The foilowing extract from a letter from one of the field agents of the United States tish commission shows most graphically the difficul- ties often encountered in carrying ou the in- vestigations of that bureau and the zeal and energy with which the work is prosecuted: I will let you know that I still live and am making good progress, with all this abominable wenther. This week I have been going up and down the river as could catch the steamers. T have a good canvass of the river from head of fishing, some thirty miles below Frederick burg, to Sharp's wharf, about half of the river. Mach of the way it is lined with drift, stake and pound nets in the fishing season, aud the oyster business is no small matter. On Tuesday noon Tarrived at Bowlers wharf, which is a country place, with « pier 1,100 feet long. The wind was blowing a living gale and was as ‘cold as Greenland.” I finisued at that point and had hard work to walk the pier again and not be blown off. Acolored man, with bis wheelbar- row, was blown inte the river. The man sank | twice, vetore the light-house boat reached and | rescued him. He was taken on the wharf un- conscious, and rolled on a barrel to unload the | Cargo of Water, and brought to. His first words were: “if | had been drownded I would er gone straight to heii. 1am gwine to bea better man and jine the church.’ “At 4 p.m., with a drummer for company, I again walked the long pier to take steamer for sharp’s whurf, some five miles below on the opposite side of the river, which is three miles j wide at that point. The steamer was blown aground some fifty feet from the wharf. I | waited on the pier an hour, almost frozen; then j # boat wus sent and I suid down s rope into the yawl and was taken on board. Here t was com- fortable and had supper; but we did not get off | until the tide floated us at 11 p.m. hen we | | were continually blown off, and, after parting | lone bawser at midnight, we made the innding | | from which we started nayawl Atlam. we arrived at Sharp's wharf. ilere we were blown off three times, and about 2 a.m. I found my- | seif on another long pier in » howting gale and zero weather. I made fora house and soon found a bed and was fast asleep. I mention this at some leugth to let you know the weather we have had for the past week. ‘Ihe river is fall of ice, thick enough near shore to be used in stocking ice houses. i “Keturned to Tappahannock this noon and atonce hunted up the leading fishermen and had them meet me at my room. I am now through dere and leave tomorrow for Carter's creek, which will be my next base, working the lower river from there. “Lexpect to meet or hear from —-—— at that point. Have not heard trot him since 1 jeft Lim at the mouth of the river a week ago. Jol. MeDonaid worked this district on cen- sus work in 18+0. I often hear of him. He had some sough experience as regards weather at the same point—Bowler's wharf—and prob- ably has not forgotten it. —— TRAGEDY AT STANDING ROCK. | | | | One Indian Shoots Another and Then Sul- cides—Cause, Jealousy. The details of atragedy at the Standing Rock agency in North Dakota have been received at the Indian office, which tend to show that the Indian is getting to be rather jealous of his | honor asa busband. The injured busband in this case was named Patrick Wounded and his victim was Barney Redstone. Both men were Indians and were employed at the agency. Wounded shot and killed Redstone and then committed suicide, both men dying almost in- stantly after receiving the injuries. The men were of industrious habits, of peaceable dispo- sition, and the tragedy was entirely unex- pected by those living at the agency. But it seems that Wounded wasa married man and bad become extremely jealous of Redstone, who happened to be a distant relative of bis wife. BELIEVED HIS WIFE CARED FOR REDSTOXE. However, Wounded believed that his wife cared more for Redstone than she did for him, and on the night of the tragedy he secured a Winchester and hid in the storm shed of a neighbor's house where Redstone boarded. As Redstone passed out Wounded fired at him, | the bullet passing through his victim's cap without injuring him. As was afterward dis- covered the ball continued its flight for 107 yardsand, passing through the end of the agency barn, found a permanent lodging place in the heart of a stallion belonging to the agency. ‘The animal was found dead in his stall the next morning. Redstone felt the ball as it grazed his scalp, and without waiting to see where it came from he concluded that there might be more bullets where that one came from and so started for a place of safety. He ran around the building and Wounded pursued him and soon overtook him, shooting him down from behind, the bullet passing through the brain. Redstone fell forward on his face snd Wounded shot him again between the shoulders, the bul- let passing through and breaking the spinal cord. Death must have ensued instantly. BLEW THE TOP OF 118 OWN HEAD OFF. Wounded then returned to a neighbor’ house, where his wife wae, and, standing with h back against the door, placed the muzzle of the rifle in his mouth and blew the top of his head off. It did not exceed five minutes from the time he fired the first shot until he shot himself. The agent in reporting the affair adds: “The Indians of the agency regard the affair with complacency and indifference, except in the case of a few. who attach some blame to the woman for being #0 indiscreet as to cause her husband, who was devotedly attached to her, to become so jealous and insane as to put an end to his own life and that of hisinnocent victim.” — —-o— “Samuel of Posen's” Trial Begun. ‘The trialof Maurice R. The house of representatives also met at 1 p.m. Only ten members were present, nine republicans and one democrat. Many of the democratic represcntatives were present in the capital, but did not enter the hall, follow- ing ont the course of reasoning they pursued yesterday. They did not recognize that the louse met at 1 p.m. They themselves ad- journed till 2 o'clock. “In calling the house to order Speaker Paige used the words “The legally constituted Louse of the state of Connec- ticut wili come to order.” After the roll call he adjourned the house until today at 9am. ‘The republicans immediately went into caucus During the intermission between the adjourn- ment of Speaker Paige's house and the meeting of the minority house the journal of Tuesday minority proceedings was distributed by Mr. Walker. Overman of the army engincering corps as it opened yesterday morning at Cleve- land. According to long-established prece- dent the court-martials always open at 10 o'clock and close at 3, but by the late arrival of two members it was 11 o'clock before proceedings commenced. Maj. Overman, pale and haggard, was about the hotel during the forenoon with a group of Cleveland friends at his side. The members of the court, in full dress uni- form, took their seate at i1 o'clock. Col Crofton sat at the center of the court table, Col. Poe on his right and Col. Overshine on his left, the ten other members scattered along on either side. Maj. Overman came in with his attorney, Jndge W. B. Sanders of Cleve- land, and Capt. Savage and Maj. Gardiner of New York. The judge advocate called the roll of the court and then read the special order of the War Department for the convening of the court. It was then discovered that the sten- ogrupher hud not, arrived and @ recess was taken until 1 o'clock. In the afternoon the court began business in earnest. After its members had been sworn Maj. Overman was arraigned and the specifica tions were read to him. They wére very jong and charged him with appropriating to his own use on various occasionscertain sume of mone; The first charge summed up was for embezzl ment aud violation of the articles of war. ‘The second charge also contained several specifica- tions and accused the major of making false Youchers and certifying them to be just, thus defrauding “the government of different sums of money. In effect he was said to have bought ail sorts of household goods for hiv own use and to have charged them to the governminent as supplies of various sorts, the vouchers sent on being fraudulent in each case, Among other things he is accused | of having placed his private coachman on the | ay roll of the department.
