A Slight Increase in the Number of Deaths} Manoaner Matnrn—Aftet an absence of several years Margazet Mather makes her ap- pearance at Albaugh’s Grand Opera House Last Week. “There was a slight increase in the number of deaths during last week over that of the previous week,” says the report of Health Officer Hammett. “Still, the returns show a good con- dition of health throughout the city. Malarial diseases are below the normal, there having been but one fatal case of typhoid fever. Con- tagious diseases no longer, for the present at least, excite anxiety. The fearfully stormy weather during the month has caused a large amount of suffering from lung diseases, and the death rate from the acute forms thereof continues high. Over thirty deaths from these causes occurred through the week, twenty of which were from pneumonia. The mortality from kidney diseases, owing perhaps to vome oceult connection with the same influences that characterize the epidemic influenza, main- tains its high rate, seven fatal cases therefrom having been reported. “The invasion from typhus or ship fever, which at one time threatened to break over the limits to which it was confined at New York city and spread throughout the country, has been successfully repressed through the acien- tific skili and energetic action of the medical men of that city. Perhaps in nosingle instance of Inte has the inestimable value of a health de- partment to acommunity been so clearly dem- Onstrated as in this cuse.” The report shows: Number of deaths, 116— white, 57; colored, 59.
