ACrowd at the Majestic’s Pier to See Bor- rowe and Drayton La: New York, March 24.—Apparently the end is not yet in the Borrowe-Drayton scandal. The failure of Mr. Drayton to keep his appoint- ment last night at the Windsor Hotel, when he saic he would make a statement of his side of the case, together with his complete dis- appearance from his usua’ places of resort, was the subject of nolittle comment this morn- ing among the people who as carly as 5:30 o'clock began to gather on t ite Star dock awaiting the arrival of the steamship Majestic, which bad anchored out in the stream last night owing to the fog. ft was said that during tho early part of the evening. while the Majestic was tied up in the fog bank, » number of passengers, among them Borrowe and Milbank, gathered in the saloon and began to tell stories and sing songs to pass away the time. Finally some one sang a song about a man who fell in love with the wife of another man, and this was followed by 2 song which recited a duel which never came off. The result of this was that Borrowe and Milbank left the party in a frame of mind not exactly peaceful. At about 8 o'clock this morning a dark- complexioned young man with black hair and just a suspicion of regulation Englieh side whiskers appeared at the head of the aang way accompanied by a somewhat heavy it companion. There was a murmur of “There he is’ and every eye in the crowd on the pier was turned toward the two men, the smaller of whom was Hallett Alsop Borrowe and his companion Milbank. Milbank walked wit light ae said was caused by rheumatism. The directly to the baggage which was piled on the pier. Assoon as Mr. Borrowe's baggage was examined he, in company with Mr. Milbank and an elderly gentleman, took a back and drove rapidly away from the dock. ——— VIRGINIA DEMOCRATS. | which he two went The State Convention Called to Meet in Rich- mond on May 19. MB. WILLIAMS OF ILLINOIS. Mr. Williams (IIL) contended that in order tohave a fair and equal dollar the amount of currency should increase as the demand for it increased. Mncn had been said recently about a dishonest dollar. If we had such a dollar it was made so by legislation and maintained as such by the republican party, While he did not believe ina 70-cent dollar, neither did he believe in a 149-cent dollar. The former was as honest a dollar as the latter. (Applame,) He believed in» hndred-cent ollar. The power to declare what whould be the unit of value was vested in Congress, and Congress had no more important duty to perform than to fix and maintam a unitof value that was fair to the creditor and the debtor alike—a unit of ralue by which every picce of property and every day's labor could be measured. This bill did not provide for inflation; it provided for a reasonable increase of currency. SOME STATEMENTS CONTROVERTED. Mr. Williams then proceeded to contro- vert the argument that the passage of the bill would have the effect of dumping into the United States all the silver of Emope. It was said that this legislation would drive the gold dollar out of the country. He recognized that sad prediction as one which had been made by the same gentlemen in 1378, It bad then Deen said that silver coin was so obnoxious to its yellow brother that it would drive him out of the country. In spite of this prediction the United States “had t over $600,009,000 of gold. Gold would not be driven cut. ‘The gentleman from Massachusetts (Mr. Lodge) had’ said that if we wished to force Europe to double standard we must stop coining silv. ‘They would be forced to the double standard only after England had taken from the United Statez, with the secuslties she held against it, every doilar of American gold. “Free ecinage would not drive | gold oat of tae country.
