George Clark and nine men from the missing steam tug Edwin H. Webster of Ne York, for whose safety so much anxiety has been felt, arrived at Vineyard Haven, Mass, last Friday night. They are still quartered on board the three-masted schooner Everett Web- ster of Philadelphia. ‘The schooner was bound for Boston from Philadelphia with a cargo of coal and rescued the ten men when nearly every bope of their being saved had been given up. A violent northerly gale has been blowing since she anchored at Vineyard Haven, making | it toe rough for the rescued men to make a landing and it was not until yesterday that the | schooner could be boarded and fali particulars j of the rescue ascertained. Capt. Clark of the | ill-fated tug states: “We left New York Tuesday morning about i o'clock for the dumping groundé off Rockaway Inlet, about three miles from Coney Island. We had dumping scows, Nos. land 17 in tow. There was an increasing northwest wind blow- ing. At 4:05 the same morning we reached the grounds, and after the two scows had dumped their loads we started to return. ‘The wind at this time had attained the velocity of a gale and the tug was struck by blinding snow squalls, causing her to keep near and under Bank.’ In consequence she got into shoal water, and while endeavoring to get out into deeper water the hawser caught in the pro- peller. “Just as day was breaking the steam tug Nicholas, with two scows in tow, came to our assistance in response to our signals, and when all efforts to get the haweer clear were unavail- ing she endeavored to tow the disabled steam tug and scows to New York, but was unable to do 80 on account of the severe gale and high ve: REPORTS RECEIVED AT TUE INDIAN OFFICE Row THE MAMPTON INSTITUTE—NOW THEY ALE CLASSIFIED—THE GREATER PORTION coxstD- ERED SATISPACTORY—SOME SAMPLE RECORDS. have entered certain Indian schodls since the date of their organization and to give the ree- ord of the students while in the school and bis subsequent carecr. Tn accordance with these resolutions the information was called for and re plic# have been received from several schools. ‘The response from the Hampton Normaland Ag. ricultural Institu(e at Hampton, Va., bave been received at the Indian office and presents in elaborate tables the fsets relating to the In- dian students connected with that institution for the past thirteen years. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES. An interesting portion of the report are the condensed biographical sketches of the pupils covering the period since they left the school. Under the system employed at Hampton infor- mation of this character 1s available, a a regu- lar correspondence is kept up with the students. A novel feature of the report are photographs showing the homes which the returned students have made for themselves in the far west. As Hampton is an institution which is maintained by contributions of those interested in the edu- eation of colored and Indian children, every ¢ffort is made to show fully the resulta which | are being attamed, and so the little sketches of ; the careers of the graduates faithfully portray the lights and shadows of life. Some of tho students do well, others not so well, and then there are those whose records are bad. The record of the returned stadents as kept at Hampton is changed from year to year aud the students are graded according to what they are doing and the influence they exert, according to the classification employed. HOW THEY AME GRADED. ‘Those classed as excellent have either had exceptional advantages and use them faithfully or those who by great earnestness and pluck have won an equally wide and telling influence for good. ‘The good--the great mujority—are those who are deing their best and exerting a decidedly good mfluence, even though it may | not be very wide. They must marry legal be honest, industrious aud temperate and live a life which we can point to as an example for ‘The Webster was then anchored and the steam tug Nicholas proceeded toward New York with her own scows. The Webster with her two scows dragged oceanward, her anchor not being sufficient to hold them. Fifty fathoms of hawser was bent on to the end of her chain, which checked her greatly, she having about 100 fathoms of cable out. “After an hour the hawser holding the Scows, which was entangled in the propell cut or chafed itself clear und the scows drifted rapidly out tosea, They each dropped their anchors, which were apparently oi but little service to them. They could be seen by the Webster all day Tuesday drifting to the north- east, but the next morning noting could be seen of them. ‘The Webster contnued drag- Superior Value. No other plasters have been produced which gain so many testimonials of high value as those continuously accorded to Attcock’s Porous Puasters, and the only motive for these excep- tional commendations lies in the fact of their being a medicinal and pharmaceutical preparation of superior value. Additional proof of the true value of ALLCocK’s Porous PLASTERS, lies in the fact that they are being largely imitated by unscrupulous persons, who seek to deccive the public by offering plasters which they claim to be the “same,” “equal,” “as good,” “better,” “best porous plaster,” etc., while it is in general appearance only that they resemble Attcock’s, All of the so-called porous plasters are imitations of ALLCOCKS castes Avoid dealers who attempt to palm off ‘inferior and worthless plasters that are purchased by them at low rates for the purpose of substitution. The meu were obliged to stand in the ice cold water, working for their lives, endeavoring to keep the pumps clear and in working order In this manner they were all more or less frozen. M. Leeds, and three men. hese meu, by skillful manage- ment, rescued the ten men from the sinking tug one by one, this undertaking cousuming an hour's time. ‘When the last man of the t was rescued the guards of the tug were level with the water and she could not have stayed afloat much longer.”” When landed aboard the schooner all of the rescued men had their bands or feet more or less frozen. Capt. Clark states that too much praise cannot be accorded to Capt. Bowen and the officers and crew of the schooner Everett Webster for their gallant rescue. ‘The schooner herself was a so.id mass of ice nearly to her cross-trees, and was almost un- manageable. ‘ihe captain states that he has no knowledge of missing scow No. 5, but thinks that she would not sink, being large and new, with water-tight compartments running nearly the whole length of her. He manifests anxiety regarding the two men on board, as she was not abundantly supplied with food and fuel. ——0e — ANOTHER FUSS OVEK A FLAG, others to follow und improve upon. ‘The fair are the sick and unfortunate, those who have ad few advantages and from whom no better could have been expected. The poor are those who have uot done as well as they should; have married after the {ndian custom while knowing better; have fallen from weakuess rather than from vice, and sume who are recovering themselves after more serious falls. It was useless: she seemed utterly demoralized, untruibful and dishonest. At her request she was sent as a teacher to Indians: bad to leave there in a few months and came home to continue her immoral course. Her record has been worse has one child living, upon whom she lavishes an intelhgent mother s care and devotion.” A Goop arRL. ‘With no family to insist upon her return she was permitted to go through the whole school course, taught at Hampton a year and then graduated from a normal sehool in Massachu- setts.
