r . THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, MEN AND WOMEN AND SPIRITS. How the Anniversary of the Fox Rappings WW ANTED—CooKs. #10 TO Was Celebrated. 4 GATHERING AT BUILDERS’ EXCHANGE HALL LAST SIGHT—MIRTH AND MUSIC AND DANCIXO— SOME OF THE SPIRITs SAID To BE PRESENT DESCRIBED TO TRE AUDIENCE. There were no ghosts visible to the general public at the celebration in this city last night by the First Society of Spiritualists of the forty-foarth anniversary of the advent of modern spiritualist. The Builders’ Exchange fall was the scene of the festivities, and be- sides the 600 or 700 mortals who were present and filled every seat in the hall one of the speakers reported that there were hundreds ef spirit forms visible to her. It was altogether a merry occasion. To those whoare not spiritualists the idea of being surroanded by conscious en- tities in the form of departed spirits, entities shat ‘with proper encouragement and help tips OF rap out # message, or even clothe themselves in tenuous ghost-like garbs in the dusky light of @ seance room, would be any- thing but conducive to cheerfulness. But the company last night gave no evidence of any dep: of feeling on account of the invisi- Die shades announced to be present and taking part im their merrymaking. In fact, this con- dition of affairs seemed to give the utmost satisfaction. It was that belief to have of the continuance of existence across the border line of death that constitutes what assert to be the great and cheering feature of their religion. So they listened with pleasure to the fine musie that was provided for the occasion and they or many of them joined blithely in the dance that followed the musical and literary CONGRATULATIONS. Mr. Milan C. Edson, president of the society, Acted as master of ceremonies and introduced those who took part in the exercises. He made, too, » brief congratulatory address, speaking of the progress that has been made in spiritualism since the “rappings” in Hydesville forty- four years ago as evidenced by the number there gathered for one thing, the belief at the forty-fifth anniversary mambers would be increased so much that no one would regard spiritualism as not a respect- able rel Mr. Edson read a message of m from Mra. A. M. Glading, a medium who was several years in Washington, and e greeting purporting to come from Mrs @tading’s “spirit control. Mrs. Jennie Hagan Jackson delivered an ad- dress filled with poetic references to the beau- spiritualism and incidentally referring fact that the modern revelation, as it s tf was called, was made to little children, the Fox sisters. She remarked that it wus absurd to think that these little children, one two years old g2d the other between three and four, could we engaged in chicanery or that “yy were skilled prestidigitateurs. Mrs, Jackson concinded by declaiming a oem which a lady on the stage announced was pirational. The poem relisted to the “rap- ings” at Hydesville, and pictured St. eter leaving the gates of heaven ajar so that a band of angels escaped and sped down to earth and then finally as More escaped taking the gates off their hinges altogether and leaving {ree communication, at least so far as celestial beings are concerned, between heaven and earth. Mr. H. Altemuns sang two solos. Mrs. Hort gavea recitation, Master Julius Burnham, a Iittle boy so small that when he spread bis music before bim he was almost completely concealed from the andience, piayed a violin solo, Mra. Phillips sang aa orchestra played several selections. None of these performances had any special reference to spiritualism. DESCRIBING THE SPIRITS PRESENT. ‘The spiritual part of the performance came when Miss Maggie Gaule took the platform. Miss Gaule, it is claimed, bas a special gift of mediumship by which the veil that hides from the eyes of the ordinary mortals the spirits hovering about us are visible to her. Miss Gaule is large, « brunette with an at- tractive manner and face, and docs not give evidence in her appearance of the nervous or- ganization usually accredited to those supposed. to be fitted for mediumship. The visible presence of ghostly companies apparently has not caused her loss of physical health. She began with a Lrief introductory address, in which she said the ball was thronged with hundreds of forms from the angel world, who were rejoicing with the mortals present on this annivers Then she passed from generals and particu- larsand described individual forms she saw and words they spoke in spirit voices, or wrote in letters of tlowere. As she went on she descended from the plat- form and walked alone the aisles describing the forms that she said she saw gathered about mortals there and announcing the messages they gave. Here she described the spirit of a mac's wife, there a little child that reached out its bands to some man or woman now an elderly shade that held its hands over couple in benediction. She gave names and messages, described dresses, in one or two cases spoke of the cause of death, such as a “choking in the throat,” and in most every case the person in the audience for =a the Message was intended by nodding the head. or by word. claimed to identify the particular spirit described. Muss Gaule s exhibition created cousiderable inter- est and no one appeared tobe disturbed by the announcements she made regarding the spirits about him. REY. MR. HICKS OX THE PLATFORM. ‘Mrs. Wallace of New York made a brief ad- Gress, and then W. W. Hicks, formerly pastor of the Church of the Tabernacle, who was in the audience, was called to the platform. Mr. Hicks described spiritualism as a great revelation. It taught man, as the lights set around » Mobammeuan cemetery, that there is no death. = It was, as he said, a fuller Christianity. It had obliterated the graveyards and set the torch of knowledge ablaze. He spoke of those who had early taken up the cause of spiritual- ism as martyrs and declared that if Jesus of ‘Nazareth died to make men holy these died to make men free. At the close of the exercises the floor was cleared for dancing and a program of ten num- bers was carried out under the direction of » floor committee composed of Messrs. Lindley, Wall, Ripley aud Seribner. —————_—— Death of Dominic McMenamin, Mr. Dominic McMenamin, the well-known warble worker, located on Pennsylvania ave- nue near 2d street northwest, died at his resi- dence at 4:40 o'clock yesterday afternoon, after month's illness. Mr. McMenamin was a na- tive of Ireland, butcame here when a mere youth and learned the marble-cutting business this city, working for a number of years on the Capitol extension. Here his tastes led him to the finer work, and by the time he had completed his apprentice- ship he was regarded as one of the best marble carvers of this section. He e: tablished himself in business on Pennsyivania avenue, A street and Ist street east (now Within the library site) in 1859, and from avery small beginning he built up a large business, most of it artistic work for dwellings and ceme- Yeries. He was located here till 187, when in consequence of the condemuatiou of his prop- ‘erty for the library site he removed to Penu- sylvania avenue near Ist street northwest. Mr. Menamin leaves a widow and a large family of children, most of them grown, and many friends will sympathize with them in the loss of devoted husband and kind father and his fellow craftemen will miss an upright and con- scientious associate. — Pension Office Contributions. ‘The ewployes of the pension office bave con- tributed @595.40 to the Ked Cross fund for the relief of the sufferers from the Russian famine, and this sum has been deposited with Riggs & Co. This is the largest amount con- feibuted by any of the government depart- ments, and the pension office people feel a Great satisfaction in the result. - —— ‘The Rustic Festival.
