2 TO BUILD 4 HANDSOME CHURCH. How Mrs. Edward Temple Will Honor the ‘Memory of Her Father and Her Husband. Fourteenth street is to bave « handsome new eburch structure. The Unity Presbyterian Church fs the fortunate organization and the new building comes as a most agreeable sur- prise to the congregation. No announcement has yet been made to the members of the ehureh. It comes about in this way: Mra. Ed- ward Temple, wishing to erect s suitable me- morial to her father, the late Dr. Gunton, and to her husband, Mr. Temple, whoreceatly died, will erect « handsome stone edifice for Unity Church. The building is to cost €75,000 and to be constructed of Maryland marble, the same as that used in the Bank of Washington building. It is to be known as the Gunton-Temple Memorial Church. Mrs. Temple purposes not only to build the church, but intends to furnish it throughout, equipping it read; for service. Messrs. Hornblower & al the architects, have already been commissio to make plans, and the work of erection will be stonce. The structure is to be the main auditorium is to have a seating ty of 800. The Unity Church owns, free of incumbrance, the fine building site on which the mt modest building stands. This or ire Will be torn down to make room for the new one, m had in view the erection of « new rch edifice and was considering the ways means. Mrs. Temple's munificence, ho . bas solved the problem for them in s delightful way. Mrs. Temple is © mem- of the First Presbyterian Church, but isa friend of the pastor of Unity, Rev. Geo. h, and bas taken a deep interest in the tion over which he presides Ja car- rying out her plans she build not only a bandsome monument to her fether poe busband, but contribute largely to the ad- Yancement of the Presbyterian church, to which she is devoted. ERAS An ALEXANDRIA. il Mi 4 EXTENSIVE FIRE AT DATLIONT. The extensive livery stablesof Mr. Jamos Patterson, on Washington street near King street, were destroyed by fire about 4 o'clock this morning. It was 3:40 a.m. when Everett Roberts, the watchman at the stable, who slept fm the office room near the front door, dis- eovered sparks dropping from the loft. He up and just at the same mo- ment Mir. Patterson, whove dwelling adjoins the stable, discovered the flames rising near bis window, which overiooked the stable roof, and as Roberts ck the door Patterson was on his ‘way down stairs. Both men hurried to the berses. There were forty-eight of them and ‘the stable was all alight with the flaming prov- ender above, while sparks rained through the crevices of the second floor. A ready knife eut cach horse loose as the ‘and his assistant burried through ‘the stable and in s short time forty-six of the forty-eignt horses had been freed, and every one of them, contrary to the common way of ran out of the stable away from the fire into Washington street or the back alley which Ieads to St Asaph street. In the minute that it took to cut loose the horses the fire had sped, roaring like acyclone. Two horses only remained in the stable, a fine steed of Mr. W. D. Ramsay and a horse of the Messrs. Weld. 4s Mr. Patterson was reaching Mr. Ramsay's horse s burning beam fell between him and the animal and the flame and smoke drove him back. ‘The firemen reached the ground when the flames were crackling above the roofs, and as the crowds increased, the scores of carriages were drawn out and parked on the street near by, while the horses were corralled near Stabler's drug store: and before the united deluge of the Columbia and Hydraulon engines the flames began to die out. The firemen cleared away the fire, but the smoke defied them, ze they pushed on and brought out at first Mr. Wild's horse in a bad condition, and then Mr. Ramsay's horse alive and kicking. In less than an hour the flames had been driven out, but the firemen continued their labors until after daylight Mr. Patterson, who is the principal owner of the Gentleman's Driving Park near this city, sent many of his horses and vehicles there. Others were provided for in the stables of ‘Messra. Windsor, Daingerfield, Wheatley, Simp- fon and others. The only horse seriously in- fured is that of Mr. Wild, which was beyond WANTED---HELP. Mr. Van Auken's buggy was brought out in flames. Dr. Bedford Brown's carriage was injured, as were other Yebicles, but so extensive a contiagration in the midst of a crowded neighborhood has seldom resulted im so little loss. Mr. itterson will Jose about £4,000, his insurance being barely sufficient to cover the feed lost. He will, how- ever, rebabilitate himself as speedily as ble and push on his busi- ness His stable was a very pop- ular one with horse owners, and many of the private teams of the, city were kept there, ‘The stable was over 100 feet long and about 30 Wide. and there were also several auxiliary stables and carriage houses. No such fire has occurred here in stables since the burning of Wise's City Hotel stables m 1837, when the devouring clement had » feed that is vividly emembered by the old citizens. BOARD OF TRADE MEETING. The Alexandria board of trade held ite an- nual meeting st Paff's Hail last night. Presi- dent Reed made his annual statement of the work of the directors during the year, and at the ennual election President Reed, Secretary Reardon, Treasurer Burke and ali the other Officers were re-elected, the secretary casting a umunimous vote for them. ‘The treasurer reported eighty-five members whose contributions reached $445. That sum did not suffice to pay for the work done by the Doard, as the deficit of year would be over $100. Messrs. and Agnew having ex- amined the treasurer's accounts de- clared them correct. The treasurer's was accepted. ‘The president urged o general effort to increase the membership of ‘the board and mission work in that line was ordered. Mr. John G. Beckham called the attention of the board to the importance of the Proposed international Columbian naval re- ‘iew at Hampton Roads to this section of the country. The assemblage of so many war vessels there would certainly insure ‘the coming of some of them to Washington and would give the people here some sight, if not ipation, of the great movements which celebrated’ the four hundredth anni- ve of the discovery of America by Columbus. A resolution in favor of an appropriation of $250,000 by Congress in of this review was adopted, and ‘efter some suggestions by Hon. Park Agnew, the result of his recent visit to Florida, and by President Reed, the result of his recent visit to Chicago, of methods in use to improve the business of southern and of western towns ‘an order was made granting the use of the hall for the ladies meeting in refereuce to a fair for the Alexandria Light Infantry. The subject of extending a welcome to the Farmers’ Institute, ‘whieh will meet here on the 13th instant, was then considered. Messrs. Beckham, May and King were appoiated to tender the good wishes of the board to the Farmers’ institute and the board adjourned. THE ALEXANDRIA CoUNTY couRT. The county court, Judge Chichester, has loved its April term. On the criminal side of ‘the court an indictment was returned against Albert Lyles for housebreaxing, and C. 8. Scoft guilty of burning a barn arid was sent to for one year. On the probate side final ‘Secounts of the Burke and Swann estates and of Corbett, guardian, were filed, and Miranda Presior quslifed ac sdminisiratna of A Nora. ‘The county court has adjourned without any action in reference to gaming at Jackson City. Asis understood that the matter will be left alone until the test cases in Richmond are decided. The corporation court will open next Mon- day, and at that term all the liquor license dons are usually considered. fudge Chichester bas sppointed Hezekiah Dorsey a epecial mano} ington dustrict of ent eomenceosee George Mr. H. eg a well-known = boat engineer, ir.
