AMUSEMENTS. Atnavon’s.—Planquette’s tunefal opera, the “Chimes of Normandy,” was presented at Al- Dough’s last night by the Carleton Opera Com- pany. and the audience, by its liberal applause, Aestitied its satisfaction with the performance. Two new people were introduced, Mise Marie Bell, who sang Serpolette, and Mr. T. Ricketts, who sustained the character of Gaspard. Both were well received, the latter proving himself an excellent actor and showing also a Yoice of good quality and power. Mr. Carleton sang the Marguis in fine style. receiving a de- | served encore upon hix opening solo, Marie Bach made an effective Germaine, and Mr. Drew got all there was out of the Baillie. The chorus was fnlly compe- tent, and some of its work was deservedly en- cored. The entire performance was satisfactory. Acapamy or Music.—-Mixs Julia Marlowe gave Miss THE POTOMAC FLATS. ‘The Proviso That Was Inserted in the River and Harber Bill. The river and harbor bill, which passed the House Monday, contained one item of inter- | est especially to the District. This was the ap- Propriation of $200,000 for continuing the im- | provement of the Potomae river and flate, The appropriation was coupled with a proviso that } Bo part of the sum shall be expended until the now pending involving title to a part of the | land being reclaimed shall have been tried in the court of the first instance, and not then if the decision be adverse to the government, —— AMERICAN STUDENTS. James K. Moulton Arrested for Deliberate! Killing Lydia Ann Newby. A horrible murder was brought to light in Camden, N. J., on Monday morning by the discovery of the body of Lydia Ann Newby, colored, lying on the floor of a room in her home at 6th streetand Kaighn'savenue. The head was crushed in, and evidences of a terri- bie struggle were visible in the room. ; A bloody hatchet was found near the house, and this is undoubtecly the weapon with which the deed was committed. James R. Moulton, also’ colored, with whom the woman had been living, bas been arrested on suspicion of being the wurderer. Police Justice Paul received information in the afternoon, which, if confirmed, shows the act of the murderer to have been one of the most fiendish on record. It is to the effect that Moulton had contracted with parties in Philadel- phia to sell the body of the woman. After makin; all arrangements as to the price to be pai for the corpse, method of delivery &e., the inhuman form is ssid to have deliberstely smashed in the skull of his victim with» hatchet. “the police are running out this clue.
