distinctly felt at Sacramento, eighty miles distant, and thet windows were cracked at Napa and other points along the bay shore, twenty-five miles from the scene of the explosion. Along the east side of ‘San Francisco bay are a number of large powder manufactories which have been scenes of peri= odical explosions in which a number of lives have been lost.
