THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON ALEXANDRIA. CITY SCHOOL BOARD MEETING. ‘The city school board met last night at the Peabody ‘building, President Smith in the chair and ten members present. Much of tho time of the board was occupied with detaile as to the repairs and et of ones. Serer ~ was agreed that the names “ ington School’ and “] ‘School’ building” should ‘be Pisced in block letters, on, the fronts of | the ‘ashington street and the King street school Plane for drainage, dc. at tho col- od buildings on Pitt street and on Alfred street were considered and it was ordered that’ application be made to the city council for the abatement of the nuisance esisting in the alley in the rearof ‘the Lee building on Alfred street near Princess po as to get rid of the stagnant water there. An order was made for a contract with Wellington ‘Thomas for the repair of the out houses of the Beaton School building on Pitt street. Bills ef Thomas Hoy for stove work, Alexandria Gasetie for advertising and Samuel Burke for desks were ordered to be paid. It was ordered ‘that a new permit be granted to Fred Hawes, ‘who bad been dropped from the rolls. It was announced that the annual estimates, would be ready by jay meeting and the boar Journed. SCHOOL EXHIBITS FOR THE FAIR. ‘The Alexandria city schools are now, under the direction of the superintendent of schools, muaking preparations for an exhibition of work @t the Bedford Summer School and at the world’s fair in Chicago. The exhibits of edu- cational progress in each school is made up b; ‘the teacher and sentin to the principal, whoc' the exhibiteand sends the best to the city super- intendent of schools, who makes selections of ‘the most available and sends them to the state Doard of education at Richmond. These ex- Bibits will then make part of the public school exposition that is to take place at Bedford City, ‘Va. during next summer. From these exhibits a selection will be made of Virginia's contribu- tioa to the world’s fair at Chicago. Alexan- @ria will have a fair share at the fair, and the schools are now busy with preparations. ALBXANDRIA'S OUTLOOK AT HUNTING CREEK. ‘The Alexandria brick works of Messrs. Park Aguewani M. B. Harlow, in Fairfax county, on Washington street extended to Hunting creek, are now again in tion. The chan- nel of Huntiag creek has been dredged, so that scow losds of brick can be gotten from the Washington street wharves in Alexandria and carried to Washington city. The creck fisheries are also busy, and the Patrick street en- trance to Alexandria via Hunting Creek bridge as seldom without the passing of vehicles—con- necting country town. When the new bridge of the proposed electric railway is ox- Yended from tho south end of Royal street to ew Alexandria on the south side of Hunting creck the souta side of Alexandria will show » more business-like aspect than it has exhibited since the rope walk was removed from Jones’ Point. Should the Richmond and Danvilie railroad utilize ites long-constructed woadbed in that section the south edge of Alox- ‘andria would have s boom fully equal to that of the northwest section. An extension of the corporation line to its old limit on Hunting creek would be a public benefit to the dwellers ©n both sides the present unnatural line. POLITICAL MATTERS. ‘The republicans have bad a glut of meetings reference to their coming state convention. democratic organization works more slowly and its meetings will all be held under the committee. and the prmaries con- Gastel ender the regular party ruice. No date ‘Of these primaries hus yet been announced. NOTES The Strider dwelling and lot on Gibbon Street near Fairfax has heen sold for $650. Whe Hewes dwelling and lot on Wilkes street Between Lee and Fairfax streets has been sold $750. These sales do not indicate a boom first ward real estate. ‘A $2 dividend per share for six months has been declared by the Alexandria Perpetual ‘Association. ‘The remains of Miss Gertrude E. Mason of Georgetown were brought here today for Berial tn the family lot ; ‘Mayor Strauss has as visitors his charming ter, Mrs. Phil Leterman of Charlottes- ‘Wille, and his three grandchildren, with the ac- com: Miss Halls Leterman. ‘Mr. Geo. E. Markell has recovered from his -Uate illness. — WANTED---HELP. WANTED—SITUATIONS.
