DEVECTING THE CRIMINALS, The commonwealth’s attorney of the county visited here a week ago last Sunday and procured the servtces of Williams & McLifresh’s detect- ive agency. Messrs. Robert H. Smith and J. P. Dustin of the agency were sent down to inquire inte the case and secure the culpritsif possible, and they succeeded. After Heflins arrest he implicated Joseph Dye and his family and for that reason Dye Was also placed under arrest. Sunday Detec- fixe Dustin was placed in the cell with Heflin md the latter looked upon him as a prisoner. Heflin’s vague story of the crime impheated Dye and atter the latter the move was made to lynch the trio. They werein the jailat Calverton and fearing the jailer would be overpowered and his prisoners taken, they left the jail ‘Thursday afternoon and drove fifty miles in a wagon, spending the night in the woods.
