THE BIGGEST SHOW ON EARTH. Many Thousands Visited the Barnum & Bailey Cireus Last Night. The immense crowd that filled the vast tents Containing the Barnum & Bailey circus last night proved the popularity of that clase of en- tertainment when presented in the most com- Plete and artistic manner. Every grade of society was represented. Foreign min- isters, Senators, Representatives and offi- cials of every grade with Indies of Tecognized position in society and children who are being bronght up in the most luxurious manner. Side by side with these were the gov- ernment clerks and their families, the business man, the mechanic and the laborer, each with his wife and. children, all cither comfortably seated or waiting to be shown their seats, « that they might witness the greatest show on earth. wat 1g before the hour for the opening of the exhibition tent y nd those wh to secure seat The crowd ; the commence ie even of ad- pped and several thou- ment of the perfor: mission tickets was st sand were turned away, althongh many of them begged admission, expresieg their wil- lingness to stand. From the moment one passed the doorkeeper there was a constantly changing scene of we der and interest. In the menagerie tents there were animals of every deserip' many of | them the rarest specimens ever seen in captiv- rved seat had been | DISTRICT GOVERNMENT. DELEGATES APPOINTED. ‘The Commissioners have appointed the fol- | lowing gentlemen delegates from the District of | Columbia to the national Nicaragua canal con- | vention, to be held in the city of St. Louis on | June 2," 1892: Josiah Dent, P. Morgan, | Joseph R. West, Wm. B. Webb, 8. E. Wheat a L. G. Hine, Matthew G. Emery and James Barbour. NO INTENTION OF CHANGING THE ORDER. In acknowledging the receipt of the resolu- tion passed by the W. C. T. U., protesting against the revocation of the Commissioners’ order with reference to pool rooms, the Com- | missioners say they have no intention of with- | drawing their action in the matter. STREETS TO BE RESURFACED. | ‘The Cranford Paving Company has been or- | dered to resurface New Jersey avenue from M street to Florida avenue. | The Barber Asphalt Paving Company bas been ordered to resurface E, F and G streets northwest from North Capitol street to New | Jersey aveniue. BUILDING PERMITS were issued yesterday as follows: C. H. Gladden, one brick dwelling, 116 9th street southeast, .500. W. H. Doherty, twelve brick dwellings, 137 to 155 L street and 1100 to 1102 New Jersey avenue southeast; $10,800. Charles Horner, oue frame dwelling) on Mayer's road, Brightwood; $2,500. James Dubbyn, one brick dwelling, 7 6th street northeast; $3,000. ‘T. A. Harding and C. 8. Baker, four brick dwellings, 1707 to 1713 P street northwest: ity. There was a splendid group of lions, ,, majestic, powerful, the rovalty | of the a kingdom. “Then: there was a grizzly bear. heavy, sleepy looking, but with a | Wicked eve betraying bi< vieions disposition. | “It is believed,” said Mr. Frank Perly, who was explaining the characteristics of the different | animals to a Stan reporter, “that if there should be a contest between this grizzly and our biggest lion the bear would get the best of it, for he would stand upon his hind legs and ward off a blow with his fore paws until he could get an oppor- tunity to get a grip, and then he would hug the life out of the lion. The latter, you know, doesn’t seem to have any knowledge of de- fense; he just simply attacks by brute force. ‘The bear is a pugilist and will box with his ad- Yerary until he gets a chance for # body blow | or a clinch.” Then there were the splendid herds of ele-| ants, dromedaries, camels, ponies, the bai horse, the sacred cows, animals of every description, scores of monkeys, a male ostrich and a long array too numerous to mention, but each of which attracted attention and w: eagerly inspected by the crowd. - IN THE EXHIBITION TENT. Within the mammoth exhibition tent the scene was a unique one. The seats were filled | with people, hile many of those who had simply bought admission tickets were wander- | ing aimlessly around in the vain effort to find a | resting place. ‘The opening pageant brought before the audience all the resources of the arena and gave an indication of the immen- sity of the display. ‘Then came the ring per-| formances in three rings and two stages, int ducing the very cream of the circus profession. | Besatiful horses, highly trained ponies, per- | forming cats. sheep and mules, and elephants, | from the dwarf Tom Thumb to the monster | Mandarin, all contributed to the pleasure of the erowd, and cach act was loudly ap-| planded. The graceful acrobatic feats by | the most accomplished gymnasts thrilled the | audience, although so eas; and confident were | the performers that the real danger of their work did not seem to be apparent. The riding | was excellent, particularly the acts of Miss Mar- t Doria, Wm. O'Dule and P. W. Harlow. Taces "were of intense interest and titly closed the regular ring performance. THE SPECTACULAR EXHIBITION. Imre Kiraly's spectacle of Columbus or the Discovery of America revealed what it is pos sible to do in the way of gorgeous effect when | no limit is put upon the expense. The scenic | arrangements, the magnificent costumes, the | large ballet, the great choruses, the royal’ pro- | cessions, all revealed an ingenuity in construe- | tion, a careful attention to detail and | a knowledge of ensemble that was| @ revelation to the audience: _ but| everything was represented @ fidelity to| detail and effect that was wonderful, and when | the long procession filed out of the ‘arena a: the audience realized that the entire entertain- ment was coneluied there was but one express- ion, viz: That this was “the biggest show on earth.” PERFECT DISCIPLINE. ‘There