It is not explained whether these saw-dogs have been deserted by tramps who aro eating ill-gotten pie while the wood pile remains undiminished or whether they have been decoyed away by some family that was in need of kindling. The sketch speaks for itself, and like many another stand- ard work of art tells a story that is fall of power and emotion and thrilling with the touen of genius, even though you cannot tell exactly what it is Thio supplementary study should do much for the amateur in art by showing how mucha picture may suggest if you will only take the time to study it. , No man can cultivate an optimistic mind on & pessimistic stomach. ‘I spoke to Miss Billins about matrimony yesterday,” said Willie Wishingtoa. “Indeed? What did she say?” : “She said ‘yes.'” i“ “Lcongratulate you.” “Don’t. What Iawsked her was whethah she thought marriage with me would be a failure.” “It is the old story,” said the pick-pocket who was arrested for being in possession of another man's watch. “What do you mean?” asked the policeman. ‘I got into trouble by having too much time on my hands.” He kissed her, and all of the world seemed aflame And wonderfal visions of brilliancy came; -|The earth seemed revolving by jerks and by jars When, after her box on the ear, ho saw stars. The Johnson boy had an old pistol, and when he met the other boy he made some remark to him, and then said he would shoot him down like a dog. He then proceeded to put his threat into execution, and pointed the pistol so that the ball could not bave gone far from the head of the Fusko boy. Instead of getting frightened and running away Fusko ran toward his assailant and tussled for - sion of the weapon, and while doing so wise tol was exploded and the bullet was sent tween his feet. A citizen blew a police whistle, and when the boys separated the colored boy ran away and escaped. Policeman Flynn beard the report several == way, but when he reached the set shooting Johnson was not to be found. ‘The officers searched for him yeuay | night and yesterday until they finally located him. The boy madea statement in Judge Kimball's court this morning in which he declared that there were no bullets in the pistol. ‘ Judge Kimball! fined him €50 for having the weapon and directed the officer to swear cut a warrant for the boy for assault with intent to kill This was done, and Judge Miller com- mitted him to jail in default of €1,000 bail to await the action of the grand jury. gsi <ee Death of Mr. D. No Information to Be Gained From the ‘The State Department is very discreet as te information in regard to Chile today. The last telegram received from Minister Egan came last Friday, but no intimation of its contents can be obtained. The rather startling romore from Valparaiso call forth neither affirmation nor denial from the officials, and there is up: usual silence about all matters pertaining te the controversy. It is expected that the Presi- dent will send all of the correspondence in the case to Congress ina short time, probably a# toon as he receives an official announcement of the result of the investigation being conducted by the Chilean government into the Baltumore affair. ‘MR. POAN'S LAST CAPLBORAM. Tt is understood that the contents of Mr, Egan's last cablegram, in describing the state of affairs in Chile, did not represent a very pe: cific attitude on the of the government at Valparaiso. While not actually sensational oF alarming it did not give much ground for hoping that the Chileans will be very anxious for a quiet rettiement of the difficulty itis further understood that the report of the minister of crimes has been «ubmitted, and that its nature is euch as to enable the Chileas government to return a polite negation to ow demands for reparation. | This is believed to be the inspiration of Mr. Egan's cablegram. es 2+ — DISTRICT GOVEENMENT, NEW WATER SAINS.
