A Great Time at Union Lodge—Testimonials to Many Members. ‘The series of visitations of the grand master and his staff of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows increases with interest as they progress. A ‘They began April 16 and will end.on Thursday | evening, June 16. In the visitation to Union Lodge, No. 11, which occurred last night, there was a new departure, it being the first instance here of a Rebekah Degree lodge visiting a subordinate lodge. Union Lodge met early and transacted certain important business, after which there was a recess and soon Naomi Rebekah Degree Lodge, No. 1, escorted by Canton Potomse, arrayed in their bright unt- forms and commanded by Lieut. C. Ourand, entered the room in a body and were appro- pristely introduced by the grand master, Henry C. Hazard, and welcomed in a neat address by Noble Grand Jerome B. Stahl of Union Lodge. An interesting musical and literary program was carried outas follows: Solo by Edna J. Allen, reading by Past Grand Joseph A. Scott, banjo music by Wm. Crown and other mem- bers of the Mandolin Club, recitation Telephone,” by Past Grand ‘Richard Emmons; | song by Past Grand Wm. J. Palmer; banjo solo | by Geo. Clark, remarks and original recitation by Past Grand David L. Hazard. Then came the presentation of several testimonials of esteem as follows: Handsome baskets of flowers to Alice V. J. ‘aliner in a felicitousand eloquent address pre- | sented Grand Master Hazard (who is an active | member of Union Lodge) with a handsomely | engraved silver tea vet of six pieces. It was a surprise, but he was equal to the emergency | and responded in fitting terms. The whole company repaired to a large room below, where refreshments were served in abundance. The | rooms were tastefully decorated with flowers, lms, &c., and the whole affair will be a red Ketter day in the history of Union Lodge, the largest in this jurisdiction. ‘The whole arrange- ment was planned and executed by the “Bundle of Sticks,” a valuable auxiliary of the lodge, which assumed the entire expense of the whole affair. Tonight Golden Rule Lodge, No. 21, will be visited and on Thursday night Covenant Lodge, No. 13, which will be the finale of the series, The entertainment to be given in the Academ: of Music June 30, called “A Musical Absurdit bids fair to be a pronounced success, large sales of tickets being already announced. ‘The pro- ceeds are to be applied in the erection of a commodious new hall for Federal City Lodge, No. 20. fara ‘The Pentathlon Games. ‘The first regular monthly meeting of the Y. In other cities north of this point it was still hotter, and in some cities it was the hottest 13th of June for twenty-five years. : The exasperating feature of the situation is that there is no prospect of an early change in the temperature. The weather bureau says the hot weather is due to a condition termed insolation—direct effect of the heat above the earth. There is no moisture in the air and the motion of the upper current is slower, which produces stagnation. Toward bed time it grows cooler. This is due to the earth throwing off its heat rapidly and cooling off, the cool current gradually freehen- ing the atmosphere. It is well to keep close to the ground in the early hours of the evening, ‘and to seek a spot on a lawn or in the park, as sodded earth cools much quicker than the A thermometer held close to the grass will register ten degrees lower temperature than when held » dozen feet above the ground. It will be cooler on the front door steps than ‘on the second-story balcony for this reason. The only hope for cooler weather for the next few days is that some sly and eccentric rain storm which may be lurking in the moun- tains northwest of here may suddenly dart from its lair and swoop down with a rush on the sweltering valleys. , GEORGETOWN. “RED BILL” sHoT. John Jackson, alias “Red Bill,” the notorious desperedo, who almost from infancy bas given the police trouble, was, on Saturday night, shot by Sheriff Vietch of Virginia.