was one thing that struck the thinking | tan last night, and that was the perfect dise pline that pervaded every department of great aggregation. Each set of employes have their own particular duties to perform and do | not interfere with those of any other set. Each act in the ring moves like clockwork, and there is no confusion, no matter how many there may be performing at once. | The head of each department is held respon- sible for thove under him, whether he be in ¢harge of « wagon train or of the whole arenic display. All these subordinates feel their re- sponsibility to one head—Mr. J. A. Bailey. It is his marvelous executive power that has so perfcetly organized the great army of people Under him. Modest and unassuming, but ever Vigilant and thoughtful, he at the en- trance and nothing escapes his notice. All difi- eulties are referred to him and his decision is Prompt and irrevocable. The public are now Willing to accept the fact, that was an open secret before, that for the past ten years, even during the latter part of the life of Mr. Bar- mum, Mr. Eailey was the moving spirit, the energetic promoter and the active manager of the “great cus that was known as Barnum’s. While the great showman was alive he received the credit of furnishing the public the amusement which | they craved. Now that Mr. Barnum is dead | and the show that was called his still continues, not only with its luster undimmed, but with an increase of beauty and far greater in extent, tae honor and credit of the work must be given to Mr. Bailey. The tent this afternoon was again crowded and it is anticipated that the last Performance tonight will test the capacity of | canvas. Barnum & Bailey's show comes Dut once # year and everybody wants to see it. > ‘New ALExasputa.—Watch for announcements. —Adet. > Confirmations, ‘The Senate, in exec i | firmed the following nominations: Richard | Lambert of California, U.S. consul at Mazat- lan; Nathan 0. All the bids mentioned are in excess of the appraised value of the vessels., ——aeae ‘The Nomination of Mr. Coolidge. It is extremely probable that when the Sen- te next goes into executive session there will be one discussion on the nomination of T. Jef- | ferson Coolidge of Boston, who has been named as minister to France. The opposition is said to have originated with Senators Stewart, Teller and Morgan, and the point is made that it would be diplomatically improper 0 send a monometalist to represent the United States in a bi-metallic country. Mr. Coolidge was a delegate to the pan-Ameri- ean conference and in financial debate in the sessions of that body put himself on record on the gold side of finance. There are but few members of the Senate who are really interested | the nomination. Democrats are | rather inclined to be fractious because Mr. Coolidge left the democratic party such a! short time ago; republicans do not like the | nomination very much because they claim Mr. Coolidge has not been a republican long enough to give him any well-founded claim to such an important appointment. There is, however, no question but that Mr. Coolidge will be con- firmed. SSiSsee se S ‘Mr. Appersen’s New Departure. Mr. George H. Apperson, who for some years was connected with the Washington bureau of the St. Louis Globe- Democrat, and who has re- cently been.a toiler here for the Chicago Her- aid, expects to leave the city on Thursday for St. Louis. ‘On Monday next he will formally take charge of the St. Louis Star Sayings, the afternoon republican daily of the village on the Missis- sippi. Ahost of the newspaper men in this city are sorry he is going, but as he will be managing editor of a paper in which he has large financial interest, no one is wasting any tearful sympathy over him. “We cre going to do several things of impor- tance in Missouri this fall.” said Mr. Apperson to a Stax reporter this afternoon, “but the most important of these happenings will be the elec- tion of Maj. Warner as governor. It is going to be done sure enough.” An Alleged Libel Suit. Secretary Noble is in St. Louis and expects to return the latter part of the week. In his ab- sence there is no one that can speak positively as to the truth of the published statement that while in New York recently at- tending the Grant monument ceremonies he was served with a notice of a libel suit brought against him by W. A. Lapham, who was form- erly chief of the stationery ‘division, It is thought at the department that if such action was taken, as it is a private affair, there would be no official record made of it. is based on a cir- It is believed that the March 25, its proposed bidders for stationery supplies for the department cautioning them aguinst any interference on the part of Mr. Lapham. Dealing on Margins Not Gambling. Judge Mitchell in Philadelphia yesterday de- clared it as the judgment of the Supreme Court that a plaintiff speculating on “margins” was entitled to recover his original deposit and de- clared that buying on margins was not necessar- ily gambling. Thus, he said, one might buy money from A and borrow from B the money to pay for it, pledging the stock as security for the stock. Hence he might borrow from hia broker, or in other words the broker might carry the stock for him on @ margin. If delivery was not part of the purchase then the transaction was a mere waiver in the rise nd fail of prices, but if there was in good faith a purchase. delivery might be post made to depend upon a future condition and the stock carried on margins or otherwise in the meanwhile without affecting the legality of the transaction, Killed by a Trolley Car. An eight-year-old son of Eli Martin was killed in Lancaster last evening by an electric car. In attempting to cross the track in front of the car he was knocked down and dragged some distance.
