Assistant Secretary Grant is Acting—The Desk With a Hole in It. ‘The desk of the Secretary of War presented a strange appearance this morning. It had been stripped of all books and papers and the great hole burned through the top several months ago was exposed to view. The desk will be re- paired during the interregnum elapsing be- tween now and the coming of anew cabinet officer. ‘The hole in it has been heretofore cov- ered up by a blotting pad, as Secretary Proctor did not care to lose the use of the desk long enough tohave it patched. It is an unusually handsome piece of furniture, being made of carved rosewood. : Gen.
